Chapter one

The Hidden Tome

Aria rummaged through the attic of her late grandmother’s cottage, a place where time seemed to stand still, surrounded by relics of the past. Sunlight streamed through the small window, casting a warm glow over the dust motes dancing in the air. Among the assorted heirlooms and forgotten trinkets, a peculiar leather-bound book caught her eye, its cover worn and edges frayed from age.

Curiosity piqued, Aria carefully lifted the tome, feeling an unexplained energy pulsate through her fingertips. The book felt alive, as if eager to share its secrets. She blew off a layer of dust, revealing intricate symbols embossed on the cover, none of which she recognized. The lock that once kept prying eyes at bay had long since broken, inviting her to explore its contents.

Settling down amidst the clutter, Aria gingerly opened the book. The pages, surprisingly well-preserved, were filled with arcane symbols, diagrams of celestial alignments, and writings in a language she couldn't decipher. It was unlike any book she had seen in Loria, a village where magic was often regarded with suspicion and fear.

Fascinating, she murmured to herself, her gaze transfixed on the vivid illustrations of spells and enchantments. Aria had always felt a connection to magic, an innate pull she could neither explain nor ignore, despite her village's apprehensions.

As the day waned, Aria became so engrossed in the tome that she scarcely noticed the setting sun. The dim light of the attic made it difficult to read, but she was reluctant to leave, the book casting a spell over her.

Her concentration broke when her mother’s voice called from below, Aria! Dinner’s ready!

Startled, Aria closed the book with a snap. Coming, Mother! she called back, hastily hiding the tome under her cloak. She knew her discovery would raise too many questions, questions she wasn’t ready to answer.

Over dinner, Aria’s mind wandered back to the mysterious tome. Her parents chatted about village matters, none of which could capture her attention.

Aria, you’ve been quiet tonight, her father observed, passing her a bowl of stew. Is everything alright?

Yes, Father, just tired from cleaning the attic, she replied, managing a smile. The lie felt heavy on her tongue, but the thought of sharing her discovery filled her with unease.

Later that evening, in the solitude of her room, Aria retrieved the tome from its hiding place. By candlelight, she poured over the pages, a sense of wonder washing over her. Each spell and incantation seemed to leap from the pages, begging to be understood.

Her fascination was interrupted by a gentle knock on her door. Aria, may I come in? her mother’s voice, soft and concerned, filtered through the wood.

Just a moment, Aria stammered, quickly concealing the book beneath her bed. Yes, come in.

Her mother entered, a knowing look in her eyes. What were you hiding just now? she asked, sitting beside Aria on the bed.

Aria hesitated, then decided to trust her mother with her secret. I found something in Grandmother’s belongings, she confessed, retrieving the tome. It’s a book...of magic.

Her mother’s eyes widened as she took in the sight of the ancient tome. This was your grandmother’s, she said, a mix of awe and concern in her voice. She was a gifted mage in her youth, something few in the village knew.

Why didn’t you tell me? Aria asked, surprised by the revelation.

It was a part of her life she chose to leave behind, for the sake of her family. Magic can be a dangerous path, Aria. It demands a balance few can maintain.

Aria looked down at the time, and her resolve strengthened. I want to learn, Mother. I feel...drawn to it, like it’s a part of me I’ve always been searching for.

Her mother sighed, a mix of resignation and understanding crossing her features. If this is a path you choose to walk, you must do so with caution. Your grandmother’s book holds powerful knowledge, but not all of it is meant for the light-hearted.

Thank you, Mother. I promise to be careful, Aria said, a sense of purpose igniting within her as her mother’s silhouette disappeared beyond the doorframe. Alone once more, she directed her gaze towards the tome, its allure undiminished by words of caution. This discovery marked a pivotal turn on her path, leading her away from the familiar surroundings of Loria towards uncharted realms ripe with magic and mystery.

Drawing a deep breath, Aria flipped the tome open once again, the candlelight beside her bed dancing as though celebrating her resolve. Despite the uncertainty that lay ahead, she felt a surge of exhilaration; ahead lay a path fraught with peril yet brimming with the promise of the unknown.

As she leafed through the pages, Aria whispered to the room, This is just the beginning, isn't it? The walls offered no reply, but the shifting shadows cast by the candlelight seemed to beckon her forward.

Determined to embark on this journey with eyes wide open, Aria decided to delve into the tome's mysteries right there and then. Let's see what secrets you hold, she murmured, tracing her fingers over the ancient script.
