About this ebook

Beth is a private detective commissioned by the local municipality to investigate all new employees. Mekedo became a person of interest since she was a foreigner from one of the African states. She came through a labour broker named Marais. he and his associates were operating a human trafficking operation.

Sam, Stanley, Michael and Joseph entered the country through the same channel. Marais treated everyone as merchandise up for sale. After a few years, Sam and his friends had become citizens and somehow Joseph owned a pharmaceutical company. He was intending to expand his business activities by buying any enterprise of his choice.

Joseph was running a mafia-style organisation employing Marais and his white friends.

Sam fell in love with Mekedo, but she was a handful challenging everyone including her employer. In her mind, no one could tell her she was doing something wrong.

She fell foul of the law because her documents turned out to be fake. She was facing deportation because she had a criminal record in her country. At the same time, she was popular among the opposite sex and Sam thought she was not honest with him. He became possessive and a few men became victims of his anger. None of his victims could lay charges against him fearing victimization.

Here we go, I am still a writer aspiring to become an author. Writing has been a hobby since my teens. I have no specific genre since I am still trying to establish a particular writing style. when it comes to reading, I prefer action and mystery stories, I might add romance and sci-fi.

    Chapter 1

    Reversal of fortunes

Beth received a call on her cell phone from Margaret. She was sitting in her office reading some of her case notes. She was still the same old sexy Beth. She was not making any progress in the Marais investigation.

None was able to tell her anything that could help her case. It was as if everybody who knew something was afraid to say something to the police. Even Claudette was no longer forthcoming.

Even as she was no longer a police officer working for the government, her association with Calvin was a possible hindrance. Everyone knew Calvin to be a police officer. Some thought Moss was giving him orders. Calvin appreciated his attitude about crime.

    Hello, Beth speaking, she said.

Hi, this is Margaret I work for the city newspaper.

What do you want with me?

Can we meet somewhere and talk.

I am busy right now but maybe later today.

I will expect your call then.

I will not call you; meet me at the Berea club at 16.00 hours.

That’s my baby, I will be there sweetie.

    How will I recognise you?

Do not worry about that, I know you.

What do you know about me?

I know you were a police officer.

    Who told you that?

I have to find out things about people of interest, Liebenberg told me why you lost your job.

Margaret ended the call. Then she drove to Candice’s house. She found Kevin talking to Marais. Marais seemed fragile.

She saw plaster patches on his twisted face. He survived the beating but he was still sickly. Joseph wanted him to live and learn.

Hassan and his deputies were ruthless animals, but perhaps Marais would follow orders next time. She noted that something was going on between them.

    What happened to you?

Some tough guys did this to me.

Where is Candice? she asked looking at Kevin.

She is now staying at Jody’s.

    Did you finally marry her?

    I had no choice.

Is that why she is at Jody’s place.

Well, she is now in charge there, you know that Jody died and someone had to step up.

Is this some kind of an organisation?

Stop asking too many questions, you might fall into ditches.

    Okay then, see you around.

She started walking towards the door.

Marais said, I like your arse, please come back here.

She walked back towards the men. Despite his ugly face, Marais was a charming chap. He was not born ugly, but Sam and Candice damaged his natural looks.

She stood there waiting for him to say something. He stretched his huge hand and he pulled her closer to him. She looked at him wondering what was in his mind as if she did not know.

Margaret could do anything to get some kind of information yet some people were criticising Beth for applying unorthodox methods for information leading to the arrest of criminals.

    I like you, baby girl.

Do I have to like you too?

You can even hate me but I will still like you.

What do you want from me?

    This is what I want.

Are you sure about that, you seem to be sick.

I always know what I want and I usually get it.

So you pick on any woman, fuck her and throw her away like a dirty rag.

    That is not my style.

What, you fuck them and marry them.

    Do you like that?

What happened to Moaner, your presumed wife?

She betrayed me so why should I care what happens to her.

Do you know she has a baby with a foreigner from God knows where?

That was a stroke of luck good or bad.

    Why do you say so?

I think she is back with Candice at Jody’s place go there if you want more information.

Margaret knew Moaner and Candice were no longer friends, so why were they both at that house? Something was not making sense.

