The Beginning
Luke! Time for school,
cried Grandpa from downstairs, as Luke finished getting ready for school.
Coming, Grandpa,
he replied as Luke came running down the stairs.
Easy, bud, this isn’t the Olympics,
Grandpa jokingly remarked. Do you need a lift to school?
No thanks. Jake’s dad is giving me and Will a lift,
Luke responded as he grabbed his backpack.
Ok, have a good day, kiddo,
Grandpa said.
Later, Grandpa,
Luke replied as he walked out the door and ran down the street towards his friend Jake’s house. He wondered what would be going on at school today.
As Luke arrived at Jake’s house, he saw his friend Will also running towards the house.
Hey, Will!
Luke shouted.
What up, man?
Will replied as they gave each other a high five.
Same as always, dude,
Luke replied.
The front door flung open, and Jake rushed through with his dad in tow.
Morning, bros,
said Jake as he greeted them. Ready for another crazy day?
Pretty much,
Luke replied.
Jake’s dad greeted them by waving to them while talking on the phone. Whatever it was he was talking about sounded important and Jake’s smile began to fade and started to look depressed.
Then he hung up and opened the door of his van. Come on, kids, hop in.
Everyone got into the van and Jake’s dad pulled out of the driveway. As they rode along, the boys looked out the windows watching their town. Jake scrolled through his phone uninterested in the car ride or socializing. Not much was happening in their town, and it felt the same as it always did – another boring day. As Luke was looking out the car window, he noticed the town’s historic ruins.
Did you kids hear about the new discovery at the ruins?
asked Jake’s dad.
Luke turned away from the window.
Not really, what did they find
asked Luke.
It’s top of the hour, maybe it’s on the radio
Jake’s dad inquired,
Jake’s dad turned on the radio and began listening.
This just in, a new area of the ruins that was recently discovered is being surveyed for information on what secrets it contains. According to the local curator, the new area will be open to the public in a few weeks.
That sounds interesting
said Will, Plus isn’t our class going there tomorrow?
Yes, I think our teacher will probably be discussing it in class today
added Luke,
What is so important about that place anyway, it’s just a bunch of old rocks gathering dust,
Jake replied sarcastically.
Then Jake’s dad interrupted him,
Watch your tone young man
he bluntly said, I hope you learn to appreciate what that place represents, plus your grades need improvement according to what your teachers told me yesterday on the phone.
Yes, dad.
Jake replied while looking away.
His dad rolled his eyes with disgust and continued driving.
Their town was average, except for the ruins nearby - a big tourist attraction. The boys had known each other for years, but they were not always friends in the beginning, Luke and Will have been best friends since Elementary school and Jake was more of a rival to them, mostly trying to outdo them in school. That changed in junior high when the three of them were forced to work together on a project and Jake realized that they work better as a team. After that they all became good friends. The van pulled up to the school, and the boys got out and waved goodbye except Jake who seemed upset.
Have a nice day, boys,
Jake’s dad said yelled to the boys as they ran up the sidewalk. As they got to the door, the school bell rang; they were technically late. They shuffled inside, feeling disinterested in class today. They crept into the classroom and quietly slid behind their desks, while their teacher, Miss Tyler, stood before the class with enthusiasm in her eyes with announcements.
Good morning, everyone. I have two announcements to make today. We will be heading to the ruins for our field trip tomorrow. However, the new area that was uncovered about a month ago, it will not be open to the public, due to their current survey of that area,
she said.
What’s so different this time about the ruins?
asked one of the students. There hasn’t been anything new about that place for years.
The ruins have so much history that we don’t even know about,
replied Miss Tyler. Ok, now on to the second announcement. We have a new student starting today.
On cue, a pretty girl with brunette hair and glasses carefully walks through the door and to the front of the classroom.
This is Alexis. She’s a transfer student,
said Miss Tyler.
Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?
Okay,
she responded softly. Hi, I’m Alexis. You can call me Lexi. I just moved here with my brother and mother. I love to read about history, especially from what I heard about the new areas of the ruins that were unearthed, there might be new discoveries waiting to be revealed.
