Clark Graham

I started writing at a very young age, and was greatly encouraged by my teachers at school. One of my English teachers used to wade through the stack of papers that students would submit for writing assignments. She would find mine, and always read it first. That had a huge effect on me. Now I am supported by family and friends who read my writings and leave me feedback. I don't seem to stick to a particular genre, but write the stories that I would want to read. I hope you enjoy my efforts.

    Prelude

Police Chief Jack Warden sat at his desk looking over the prior week’s crime report. There were two stolen bicycles and a hit-and-run fender bender. He had solved all of them.  Then he looked over the job offer he had gotten from his friends in Pullman, Washington. Pullman wasn’t a big city, but it was a lot bigger than Colfax, Washington where he was now. With the university there, it was a more interesting mix of crimes Something that could challenge his crime solving ability better.

He was bored and wanted a change. Bill Fredrick’s old office was across from his. It still sat empty. He had not bothered to replace the dishonored detective. Jack had wanted more to do so he did all of the detective work himself, but it still wasn’t enough. He was still bored.

It didn’t help that people were coming in all the time asking for Chief Warden expecting to see his father, who had just retired. Jack was in his late twenties, muscular with light brown hair, but his father had been a Vietnam War hero and Jack was just someone in the older man’s shadow.

Susan Charles came into the room. Stop looking at that letter. Don’t you have a plane to catch?

Jack looked up at his forty-something office assistant. She was of average height and had dishwater blonde hair that was starting to get a hint of gray. She had been his father's office assistant also.  Sometimes she acted like she was Jack’s mother, which further irritated the Chief of Police.

No, it’s in the morning, but I will need to pack and get to the airport in Spokane tonight.

Susan was aghast. You have not even packed yet? Do you have your tux ready to go? You know you can’t put that in a suitcase. You have to use a garment bag.

I know, I know. I have the tux already, and have mostly done my packing, just a few odds and ends and then I am off.

Is Sheri there alone? She will be so happy to see you. Susan smiled.

No, she is with her friend, Amie Williams, and her husband, Fred. The two women are making all the wedding arrangements while they are there in San Juan. The hotel where we will spend our honeymoon, is within walking distance of the church.

I am so happy that I will get to go to the wedding. It took a while to talk that husband of mine into it, but in the end it was worth it. Puerto Rico here we come! Susan smiled at the thought.

I am glad you are able to come to the wedding, but the groom isn’t going to make it unless I leave now. Jack stood up and headed out the door.

He drove his car home to his apartment. Soon he would be living in the big house that Susan's parents had left for her when they died. She had enough money to where neither one of them would ever have to work again, but that was against his nature. He wanted to carry his own load. He kept thinking that even if he took the job in Pullman he could still commute to work, although it would be a lot farther.

He pulled into the parking lot and made his way up the stairs to his small apartment to finish packing and then he would be off to Puerto Rico. He loved Sheri and could not wait to spend the rest of his life with her. He just didn't like the idea of having to fly half way across the world to do it. There was a nice church right down the street that could have done just fine.

    Chapter 1

The large Cathedral was build by the Spanish when they controlled Puerto Rico and was in the heart of Old San Juan. It was a beautiful reminder of the Spanish architecture of the time. The city had grown in around it, and now it was in the bad part of town. Still the parishioners came to light candles and pray that their lives and those of their loved ones would improve.

A teenage girl sat near the back and was praying for her grandmother who was very
