About this ebook

A perilous encounter amidst the icy wilderness...

In a daring quest, Isabella embarks on a treacherous journey, dispatched by her monarch to negotiate an alliance with a secluded enclave of ethereal fair folk dwelling in the frigid snow-covered expanse far north of her homeland. As the relentless blizzard threatens to claim her life, a radiant and enigmatic saviour emerges from the blinding whiteness. It is none other than the mythical and resplendent snow dragon, Shalara, who, together with her heartmate, Aric, ventures beyond the protective borders of their realm to rescue the imperilled human lost in the snow.

An even more harrowing mission awaits...

Aric and Shalara bear the daunting responsibility of escorting Isabella back to her realm, delivering a crucial message for her king. Yet, their path is obstructed by a sinister and imperceptible adversary. They find themselves swept off course by a mystical tempest, navigating strange and unfamiliar territories, where they cross paths with other dragons and valiant warriors, who join forces to set them back on their mission. On their journey, they are guided by an intensely magical black dragon.

Missions thwarted, missions fulfilled, and new quests unique to their fate...

While Isabella yearns for a triumphant return to her king, her heart longs for more time with Aric, who has swiftly claimed a significant portion of her affection. Yet, the dashing fey warrior is too alluring for her peace of mind. Aric, too, finds himself irresistibly drawn to Isabella. However, he is acutely aware that any romantic entanglement between a mortal and a fae is fraught with insurmountable challenges. Against their better judgment, they succumb to love's enthralling grasp. However, destiny intervenes, compelling them to grapple with new challenges and embark on a mission to broker alliances with unexpected allies.

As they navigate this treacherous path, their forbidden love deepens. Will their affection meet a tragic end, as they both dread or could unknown magic intercede to save their tender hearts?

    Prologue

    The Past

In the old days, Aric, a young and brave warrior from a magical place called Veil, stood firm in the middle of a fierce snowstorm. Each icy gust hurt his determined face, but he didn't move. He was waiting for a special moment he had dreamed about - the arrival of his soulmate. This soulmate was meant to be his partner and a strong ally in the challenging battles that life had in store. Aric had thought about these dreams a lot, trying to make sense of them. And today, the line between dreams and reality would be blurred, and his soulmate would finally appear.

Aric's dreams were filled with a vivid image of a huge, shiny egg. Its swirling patterns looked like the snowflakes in the landscape around him. The egg glowed strangely as if it held amazing things inside. At first, there was just one crack in the egg's shell, but then it started to break into many pieces. It seemed like something mysterious was about to come out.

In the distance, a vast white figure started forming amidst the never-ending snowstorm. It had enormous wings that seemed as large as the sky, unfolding with a confident grace on each side. Aric's heart raced as he watched a majestic dragon head appear on top of a long, flexible neck, swaying like an old tree branch. Then, two bright, sparkling eyes opened and locked gaze with him, filled with an astonishing sense of familiarity. Even though they were far apart and surrounded by a snowy field, an unexplainable connection formed between them. This connection went beyond mortal understanding. It would forever unite the warrior and their new companion on a meaningful and destined journey, creating a bond that would last throughout his lifetime.

    Chapter 01

Ronan finished his job in the dragon scout enclave and put away his equipment in the communal room. His dragon companion, Azure, had just finished his shift, and Aric was getting ready to go out with his dragon friend, Shalara. Ronan and Azure had trained hard for this, and Aric had grown up while Shalara had become a beautiful young dragoness. Aric looked impressive, like a warrior from the Veil. He was tall and robust, with a handsome face and a mysterious air. His long, fair hair reached his shoulders, which added to his intrigue.

He wore a green tunic and dark pants that represented his heritage, as well as sturdy boots and a dark cloak that showed his toughness and adaptability. Aric's amber eyes were captivating and sometimes showed his hidden emotions when he smiled. Shalara was still growing but was already stronger than most other scouts. She had come from outside the normal realm, which made her unique. She was in her prime physically, but there was still a hint of innocence in her personality.

Yet another newcomer stakes their claim on the perimeter, remarked Aric nonchalantly, securing his fur-trimmed cloak. What marks this intruder as worthy of attention?

Ronan hesitated, a curious expression dancing upon his sharp features. This one looked up towards the sky.

Activity in the bustling room ebbed into stillness, all eyes fixated on the exchange. Interesting, Aric said. Did they see you and Azure?

Ronan deliberated. I’m not sure, he admitted. During our manoeuvre to the left, a fleeting notion crossed my mind… The young scout scratched his head. Yet, it was not to be. Upon our return, the stranger was looking elsewhere.

Intrigued by the revelations, Aric's interest surged, causing the fine hairs on his nape to stand on end. His partnership with Shalara had instilled the significance of such sensations. He had learned to honour his instincts within their years of joint training.

