    Chapter 1

    A Day to Play

C ome on, Emily, said Dylan. We’re going to be late!

Dylan wasn’t sure where Emily was, but she needed to hurry. Today was the first ball practice for the neighborhood summer team. It was just for fun—kids ages five to ten could play—but it was always exciting to practice for the games against other neighborhoods.

Dylan looked at his red wagon. He’d filled it up with everything they’d need for practice. It had gloves, bats, extra softballs, snacks, and bottled water.

Now all he needed was his little sister to hurry.

    Emily, he called again.

I’m coming! Emily said. She ran around the corner of the house to meet Dylan.

Dylan standing with wagon. Emily running up to him.

    Are you ready? he asked.

    I think so, Emily said.

She was worried. This was her first year of being old
