AN INTRODUCTION TO EMOTION & ITS ORIGIN
The human feeling may be the weirdest of the universe’s countless mysteries. Many events may be understood using sound reasoning and logic, allowing us to confidently forecast future events and chart a smooth path through life. Human emotion, unfortunately, is the most unpredictable variable in the result of many decisions. Emotion causes individuals to act irrationally, and the worst part is that you are not immune to this!
However, if you investigate the mechanics of emotion, you will quickly see that they are a useful instrument.
Your emotions influence your capacity to do things ranging from simple cerebral actions like studying to complicated physical acts like painting or creating. Emotions serve as a link between the mind and the body. When an Olympic sprinter crouches at the podium at the start of a race, their sentiments of ambition, excitement, worry, and fear all collide, causing a series of physical changes.
Adrenaline and testosterone are both released. Breathing becomes deeper, and blood pressure rises. The heart rate increases. Several muscles stiffen up ahead of time. All of these acts are lessons gained via generations of evolution, and they all aim to improve your chances of survival.
However, not every circumstance is a race for life or a gold medal at the Olympics. The majority of difficulties in your life may be solved with sensible, logical thought followed by suitable action. Most of your objectives can be fulfilled in the same manner. Your emotions are most beneficial when they are utilized to lead your body toward the goals of your thinking.
However, if you don’t know how to use your emotions and send yourself mixed messages, your emotions will respond by behaving in seemingly chaotic ways, creating inconvenience or, in the worst-case scenario, deadly accidents.
The modern car is a relatively straightforward technology to handle, and most adults can become good drivers with just over 24 hours of training. Furthermore, the rules of the road are straightforward and intuitive, with most people learning through observation and practice rather than study. Despite this, millions of minor and catastrophic motor vehicle accidents occur worldwide each year. Surprisingly, emotional failures are the leading cause of car accidents, not intellectual ones.
For more than a decade, distracted driving, such as driving while using a cell phone or even driving while applying makeup, has been the leading cause of traffic accidents. Much research on the addictive effects of cell phones has been conducted, but even without them, we all understand that using a smartphone is a gratifying pastime. The incapacity to put personal safety over this reward reflects our society’s current level of emotional mastery. Since the Enlightenment several hundred years ago, all attention has been focused on objectivism and empiricism, leaving the profoundly subjective world of emotions largely untouched.
With the obvious harm that emotion produces, it’s no surprise that being overly emotional is regarded as a negative trait! In general, you are encouraged to make rational, logical decisions. To accomplish this, you may find yourself fighting your emotions throughout the majority of your adult life. You may begin to feel that concealing your emotions, particularly unpleasant ones, is the key to living a successful and calm life.
But if you’ve tried it, you’ve probably seen that negative and positive feelings are inextricably linked. Disappointment is the result of hope. To avoid being disappointed in the future, you must refrain from ever hoping. Shame stems from a sense of pride or honor.
You must never be proud of anything to never be embarrassed about it. So on and so forth. The most popular way to completely avoid negative feelings is to isolate yourself from them, transforming yourself into a robot-like being. This may keep you from experiencing bad emotions, but it also keeps you from experiencing positive ones. You may become jaded and nihilistic if you don’t have any joy in your life.
There is an alternative. You can employ your emotions as the powerful psycho-physiological instruments that they have evolved to be.
You can learn to comprehend the reasons and repercussions of your emotions by evaluating them from a factual and realistic standpoint. You can adopt a mental state that represents true calm, joy, and tranquility in any scenario if you have a comprehensive awareness of the nature and function of your emotions. You will rapidly experience restored vigor and liveliness within you, allowing you to perform at peak mental and physical potential without expending valuable mental energy and time combating your emotions.
This book will detail various revolutionary ways for controlling your emotions using concrete neuroscientific data. Each method is intended to give you complete control over your emotions in easy, practical ways. You eat when you are hungry. You drink water when you are thirsty. But what if you’re demotivated, worried, insecure, or sad? This book was written for you if you don’t know the answer.
Everyone has a goal, no matter how lofty or modest. The ultimate goal for most people is to achieve happiness and joy. But, for good reason, it is difficult to live a life free of anxiety and misery.
Even unpleasant emotions are internal reactions to outside stimuli.
Sadness, like burping, sweating, or any other biological event, is a physiological process. They are all survival tools.
Any tool, when used incorrectly, can be inconvenient or even dangerous. However, this does not preclude you from using the tool. Rather, uncover the instances in which the instrument is most effective, and the conditions in which employing the tool delivers the most advantage. If you have a hammer, you can either use it to injure yourself by swinging it recklessly, or you can use it to build a robust house. Emotions, like thoughts, are among the most personal instruments you may use.
Emotions enable you to wield many other sophisticated tools, and if they are not well understood, they can inflict catastrophic damage on your life. However, at the end of this book, you will have a clear understanding of how to interpret every emotion you encounter and how to best express them. You will turn yourself from a slave to your emotions to their master by understanding their purpose and nature, as well as employing a range of tried-and-true tactics.
WHAT EXACTLY IS EMOTION?
Over the twentieth century, notable academics in the fields of psychology and neurology devised and suggested more than 90 different definitions of emotion. Given the tremendous complexity of emotions and their highly subjective nature, this is normal. Emotions are difficult to define because they are not like thoughts, which manifest as mental images or noises that may be transmitted simply through words, drawings, or sounds.
Emotions are best described as physical sensations or feelings. Some emotions, such as passion, fury, and enthusiasm, are regarded as hot, whereas others, such
