About this ebook

The biggest pitched battle in Brazilian territory took place on February 20, 1827, about 13 km east of the current city of Rosário do Sul. Alvear (commander of the platine republican army) disguised his movements in order to make Barbacena (commander of the Brazilian imperial army) believe that he was chasing the rear of a retreating army, when in fact all his troops were close by. The battle lasted eleven hours and its end did not mean the end of the Cisplatine War. According to Brazilian historians, “Passo do Rosário was an accumulated series of tremendous imperial errors, responsible for not having had a stupendous victory there”.

    Im  1:  Theater  of  War.

WAR  OF  CISPLATINE  OR  GUERRA  DEL BRAZIL,  1825-1828

It  was  a  conflict  between  the  Empire  of  Brazil and  the  United  Republics  of  the  Rio  de  la  Plata,  for the  possession  of  the  Cisplatine  Province,  the region  of  the  current  Oriental  Republic  of  Uruguay. In  Argentine  historiography  it  is  called  the  War  of

Brazil  or  War  against  the  Empire  of  Brazil.

    7

The  term  Cisplatine  (cis,  below,  from  here  + platin,  relative  from  Brazil  to  the  Rio  de  la  Plata), indicates  the  geographical  location  of  the  territory  of the  former  province,  east  of  that  river;  in  Castilian  it was  known  as  the  Eastern  Province  of  the  Río  de  la Plata,  constituting  what  is  now  Uruguay.

    Im  2:  Theater  of  Operations.

Located  at  the  entrance  of  the  Rio  de  la  Plata estuary,  the  Cisplatine  Province  was  a  strategic area,  since  those  who  controlled  it  had  great  control over  navigation  throughout  this  river,  and  access  to the  Paraná  and  Paraguay  rivers,  transport  routes  for

    Andean  silver.

    8

The  region  was  disputed  by  the  crowns  of Portugal  and  Spain  since  the  foundation  of  the Colônia  do  Santíssimo  Sacramento  (1680),  by  the Portuguese,  being  the  object  of  several  territorial treaties,  of  which  the  main  ones  were  the  Treaty  of Madrid  (1750),  the  Treaty  of  Santo  Ildefonso  (1777) also  called  Treaty  of  the  Limits,  for  having  decided the  possession  of  the  territory  for  the  Spaniards, and  the  Treaty  of  Badajoz  (1801).

In  Spanish  possession,  with  the  independence of  the  United  Provinces  of  Rio  de  la  Plata,  it  was constituted  in  that  country's  territory  until  1816  when it  was  invaded  by  General  Carlos  Frederico  Lecor  - commander  of  the  Prince's  Royal  Volunteers Division  -  to  the  United  Kingdom  of  Portugal,  Brazil and  Algarves,  in  the  War  against  Artigas.

On  July  31,  1821,  it  ceased  to  be  just  an occupied  territory
