    George Alexander Trebek was born on July 22, 1940, in Sudbury, Canada. Sudbury is a large city in Northern Ontario and the mining center of Canada.

    His father was George Edward Trebek. As a child who emigrated from Ukraine, he worked as a chef in a local hotel. His mother was Lucille Marie Lagace, a Franco-Ontarian. Her family was French-Canadian from the province of Ontario with approximately one-eighth British Isles ancestry, including Irish. She was only 19 when she had Alex.

    Alex Trebek has a younger sister named Barbara, who was two years younger.