Everyone in the classroom was curious about what she said. Some of them, including Luke and Will exchange glances and nod that she might be a nice girl to befriend. The rest of the class decided to remain quiet while she finished her introduction.
Thank you, Alexis. Why don’t you have a seat next to Luke,
Miss Tyler suggested. Now, everyone, get your textbooks and open your books to chapter 15.
Everyone took out their textbooks and resumed class as usual. Luke observed Alexis seated next to him and thought she was lovely.
Later that day, Luke and the others saw Alexis walking home alone.
Hey there,
said Luke. My name’s Luke, and this is Will. He’s the strongest kid in class, and Jake, another one of my other friends.
Hi, my name’s I'm Lexi,
she replied. I saw you three in class this morning.
Yeah, I was sitting next to you,
said Luke as he chuckled. He blushes.
Easy, dude,
said Will.
Wanna join us?
We’re going to a café down the street," said Luke.
Sure,
Alexis replied. I would like to see the town.
Yeah, we’ll show you around,
said Jake as they all walked into town.
They walked down the street, showing Alexis where everything was, and helped her familiarize herself with the shops there. They took her to the café in town and they each got a juice from the cafe.
After a nice afternoon with her new friends, the group prepared to head home for the evening.
Thank you, guys, for showing me around town,
Alexis thanked.
You’re welcome,
Jake smiled.
See you tomorrow,
said Luke.
Bye, guys
said Alexis as she left.
Later, dudes,
said Will, as he darted towards his house.
As everyone waved their goodbyes, Luke turned towards home and began running.

The Trip
The following day, the students went on an excursion to the ruins. No one was sure about what was hidden there. The bus drove by the ruins that were mostly built into the mountain. Many paths consisted of stairs left behind by the original builders but were restored by the curator and his staff. Alexis looked through the bus window, amazed at how the place looked.
The school bus screeched to a halt and the doors flung open, the students filed out and were met by the curator of the ruins.
Welcome, class. Today I’ll be discussing the history of these ruins.
The curator greeted and guided the class towards the main building. Then he walked toward a mural that told the story of the ruins.
These ruins were built thousands of years ago when myth and legend were reality. There is a legend of this place that began one thousand years ago. It started with a keeper who protected what he claimed was a gateway to another world: A World of Magic. This world of magic has never been seen by anyone for a long time, but some say this world is filled with magical beings, the likes of which many of you could have never believe existed.
Everyone had a look of curiosity on their faces, except they were wondering where he produced the idea of this Legend, But one day, the gateway disappeared, and was sealed in the temple or crumbled away. These ruins were eventually abandoned though no one today knows the true reason. Some say the gatekeeper still lives protecting this mysterious gateway, waiting for the day the bridge between both worlds can be opened again,
the curator finished.
Is that all?
asked Will in a slow curious tone.
That is all. I do not know for certain how true this legend seems to be or how much is myth but what lies on these walls depicts the story, but most of the other chambers that display it are full of secrets that have been lost for centuries. Just recently we discovered an untouched area of the ruin about a month ago,
the curator added.
That seems strange because that’s when I left my old home and moved here,
Alexis said curiously.
Could be just a coincidence,
responded Luke. There’s always something we don’t really understand.
What else can you tell us?
Jake said sarcastically, trying not to laugh.
Well, as you can see, these ruins depict four warriors bearing something powerful here. These warriors came here and may have left something here, but they never returned,
the curator stated as he pointed to a section of the mural that showed four Knights with the appearance of a wolf, a lion, a bear, and an eagle.
Luke stared at the mural for a minute and felt strange like the mural was familiar to him.
Throughout the day, the students went to the ruins to examine what was open to the public. Each room had a fascinating history with a mystery, about something extraordinary being guarded within the ruins, but not everything was as it seemed.
Later that afternoon, when the class was preparing to depart, the curator walked up and asked the students to help him with something.
We are doing a survey of the area, I would like if some of you would volunteer to stick around and help me with the survey,
requested the curator. Do I have any volunteers?
The curator scanned the students and