Looking at Kevin, she realised life has no guarantees for anyone.

Her idea of becoming rich instantly became irrelevant because Kevin failed to provide. Someone was making choices for him.

The lifestyle she was hoping for became ashes. Gale-force winds could blow those ashes all over the horizon far away from her reach.

A few days ago, Kevin was a wealthy man driving expensive cars and living like a king.

Now he was throwaway garbage married to a slut he despised. Her friendship with Moaner spoiled everything.

Perhaps he made bad choices and he was reaping what he sowed. She needed to know why he had to marry Candice.

Whoever was running that outfit was merciless. She had no idea how he was going to take care of her unborn baby. She was still standing there trying to map out her future.

I wish you would stop imposing yourself on my cookie.

    But you still like this.

Are you going to rape me?

If I have to I will.

    Get on with it then.

Kevin said, She is carrying my baby.

If you cannot make up your mind, I will be walking out in three seconds.

What were you thinking, how could you impregnate a bitch like this one, she is a bloody gold digger.

    I am ever so sorry.

    Sorry is for stupid idiots.

Hassan and his two hooligans appeared. Everyone froze becoming statues. Everyone saw the men were carrying pistols or revolvers in the holsters.

Kelvin thought Joseph sent Hassan to deal with him. He was not afraid of death but Hassan’s torture methods were barbaric. He could cut off a man's ear for not listening.

Marais knew what was coming. His hand was pulling out his gun when a single bullet hit the hand holding the gun shattering his knuckles.

The gun cluttered on the floor as he held his bleeding hand trying to stop the bleeding.

Marais did you think you could take one of us out, your hand can’t even hold a gun without shaking.

One fellow said, You are a lousy shot, next time I will blow off your head.

Maybe even your protégé Moaner can shoot better.

Margaret did not scream she had no idea Moaner and Marais had some kind of friendship.

She stood looking at the two men she once thought were capable of achieving anything. They had become two old men with no future.

With Brody gone, who was going to protect her? Caswell was not capable of even defending himself. His family were like aristocrats living a protected lifestyle.

    Hassan looked at Kevin.

He said, You know that you will be next if you stray off course.

He then told his followers to take care of the traitor. Marais could end up at the farm and do proper farming.

Claudette was still there managing operations for Joseph.

She did not know that Joseph was once a captive at that farm.

    He looked at Margaret.

    Is he your boyfriend?

He was just a pest seeking to please his dick with my cookie.

Who do you think you are kidding?

Marlene appeared wearing her G-string only. She seemed to be high on something. Her eyes were red as if she had been crying. She lit a Cigarette and she sat on one of the couches.

She took a glass and poured liquor into it. No one bothered to look at her except for the two hooligans standing by the door.

The presence of Hassan prevented them from doing or saying anything.

She was looking at Hassan standing in front of Margaret. His hand seemed to be caressing her cheek.

That very hand could easily take her precious life. He was capable of anything at any time anywhere. Only Joseph could control him.

He was saying something to her and Margaret was nodding her head. Perhaps she was trying to please him hoping he might enrol her as a member of his group.

However, Hassan had no faith in reporters. He thought they were self-serving sensationalists.

Then he walked out. His hooligans followed him. They took the gun belonging to Marais.

She then became aware of the blood on the carpet. Kevin was no longer in the room. Margaret looked at Marlene thinking she was not sober.

She said, I have an appointment with someone this afternoon, would you care to come along.

"Hey girl, just who do you think you are you don’t even know me and you think I can tag along with you.’

Sorry, I thought we met before.

I don’t walk around in your circle kiddo back off.

Can I introduce myself then, I would like to be your friend if you would allow me.

Let me wear something decent or should I come as I am.

It makes no difference to me if you come naked or not.

    Okay, let us go then.

No, I was joking, wear something.

    Whose blood is this?

    That is your boyfriend’s blood.

    Don’t joke like that.

    Who said I am joking.

No one can touch my boyfriend.

Who is your boyfriend if I may ask?

    You have a snotty nose.

Marlene then went to wear something. She came back wearing a dress that could have been a designer dress.

She looked elegant her beauty became evident. Margaret blinked twice stunned by the instant transformation of character.

