    little garden girl with the black thumb

    as a child i was a jealous gardener

    fingernails stained and caked with red earth

    stealing marigolds and crab apple blossoms

    from picket fenced yards

    stashing them in a rusted-out tomato soup can

    filled with grimy rainwater that would slosh over

    the front spokes of my bicycle as i rode

    down to turkey creek five miles out of town

    to a bridge that covered a trickle of mountain

    shed water and my hideaway in the woods

    here

    i was a collector of dead things

    planting and planting

    but inevitably the wilting stems

    would slump forward succumbing

    to ambivalent nature

    and i would come racing back with hope

    that something was alive

    i didn’t understand the lesson

    we do not grow without roots

    my father was a car enthusiast/car junky/would spend more than what he earned on a project/despite the empty fridge at home/a reckless kind of collector/there was nothing in the world that he loved more than a