It's a female, then, a sense of inevitability tingled down Aric's spine.

Ronan nonchalantly shrugged. As far as I could see when we flew above her. Azure detects a feminine scent. Human, with a whisper of enchantment.

Curious, Aric mused, holding his silence despite his growing fascination. Magic among humans was rare, yet the dragons' senses were seldom wrong. A dragon's sense of magic has always been powerful; they could sense the tiniest hint of magic in any living being.

Shalara quickly came out from the large archway with her shiny ivory scales. She was less patient than the rest of her group. Using her long, graceful neck, she urgently nudged Aric's back, almost making him fall over.

Quickly, we have to go! Shalara urged. Quickly, right now! Shalara's thoughts echoed in Aric's mind, a connection they had established long ago. The young dragon had lost her parents in the snowy storm, and a foretelling vision combined with the pain felt from her unhatched shell had led Aric to her during a blizzard.

Be patient, my dear, Aric comforted as his hand affectionately stroked her scaly head.

We're leaving soon? she questioned, huffing. No, we need to leave right away! Urgency calls! Her urgency rang out, echoing the bond between them, which had formed before she emerged from her egg.

Aric quickly steadied himself, the other scouts looking at him with curiosity. But he didn't care about their questions. Shalara was clearly upset, and he needed to focus on her. He had learned to trust his instincts through years of training with his partner.

What is urgent, Shalara? Who needs us? Aric asked urgently.

Suddenly, Shalara, with her big mouth, grabbed Aric's arm. This was ultimately against the rules in the Veil Lair. Everyone knew dragons' teeth were dangerous, so they always avoided them. Likewise, dragons were forbidden to use them on others, particularly their heartmates. In all the years they had been together, Shalara had never acted like this before.

Aric tried to talk to her through their special bond. Let go, my love. I will go with you.

Quickly! Shalara's distress came through in their mental connection, making her speech sound jumbled.

Okay, my love. Let's leave right away.

Shalara let go and backed away, heading into the corridor. She paced anxiously, making every step seem urgent. Even though their companions stared at him in the quiet room, Aric chose to ignore their invasive attention. His dragon partner seemed agitated, as if she had a strange connection with the human woman at the edge of the room. He couldn't understand the extent of Shalara's awareness, but he believed in her intuition. Aric settled on Shalara's white back, and instantly, she launched them into the air with her huge wings. The exhilaration of flying was always incredible, but this rapid ascent through the freezing morning winds was even more intense than their usual flights. Shalara's unease was evident, and she spoke in a simple way like she did when she was a baby. Her youth sometimes shone through, and her innocence has always been an intriguing part of her.

There! Her thoughts echoed with strong emotions and a sense of triumph.

As they passed through the Veil separating the Lair from the cold, empty expanse beyond, Aric felt the magical ripples on his face, followed by the biting cold of the open landscape. He squinted through the wind and saw a figure by a small fire. The figure, wrapped in furs, looked up as Aric's silhouette blocked the sky. Even from a distance, Aric felt a powerful surge of energy. Frostwing Dragons were mysterious creatures, their shining scales and enchanted aura making them hard to spot in the snowy lands. It was rare for outsiders to notice them, which made this encounter even more significant.

There were rare occasions when outsiders were allowed to enter the hidden sanctum of the dragons and their ethereal allies. These occasions demanded a formal invitation and were taken very seriously. On one such occasion, Shalara, a revered Frostwing Dragon, descended from the sky urgently. Her companion, Aric, held onto her back as she landed near an unfamiliar figure. But the woman didn't react much to their arrival. Something felt wrong to Aric as if there was a severe problem. And one that he intended to find out and provide assistance if she needed it. He was unsure whether the human posed a threat to the Veil, and it was his duty to find out what she wanted and why she had travelled so far away from the human settlements in the warmer climate.

Shalara rushed towards the stranger, not giving Aric a chance to get off her back. She created a shelter with her wings to protect the frozen traveller from the wind and cold. But the stranger remained motionless, only watching Shalara's movements with wide eyes. She didn't so much as flinch or jump with fear when Shalara, a giant dragon, landed beside her. It was as if she was oblivious to the dragon.

As Aric approached, the woman finally looked at him. The woman's dark eyes remained fixated on Shalara until he initiated movement. When their gazes interlocked, an arcane quiver traversed the ground beneath his feet—or so it seemed. Jolted by the sensation, he propelled himself forward.

Are you an angel? a faint murmur reached him, the words of a woman teetering on the brink of exhaustion?

Aric was surprised by her question, but he managed to let out a chuckle. However, he became more worried when he felt a weak pulse of energy coming from the frozen figure wrapped in fur and ice. He knelt beside her and tried to assess her condition underneath all the layers.

