Eye of the Seeress / Voice of the Poet - Ralph Metzner
Prolog

Prolog
In this book I have gathered mystical and visionary writings and poems from a thousand years of European literature – writings that have particularly inspired and delighted me.
I wanted to create a completely bilingual collection because German and English have been my native tongues from childhood and youth onward, and because I love the literature of both languages.
I translated German texts of Meister Eckhart, Goethe, Rilke and Brecht into English, and visionary poems of William Blake into German.
The Canticle of Brother Sun by Saint Francis of Assisi was originally written in Italian and I have consulted several English and German translations to arrive at my versions.
The mystical visions and poems of the Abbess Hildegard von Bingen were first recorded by her amanuensis, the monk Volmar, in Latin, the written religious language of her time. We do not know in what language her voices spoke to her. Here too, I have consulted existing English and German translations to arrive at my versions. I wrote about Hildegard’s teachings and visions of mystical greenness (viriditas) in my book Green Psychology (Park Street Press, 1999).
The first and longest section of the book is taken up with the Völuspa, one of the songs of the Elder Edda, by an unknown author (perhaps a woman) around the 10th century, in Iceland. Since it was written in the Old Norse language and script, I have here too consulted several modern English and German translations to arrive at my versions. Völuspa means Visions of the Völva.
Völvas were clairvoyant seeresses in the pre-Christian Nordic culture. In this poem an unnamed völva is relating her visions in response to questions posed to her by Odin/Wodan, the knowledge-seeking god of shamans and poets.
Ever since I wrote about and quoted from the Völuspa in my book The Well of Remembrance (Shambhala, 1994), I have admired this poem with its awesome visions of the origins of the world, the creative activities and conflicts of gods and humans, and stunning prophecies of planetary destruction and renewal that seem to be coming true in our times.
