Boston Phantom Serial Killer - Shirley J. Miller
Chapter 1
After visiting the crime scene, Jade and Kari finally got back to their Beacon Street office about 5:00 am. The police were now predicting it was a serial killer that they were dealing with and that would change the way they all looked at their current case loads.
There wasn’t much investigating that could be done this early, so the sisters headed to the gun range for a little target practice. Both sisters were excellent shots with all of Kari’s shots hitting the target’s head, while all of Jade’s were well placed around the target’s chest.
Both sisters owned Glock 19 Gen5 MOS Semi-Automatic Pistols. That being the gun they had both used while on the Boston Police Force. When they opened their PI agency a few years back, they had both applied for permits to carry concealed weapons. While they were lucky not to have to use them that often, neither sister felt in control without their Glocks close at hand.
It was now months after Boston’s corrupt police detectives Ben Stark and Gary Owens were convicted. They had both seemed like decent men and the twins had worked several cases with both of them. But after their Cartel involvement was revealed, the two police detectives had been dealt with by swiftly relieving them of duty as police corruption charges were pending. Only recently had their replacements been named. Joe Miller and Rick Canon were promoted from within the police department and two new academy cadette graduates were hired to help complement the count of available Boston officers.
Twin sisters Kari and Jade Madison of the Madison Investigations Agency had no way of finding out who the Sinaloa Cartel had chosen as replacements for Ben and Gary as their inside plants. But they knew it was very likely that at least one of the newly promoted detectives was playing both sides. They just didn’t know which one. And since they preferred to stay out of the Sinaloa Cartel drug matters after their last catastrophe, they did not go out of their way to find out who the Cartel’s new informant was.
They did, however, keep in continuous contact with Tony Esposito, the undercover officer who had escaped from local drug gang captivity and was returned home unharmed to the police force. Fortunately for him, his cover had not been blown and Tony was once again put in a covert under-cover position with the notorious Boston Patriarca Mafia family.
Tony had not only become a close friend, but a most reliable contact for the two private detectives. They also maintained their relationship with the older Officer Jack Wilder, but his slower and much more methodical methods did not particular agree with their own since of urgency. So, while they remained friendly, he was not a regular asset while he was on the police force. However, after Jack retired, he had approached the two sisters about the possibility of working with them part time. Wanting to keep all options open, they accepted Jack’s part-time status as one of their go-to detectives. Their agency was starting to grow.
So, it was Jack they assigned to the Jefferson kidnapping case not long after Tony Esposito’s release. Having just met with both David and Susan Jefferson at their Kenmore Square apartment about the recent discovery of the body of their kidnapped daughter Anne, Jack was headed back to the Madison Investigations Agency with what he had gleaned so far from the parents with the police report they had filed in hand. Unfortunately, he had not come back with any more solid leads than they already had. But he did manage to recover the dead girl’s computer and phone and that’s where Wilder would start his investigation.
It was after 8:00 am when the investigators left the firing range and arrived back at their office. Karen had things at the 35 Beacon Street Agency pretty much under control after the Christmas and New Year’s upheavals which gave Kari and Jade time to catch up on the new cases that had just recently popped up. Karen has been assisting the twin detectives at the Madison PI Agency for almost three years and the sisters considered her an important member of their team. Knowing her two bosses were hooked on Dunkin Donuts, Karen made sure to have a box of chocolate covered donuts waiting for them when they arrived. As Kari and Jade walked into the office, the donuts were the first thing to catch their attention.
Thanks Karen,
they both said at once. "Now all I need is my extra strong expresso. Jade, I’ll turn your teapot on when I crank up the Breville Orache Expresso machine – which is almost paid for by the way," Kari laughed before Jade could get yet another word in about how much she’d overspent on it. Drinking their tea and coffee, the sisters were about to review the new cases that had just recently come in as Jack arrived with his report on the murdered Jefferson girl.
Donuts and coffee! Seems I’m right on time,
Jack said as he entered the building. What more could a guy want?
Pouring him a cup of coffee, Kari asked how the meeting with the Jefferson’s had gone. Was there anything new from the parents about Anne that the police didn’t catch?
Not really,
Jack offered. They confirmed what the police already had. That she was a little on the wild side and was known to use drugs – socially anyway. But she wasn’t an addict. Anne was an average student at Boston University in her freshman year. I’m going over to the university later to question some of her friends. I’m hoping I can get a little more background information and find out about any boys she may have dated.
Did you bring her computer and phone as we asked?
Jade routinely questioned him.
Certainly did. Which of you two is the computer wizard?
Jack then asked.
That would be Jade,
Kari answered him. If there’s anything at all on there, or any regular sites that Anne visited, Jade will find them.
Better keep that in mind, Jack - should you ever decide to use the company computers. Nothing gets past Jade,
Karen teased him.
I’ll remember that,
Jack laughed.
We never got to tell you about the other new case just in," Kari added.
So, what’s up?
Jack was curious.
Too much,
Kari answered him. We just left Boston Harbor where still another girl was murdered in the same style as our client’s daughter, Anne. It’s been quite a disturbing morning already!
Karen had just picked up their voice mail and had an even worse announcement. Another kidnapped teenage girl,
Karen piped in. "This girl has been gone 2 days and rather than wait any longer for the police to come up with anything, the parents called us. The girl’s name is Caroline Netherlands and she’s only thirteen years old. She went missing on her way to school a couple of days ago.
Caroline’s parents are John and Pam Netherlands and they want to hire you to find her before something happens to her. There’s been no ransom request, so we’re afraid we may be looking at human trafficking again. But now, after last’s night’s prediction by the Boston police - that there may be a serial killer on the loose - we may have to rethink our strategy. The Netherlands live on Ellery Street. It’s a charming quiet middle-class neighborhood in Cambridge. Their daughter Caroline went to Rindge Avenue Middle School." Kari filled in the most recent details.
And because no ransom has been asked, we were thinking that if she is not already dead, she may have been kidnapped by another one of those human trafficking outfits out of the harbor. They grab innocent boys and girls and keep them hopped up on drugs. They then force them into the sex business,
Jade added. Or even worse, maybe the newly announced serial killer has her.
"Or she simply ran away! That’s what we have to find out. We should be making this the priority case as we do not yet know the status of the girl. But we are still going to be hot after the murderer who took Anne Jefferson. But unfortunately, she’s