You are very much among the living, mistress, Aric's touch grazed her pale cheek, a texture softer and colder than any living being should be. However, you have an icy coldness running through you. What is your name, mistress?

I— The woman cleared her throat and resumed, I'm Isabella.

In the night, Isabella's chestnut hair took on an almost magical quality, shimmering under the moon's gentle glow. Her hazel eyes seemed deeper and more enigmatic, reflecting the secrets of the night. A faint, captivating smile played on her lips, adding to her allure in the dim light. Her voice was soothing and a mere whisper, like a soft, nocturnal breeze. She wore attire fit for the practical and mysterious darkness, blending seamlessly with the night.

An honour to make your acquaintance, Mistress Isabella. I am Aric, and this is Shalara, my partner. What compels you to seek passage within our Veil?

I'm looking for a woman with beautiful silver hair styled in intricate braids, with sparkling ice gems scattered throughout. I need to find her because of a vision I've had, and I need to see her.

I'm acquainted with the individual of whom you speak. Aric reclined slightly.

The woman's description matched that of the Council elder - a validation permitting her entry beyond the Veil. Being in close proximity to her triggered his sensitivity to magic as if she emitted an intense but slightly wild energy, similar to the untamed power of a child. This raw and pure magic made him curious to learn more. A refined magic purity warranted further exploration by those on the other side of the Veil.

Shalara and I shall guide you within the Veil's sanctum.

Isabella's face glowed radiantly, making her irresistibly beautiful and delicate. Aric couldn't help but be captivated by her earthly charm and fragility, surrounded by severe ice and freezing temperatures. He knew she was brave enough to come out and face the chilly weather that separated the Veil from the surrounding villages.

May blessings be upon you. She let out a soft, relieved sigh, her voice barely audible but filled with tangible relief.

    Can you rise?

To her credit, she tried really hard, but she was getting tired. Aric became even more worried as her energy started to run out, and she looked on the brink of exhaustion with her eyes closing.

She is unwell, Shalara's thoughts surged with anguish. Her glow diminishes.

Such fate shall not befall her on my watch. Rage simmered within Aric.

He had recently discovered this delicate enchantress, and he was determined to keep her safe and seek assistance from the healers. His strange and sudden attachment to her should have bothered him, but being around her changed everything. Whether she was a human or not, her identity didn't matter. His heart recognised her, and her well-being became his utmost priority.

He didn't know what his fate would be, but he had a clear mission - to help her. Determined, he removed Isabella's old, worn-out hat, revealing her beautiful, dark hair. The wet fur she had used for warmth fell apart, showing how thin and cold she was. He could feel the chill on her skin just by touching her. She shivered violently from the freezing temperature, causing Aric to hurry to get her warm.

Shi, could you provide additional warmth? She's on the brink of freezing.

The dragon executed an unexpected gesture, tucking one of her massive wings beneath the girl. Thus, the girl didn't lie on the cold ground but on the warm dragon scale. Aric couldn't help but marvel at the uncharacteristic inclination of a dragon to tether itself to the ground in such a manner, if only momentarily.

The day had been rife with peculiarities centred around Shalara. Aric set about removing Isabella's threadbare, snow-dusted cloak. He was startled when he unveiled a set of warrior-style fighting leathers concealed underneath. The woman's complex persona intrigued him, although answers would have to wait for a more opportune moment. He shed her cloak and the thickest of her damp leathers, leaving her dressed in a dry cloth tunic, pants, and the embrace of the dragon's warmth. Her cheeks regained their rosy colour as blood surged through her veins, yet her delicate vulnerability persisted.

Pray to tell, what is wrong with you, mistress? Aric's hand grazed her cheek once he'd arranged her comfortably within the dragon's embrace.

Nothing but rest can cure me. I overexerted myself in the previous village.

In what way? Aric observed her countenance with concern, sensing her unease in the cadence of their exchange—perhaps even the presence of concealed truths. She would not be permitted to hide a thing, especially if he were to extend to her the sanctuary of the Veil. It was crucial to uncover her secrets, not just for that reason, but for reasons he didn't care to analyse, not yet anyway.

I can sense dragon's magic in you, he tried an alternative approach. I would prefer a comprehensive understanding of the individual and essence before inviting them into our refuge's core. You have to answer my questions before we go any further.

She didn't have any harmful intentions, so she looked away, showing a momentary glimpse of frustration in her eyes. It was quite an annoying situation.

I don't mean any harm to anyone, and it's not my intention to lie to you, she said. The magic isn't anything special, but it is an inconvenience for me.

What are you referring to? His curiosity grew as she calmed down, bringing new life back into her being.

Those opulent dark eyes returned to him. Healing.