Margaret noticed the transformation wondering if she had been pulling her leg. Marlene was a classy woman by nature.

She was wearing a designer dress Margaret could not afford. The necklace she was wearing was pure gold with small diamond stones.

She followed Margaret to her car. They found Beth talking to a well-dressed man at the bar. Beth was wearing a shoulderless dress a glass of liquor was on the counter with her fingers caressing it.

Margaret recognised him as one of the local drug lords. She wondered if Beth was aware that she was talking to one cold-blooded chauvinistic man.

Margaret was trying to rope someone to replace Kevin, but he was not fly that she could lure into her web. Kevin was easy to fool, but not this one.

Margaret introduced Marlene to Beth and the man stood looking at Marlene. He seemed to recognise her.

His face lit up as his brain placed her in a certain category.

He thought that she was the hottest girl he had ever seen but still failed to identify her.

Beth noticed that Marlene was looking at her newly found friend intensely as if she knew who he was. She became aware that Marlene was not a regular slut on whose face she could spit.

She was wondering if Marlene knew who he was or if she was simply playing up to him. Marlene knew who he was but remained quiet.

Margaret said, Can we find somewhere to sit.

She cast her eyes around and she saw an empty table at the far end corner. They all walked towards the table.

Marlene sat next to Margaret and Beth sat next to David.

Beth looked at Margaret thinking that she had a familiar face. She was certain that she saw that face somewhere.

You said that you wanted to talk about something.

Yeah, what can you tell me about Lucy?

Why do you want to know anything about her?

I have an assignment to write a story about her.

So why are you asking me instead of talking to her.

She does not return my calls.

I cannot tell you anything at this stage as that might jeopardise my investigation.

Yes, but you can tell me why you have to investigate her.

It is about the murder of her husband.

Do you think she killed him herself or perhaps she hired someone?

    We have nothing concrete yet.

Anyway, why are you investigating when we have a police force for that?

Margaret did not know Beth was once a police officer but the department did not need her any longer.

She had no licence to investigate Lucy except for local government employees.

Whatever she might unearth cannot be acceptable as evidence in any court of law.

While Beth and Margaret were talking, David and Marlene engaged in their discussion.

She was very relaxed after having established who he was.

They attended the same school and David was one of the playboys. She had no idea of his current involvement in criminal activities.

They were talking about those bygone days but Marlene was more interested in the present. He was a bachelor and she was single. She seemed to forget about Hassan.

She wanted to know about his occupation. He seemed to be well-off judging by his clothes. Yeah, he was well off but his money was blood money.

She had no idea that he owned several sleazy hotels and motels. Marais met Candice at one of his hotels.

She did not know that he preyed on unsuspecting women like her. However, Marlene was not a stupid woman. She could figure out things quickly.

She was a product of street life and abuse.

His charm did the groundwork. She thought that she could trust him. She was walking into the lion’s den with her eyes fully open but blind.

Margaret was saying, This Lucy woman seems to have a violent streak.

Every human has a limit in life.

But someone is pressing her buttons.

Beth was no longer interested in her questions.

She said, If you need to know more about her, call this person and he might be willing to tell you something.

    Thank you, my dear.

She gave her Moss' card. She then stood up and she walked out. Margaret remained seated for a while. She thought of going to Jody’s place. She called Candice from her cell phone.

Candice responded, You better come here.

Margaret decided to go to Jody’s place. She parked her car in the driveway. She saw several cars there and she thought something was happening in that house.

Someone opened the door for her. She stepped into the lounge looking at the faces of the people. There were at least a dozen men and women. There were more women in that room.

She saw Candice and she walked towards her. She sat next to her and they began talking.

She noticed the wedding band on her finger. She did not compliment her or say anything regarding her marital status.

That subject was hurting her pride. Maybe she became jealous because Candice was not a white woman.

Someone offered her a glass of wine. She wondered if the wine contained the sex stimulant. Then they went to Candice’s office.

    Are you throwing a party?

    I want to start a swinger’s club.

    Do people still do that?

People will never stop fucking each other.

Is that why you called me here.

I came across a stack of videos and DVDs, Kevin and Marais could be paedophiles.

That is not serious right now; I need to have some link between Lucy and Jody.

    But Jody is dead.

    "And she
