Chapter 1
A new problem always appears just when one has been addressed successfully. Jason Harris would know from personal experience. As a detective in Sydney, Jason had mixed feelings about living there. Although he enjoyed New Orleans in America more, he eventually moved here for love with his wife; unfortunately, they could no longer stand each other, so they parted ways eventually.
Jason Harris had once been an exceptional investigator, but his divorce had taken its toll, and his work performance had declined rapidly. Two murder cases had ultimately been turned over to colleagues when Jason failed to solve them himself; what especially frustrated Jason was how quickly these newcomers recognized and apprehended the suspects; why hadn't Jason been able to solve these cases himself if it had been so easy - was his mind just gone altogether?
Jason sat back in his office chair and considered this question. By now, he should only be in his early forties - should his career be complete by then? But as Christopher Wat had already hinted at something similar. Lost in thought, Jason reached for one of the photos sitting nearby to distract himself.
At that point in their marriage, Adele Fips brought two of her children from her first marriage, Ann and George, whom she had had through this one. They seemed content together. He had blonde shoulder-length hair with grey eyes; his wife had long black hair with playful eyes; both still possessed beards then. At Adele's feet were four children from both unions: two were brought from Adele's first marriage, bringing total children up to four.
Joris Farel came rushing in, proclaiming, Donna and Dan have solved another case!
Jason groaned deeply as Joris announced, but nodded his head slowly when asked which case Joris meant by that announcement - that of a hanging drunkard perhaps?
Joris quickly shrugged his shoulders. Jason, are you losing it yet? Dan and Donna already solved that last week - it was about that kidnapped girl that was raped and strangled; Dan tracked down Chuck Grad for questioning who confessed everything that happened despite not understanding why he did what he was doing.
Joris sat opposite Jason and looked deeply into his eyes, warning that failure to solve their next case would make them look foolish in front of their colleagues. Jason nodded; just then came a knock on the door from Rosi - the secretary for their police chief!
What has asked you to come to his office,
Jason informed Rosi. She rolled her eyes and left.
Jason responded Well then let's do it then
, standing up.
Soon enough they had reached the office of their boss's boss. With respect they knocked respectfully but were met by an abrupt Come in!
At first, it wasn't ideal. He was about to retire and had only incompetent newcomers around him.
Here they are, finally; I need to speak to both of you,
he announced with satisfaction. Joris and Jason took their seats facing their superior and prepared themselves for whatever would come.
You may have noticed that you haven't solved a case recently, which we don't need incompetent people here to solve. If the next case goes badly for you, I will transfer you down to street police.
Joris and Jason swallowed hard. This was probably one of his harshest threats yet.
Luckily for them, another case just came in."
Wa rummaged through his papers and pulled a pile of notes from the clutter on his desk, one being an announcement: a murder had taken place at 34th Street Apartment containing Peter Smith who has only been dead six hours! Get involved as quickly as possible to help bury this man."
Joris and Jason leapt up and set off immediately.
Jason and Joris quickly located Peter Smith's high-rise, as he resided on the tenth floor. Once at his apartment, they used an elevator. It wasn't difficult to locate either; police officers, emergency service providers, and some individuals from Jason's worksite all converged there for an investigation, though no one could touch anything until all traces had been secured. Once inside they saw that Peter wasn't poor - in his living room was an intricate Persian carpet decorated with rosewood furniture while expensive paintings hung all throughout his apartment before finally discovering his body at his bed soaked with blood.
Poor guy,
Joris would murmur whenever they found a body. Although Jason had been doing his job for nearly sixteen years, his stomach would often tighten at seeing people being murdered - even after decades of doing it himself.
Jason soon noticed a bloodsmudge on the wall at the crime scene and recognized its meaning immediately, yet something prevented his mind from accepting its truth. Joris then revealed it: Blood. Joris finally said it: The murderer wrote their message in their victim's blood."
Joris was correct. At first, Jason struggled to read what was written on the wall in macabre ink; eventually however he managed to read what it said: Don't talk about or write about guards! Don't take pictures or mention names!
Do you understand what this means?
Jason was asked by his partner. To his disbelief, Jason did not. Taking another closer look, Jason noticed the body still wearing pyjamas that were covered with blood. According to Jason's assessment of what had occurred, someone had killed the individual with a knife wound in their chest area.
"He aimed for his lungs so he wouldn't be able to scream anymore.
Joris nodded, taking pictures of the crime scene. Jason continued observing Peter, and noticed him reaching for something at his desk drawer. Carefully opening it, Jason removed a brand new pistol which had never been used - completely brand new with no signs of wear! Showing it to Joris, his partner shrugged their shoulders: Lots of people have guns; however did he also possess a firearms license?
Jason began to think. Everything pointed to a particular direction. Its Perhaps Peter knew who killed him and took precautionary measures against reprisals?
Joris replied, If that is indeed the case.
At the Police Department, detectives attempted to piece together clues. Peter was autopsied while Jason and Joris searched every inch of Peter's apartment without finding evidence of murder weapon; Joris was very proud to show Jason a black hair that belonged to the suspect (Peter had brown hair; curious neighbors claimed no one ever came near). Joris in particular was certain it belonged to Peter; Jason however wasn't so convinced as neither had seen who may have committed this act either.
Wouldn't it also be possible that it could have been a murderer?
asked Doug Nelson.
He had recently joined the
