SAHEL -Lord of Chaos - Terlene

    CHAPTER ONE:THE ESCAPE .

Sahel lay on his bed wide awake. He was now drenched in sweat and out of breath. He had woke from a terrible dream. Rain was pouring hard outside and lightening flashed in the night sky lighting his room through the open window. Each time he closed his eyes he saw them. Screaming and begging for mercy in whatever tongue they knew. Ruthless like tyrants they struck them with no remorse on their face. The composite bows went in to action as archers livened their tool of trade -the flaming arrows soured in the sky spelling a dooms day for the helpless Napatans. The few remaining battle worn soldiers were surrounded and killed to the last man standing- bodies of both man and beasts laid in piles in the streets. From afar the capital could be seen burning like a pit in hell, their pride the palace was razed to the ground. The once majestic wonder on the southland was now in heaps and ruins telling a tell of death and annilation. The city once full of life as people from all parts of the kingdom and across the waters interacted and traded was now desolate-a ghost town. No soul could be seen on the streets only the sounds of vultures hov-ering in the sky full of smoke . Wild dogs howled as they raced towards the outskirts of the city to ravage on the dead. The smell was that of death. The invader army after massacring thousands and setting the city and palace ablaze marched towards the cit-adel's fortress at the southern end of the city . Inside the fortress the queen and what was left of the royal guards sought refuge and put a last line of defense. Queen Dreya stood on the tallest tower on the fortress and looked out to see what remained of her people, city and kingdom. It was all gone now. She had hoped this day wouldn’t come but it still came after delaying it for a long time. The last of her peace emissaries were beheaded and only their heads came back on an ox-cart .She was a strong woman but now the circumstances she was in overwhelmed her. A tear rolled down her left cheek .

Wish you could be here Harmun, she said with sorrow.

But, am going to protect him to my last breath no harm shall befall him. she said with resolve .

After several months of siege the walls to the fortress walls were breached, a sneak attack at the blanket of the night took the guards by surprise .The enemy broke their lines of defense and stormed the already exhausted and hungry royal guards. A final fight of life and death broke out . Inside the royal private chambers Queen Dreya took off a talisman and gave it to a teenage boy.

It was your father’s Sahel now it is yours, keep it close to your heart always.

Yes, Mother I will . Said Sahel as he tried to hold back from crying.

She kissed him affectionately and hugged him tight . Her breath and touch warm full of affection. It was the last thing he was to forget in his entire life. He knew it was goodbye.

We will always be watching over you Sahel. Your father will be proud when you turn into a great man. Remember all we taught you my Sahel keep them in your heart and observe them to your last breath. You are our legacy, live and rise to be king of men . She said.

Queen Dreya then turned to a middle aged man in his 30`s.

Shakur you have been in my service for more than twenty years ever since you were a child. Today I ask you for a favour not as a Queen but as a friend you have known since your childhood .Will you take Sahel to safety and be his guardian until he is of age to be independent on his own ? She asked.

No, mother...am not leaving you! Said the teenager who now broke into small sobs which intensified with each passing second .

Yes, my Queen I swear to protect him to my last breath by the name of gods and the great Nile. He said .

With that reply the Queen handed him the royal silver Khopesh sword .

Give it to him when he earns the weight and honor to bear it . She said . Boy listen to him as you would to your mother and obey as you would to your father .

With that the Queen turned and walked out of the chamber to where the royal guards were fighting a life and death battle against the invaders .

Sahel looked around the room he was in. It had a small wooden table and chair, a burning oil lamp on a wooden shelf mounted on a wall, a papyrus woven medium bed with linen cloth beddings and a woolen pillow case. All were fine craftsmanship and carpentry .Outside a mighty thunder clapped and a strong desert wind blew into his room through the open window that gave him chills as it blew off the burning oil lamp .The last moments with his mother was still fresh and permanently engraved in his mind .

Come this way young master . Said Shakur. And without any resistance he followed him .They walked towards an ancient engraved wall on their right where Shakur took out a spherical emerald and entered it a hole in the crown of the first founding king whose drawing was engraved on the ancient wall.

Sahel heard a click as the emerald disappeared into the hole and a mechanism activated and the wall divided into two sideways. A dark creepy passage came to sight to which the two walked through Shakur being on the lead while he followed closely behind .They crossed over to the other side where Shakur took the emerald from the other side. The wall then started to close in together and the passage was sealed. Sahel knew then that he wasn’t ever going to see her mother again. She had sacrificed her life to protect him. She had chosen to fight and die for her kingdom. She was a Naphthan to the bone-a true warrior Queen. The passage led to an underground tunnel system that run in mazes. A labyrinth of the great cosmos that leads to the gates of known and unknown in this world and between worlds. An hour passed as they traversed the mazes hitting dead ends several times and had to turn back to the origin what he learnt from Shakur as the Heart. His guardian had tied a string to aid them in finding it quickly and trying other routes.

The tunnels were party submerged in murky waters thick as the waters of the lost swamp of Krismos. Strange species of spiders that Sahel couldn't figure to which family in the universe of webs which he was interested in– in his private chamber he had hundreds of different species of spiders under his care.

They formed thick sticky web that left dark greenish liquid on his clothes. Sahel fought his way against the creepy fist sized spiders .

What in the god`s name are these ugly creatures ? He asked as he shook off some that were climbing clothes.

They are the Gremorian spiders only seen in the passages to another planes. You are versed with that because you had access to the loyal library at your disposal. Yes, I am but that isn’t remotely relevant as to why they have to be so ugly than the butler’s wife Soraminato .

Shakur how did you come to know about this gateway? He asked. I hadn’t read it from any royal maps and books even those ancient Arcadian Scrolls. He added. Not every thing is written for the safety of sanity among the masses .The information handed to the guardians by the watchers is beyond ordinary and this gateway is just an iota of their knowledge given as a gift to humanity upon enlightenment. Your great great grandfather was one of the chosen seven who they bestowed . Don`t ask me any more questions until we get out of this maze am trying to concentrate the path shown to me by your father before even you were born. Do you want to get trapped in here for eternity ? "Asked his guardian.

    No, I don’t . He replied .

That’s good . Said Shakur as he took a U-turn into another tunnel his facial expression looking like that of a person scrutinizing something in the walls.

Sahel followed silently in obedience to his order and soon was lost in his own thoughts. A memory flashed in his mind of how the royal council being cut down as they were fleeing from the palace via the palace underground tunnels that led to the fortress. Their escape route had been compromised, halfway they were ambushed by assassins. His only cousin and friend Munik was shot on his left eye by an arrow. It was such a fatal wound that rendered him unconscious due to huge blood loss in a couple of seconds. They left him out there bleeding to death as the thought of trying to save him would have spelt doom to the remaining survivors. A huge score of them were already suffering from mortal wounds and carrying him along would only do more harm than good as it would slow them down and the remaining survivors would have died in vain. If it were not for the Queen and the commander of the royal guards putting a last line of defense to hold off the assassins as they made escape to safety behind the fortress walls he knew that he wouldn’t be alive by now. It was all in vain you are all dead . YOU’RE ALL DEAD . He murmured as his lips curved in agony and closed his eyes tightly due to a sudden acute pain slashing across his heart.

Another hour had passed as they traversed the maze this time Shakur seemed sure of the paths
