Arrival
Sarah Adams's car rolled to a stop before the imposing gates of Blackwell Manor. The ironwork was intricate, depicting scenes of pastoral life that belied the estate’s sinister reputation. A chill breeze stirred, causing Sarah to shiver as she stepped out of her vehicle. She couldn't shake the feeling of unease, as though unseen eyes watched her every move.
The gates creaked open on their own accord, a silent invitation into the heart of darkness. Sarah hesitated, her hand hovering over the flashlight in her coat pocket. She was no stranger to haunted places, but something about Blackwell Manor set every nerve on edge.
James Blackwell expects you,
a voice called from the shadows, causing Sarah to jump. A figure stepped into the light, a man in his late thirties with weary eyes and a grim set to his mouth. I'm James,
he said, extending a hand that Sarah noticed was trembling slightly.
Sarah Adams. You sent for me?
Her voice was steady, betraying none of the apprehension that gnawed at her insides.
James nodded, his gaze flickering to the manor as if expecting it to spring to life. I did. Thank you for coming. I... we need your help.
The estate loomed over them, with windows like dark, unblinking eyes. As they approached, Sarah noted the overgrown garden, its once-manicured beauty choked by weeds. Statues peeked through the foliage, their expressions distorted by moss and time, adding to the manor's abandoned feel.
Inside, the air was thick with dust and decay. Sarah's flashlight beam cut through the darkness, revealing peeling wallpaper and portraits of people whose eyes seemed to follow her. The silence was oppressive, a tangible presence that weighed on her shoulders.
This way,
James murmured, leading her through the grand foyer. The chandelier overhead was a tangled mess of cobwebs, its crystals dulled by years of neglect.
As they ascended the staircase, a cold draft swept through the hall, causing the candle in James's hand to flicker. Sarah paused, the hair on the back of her neck standing on end. For a moment, she could have sworn she heard a sigh, as soft as silk sliding across skin. She shook her head, dismissing it as a trick of the mind.
James showed her to a small sitting room where a fire crackled in the hearth, its warm glow a stark contrast to the chill that seemed to permeate the very stones of Blackwell Manor. He offered her a seat, his eyes avoiding hers as he spoke.
My wife, Elizabeth, died here under... peculiar circumstances. Since then, things have been happening. Things I can't explain.
Sarah leaned forward, her interest piqued. What kind of things?
Objects moving on their own, doors slamming shut, that sort of thing. And sometimes, at night, it sounds as though someone is wandering the halls, crying.
And you believe these occurrences are related to your wife's death?
I do. That's why I contacted you. I've heard of your reputation, Miss Adams. If anyone can get to the bottom of this, it's you.
Sarah nodded, her mind already racing with possibilities. I'll do my best, Mr. Blackwell. But I must warn you, these investigations can uncover truths that some might find... disturbing.
James's expression hardened. I need to know, Miss Adams. No matter what.
"Very well. I'll start first thing in the morning. It's best to walk the manor by daylight before attempting any contact with the.
