Poems by Sandip Saha
Oh My Dear
It was a wonderful afternoon
I saw you for the first time,
two wide open eyes as if lotus
blossomed in your calm lake of face
I looked on and on unknowingly,
you shied away your eyes from me.
I remember that night you were
dressed like a princess, you came and
greeted me with flowers waving them
around me by your petal soft palms.
Light glittered, music amazed
I got lost in a wonderful world.
You wrote so many sweet letters
addressing me with adorable names
as I had to leave you back to parents
to perform duty, you did it so well!
Now we are together
can hardly leave each other
as we travel to mountain or to sea shore.
May God bless us forever!
Beautiful
When I wanted to love
You turned me down.
I tried hard to please
Alas! I was always neglected.
The more I tried
The more you tested,
At the end, I do not know
Whether I passed or failed.
You always play under veil,
I never get to see your face.
At times I feel so depressed
Finding you so cruel.
What a hide and seek you play,
I feel exhausted to reciprocate.
Oh Beautiful embrace me now.
Drench Me
If you drench me in love
be it like sweet dream,
as a bee has fallen in the honey
cannot raise itself.
While you touch me
let it sparkle lightning
and drive me to the fulfillment
that I otherwise never get.
As you talk to me
let it reverberate as musical tune
which can mesmerize me
forgetting the remaining world.
If you give me shelter
let it be as wide as sky,
as I want to float over it
without the fear of sinking.
Let no bondage restrict me,
no verdict rule over my bliss,
narrowness of humanity may disappear
ushering in the paradise of union.
Cradle Tales of Love
I like to keep you deep in my heart
lest you go out of my sight,
not knowing what is happening to you
I cannot live even for a while.
I am so eager to see you smiling,
never marooned or in grief,
your every cry comes as thud to me,
I rather prefer to swallow all your sorrow.
I like your every touch,
it thrills me top to bottom,
your soft sweet face melts me down
I hardly can get up to look at any other thing.
I am addicted to your well being
avoid all the time any hardship,
your pleasure is paramount in my mind
I do not bother about my own comfort.
I have little worry about anything
if I can hear a few pleasant words from you,
I can topple the mountain
the moment I feel you love me.
Golden Girl
I saw her while walking
On the street of New York,
The crowd was on the move,
But her face got engraved
In my mind forever.
She also looked at me
Perhaps seeing me as a foreigner,
Turned her face away immediately.
In the tide of time everything perishes;
After so many years those curly
Silky hair, some of them caressing
Her cheeks, wide open eyes,
Soft looking face,
Soothing skin, bright white complexion
Still remain as fresh as ever in my mind.
My mind flies as a white pigeon,
Goes to her house, sits on her window,
Sees her sleeping on her bed
Covering herself with a bright blanket
Keeping her face out of it.
She wakes up at the flapping of the wings
Of the snow-white pigeon.
She senses the pleasure of a message,
Catches the bird that seems
To be happy to get caught by her.
She kisses the bird
With honey touch of her pink lips
As if she is whispering ‘how are you’?
A Mermaid Loved Me
I lived in a lonely island
with animals and birds
sitting at the sea shore
listening to waves’ roar.
Once a mermaid appeared
wading through the waves
she was agile and anxious
stopped looking at me.
Her face was so beautiful
a spring of affection
innocent giggling
dragged my eyes towards her.
She gradually came nearer
climbed up to my lap
caressed my face
with her petal soft fingers.
Bountiful love from her heart
pierced through my chest
I could not talk to her
nor she could talk to me.
A big wave drenched us
I enjoyed her honey touch
she embraced me tight
tears rolling down her cheeks.
Baltic Queen
It was our first voyage.
The Baltic Queen sailed
from Tallinn, capital of Estonia
in the afternoon, the sun here
sets late unlike our country, India.
We got a marvellous sea view cabin,
Self-contained with attached bath,
toilet, comfortable two beds.
My wife and I looked out of the
big circular window, calm blue sea.
Everything gradually disappeared
only the sun in the sky and
water surrounding us, no mobile link
isolated from rest of the universe
on the surface of the earth,
at horizon the sky and sea met to kiss.
Announcement came in the room
about safety aspects, night programs
above all dinner and breakfast timings.
We were very hungry after the city tour;
went from our eighth floor to seventh,
a big dining hall, seats were reserved
hundreds of people took meal together
lot of varieties of food and fun amused us.
Going back to cabin time passed so fast
looking at the endless sea being covered
by the black dense hair of night goddess.
We fell asleep only to wake up just before dawn
small islands with peaceful huts welcomed us
hundreds of them picturesque, one after the other
the inhabitants were having boats instead of cars.
Soon the Queen docked at Stockholm, we got down
taking with us a memory we never had in life.
Pilgrimage
Our son and I walked twenty kilometres
in a single day in Himalayas, twelve of it
was so stiff, narrow and slippery
due to intermittent drizzling,
that even those on horses were panicky
as the horsemen were unable to control
the direction of the horses on zigzag way.
You initially tried to climb on a horse
but declined when you became scary
after sitting on its back
as you heard people sometimes fall off