A noble pursuit, I'd say. Aric was puzzled by her opinion of having dragon magic.

It's a novelty to me and very draining when I use it. It tugs at me, demanding my service whether or not I want or can help anyone.

What happened in the village? he inquired with gentleness.

An accident involving a young lad. I could not let him depart this realm and die. She started feeling less reserved and guarded as warmth spread throughout her body, and she began to relax.

You're a bona fide healer, then? Aric's fascination was piqued; true healers among humans were a rarity; it had been centuries since a human possessed true healing magic.

Isabella nodded, bemusement gracing her features. The power emerged several moons ago and surprised me and everyone else. It always drains me, yet it hasn't ever drained me to this extent before.

Shalara's protective wing lifted, allowing her head to nestle underneath. Is she ok now? Apprehension and concern filled the dragon's tone.

I am uncertain, Aric telepathically conveyed his thoughts to Shalara, mindful of the woman who trembled within the dragon's embrace. She thaws gradually, but her exhaustion troubles me. True healers use their strength and energy to mend others, but our healers have never been this weak after using their magic. This situation concerns me.

I can help her, Shalara said suddenly.

Aric was surprised by the growing power in Shalara's presence. Despite her youth, she hadn't shown the skill to create the healing mist called Dragon's Breath. But now, wisps of mist started forming around her head, moving closer to the fragile woman. Aric was even more amazed when Isabella reached out her trembling hand and gently touched Shalara's scaly cheek.

    Exquisite, she whispered.

As he looked into her eyes, Aric saw a blend of awe and trust. It was a rare and fantastic experience, especially for someone who had never encountered dragons before. Shalara held the highest place in his heart, even surpassing his own family. The connection between them went beyond everything else.

The healing mist grew, Shalara's power enveloping Aric's senses, but focused on the woman affected by frost. As the touch ended, Isabella smiled peacefully as she lost consciousness, overwhelmed by Shalara's revitalising energy. When the Dragon's Breath subsided, Isabella showed significant improvement. Her complexion became rosy, and her body emitted warmth. Aric wrapped her in dry fur and a thick blanket from his bag, securing her like a cocoon. It was time to leave; Isabella was now safe and could sleep peacefully under the protection of the Veil. Shalara adjusted her posture, extending her wings in a royal display, staying close to Isabella the whole time. Aric gathered Isabella's belongings, packing them in his saddlebags before placing her on Shalara's back. He then climbed on behind her, cradling Isabella's still form in his arms. A sense of unexpected comfort washed over him in her presence.

Isabella woke up feeling warm and cosy, a feeling she hadn't felt in a long time. As her senses came back to her, she noticed the white dragon lounging at the entrance of the room she was in. The dragon's eyes, which looked like diamonds, opened and closed slowly as it watched her calmly. Isabella struggled to clear her mind and sat up. She felt dizzy and held onto the bed for support. But even with her head spinning, she couldn't take her eyes off the dragon. She searched her memory and remembered its name.

Shalara, she whispered. Is that correct? Your name is Shalara?

In response, the dragon inclined its head. Yet, a voice resonated within Isabella's thoughts—a voice that bore the resonance of dreams unfurled into reality. Yes.

I am indebted to you for saving my life, Isabella replied. Thank you. I owe you a great service in return.

Such effort brings us pleasure, a male voice answered instead.

The tall man, who she had mistakenly thought was from another world, walked through the archway, passing by the giant dragon. He looked even taller and more impressive than she remembered. His appearance justified her initial reaction; he had long golden hair, intense amber eyes, a handsome face, and a strong and muscular body. He surpassed any warrior she had ever seen at her father's school. He was in a league of his own. Although she was expecting to meet the elusive Fair Folk, his overwhelming handsomeness forced her to stay rational in the presence of these mysterious creatures. Aric stood beside her bed, studying her with curious, intelligent eyes. Isabella couldn't help but be aware of her barely covered body, wearing only thin cotton underwear. The man grabbed a beautifully carved chair, turned it around, and sat on it backwards, resting his muscular forearms on the back.

Now, Mistress Isabella, might I inquire further regarding the vision you mentioned that guided you here?

Though he didn't say it out loud, his expression made it clear that he thought her mission was risky and foolish. Isabella knew the dangers of the journey she had just done before she had even left the safety of the castle. Very few people dared to venture into the hidden realm of the fair folk, and those who did often didn't make it back. However, she believed that instead of dying, most travellers were likely saved by the Fair Folk scouts and handed over to trustworthy locals in nearby villages who were sworn to protect their hidden haven. Isabella's decision to journey north was based on thorough research and stories of unconscious travellers being rescued by kind-hearted villagers, which helped her overcome any doubts she had.

Feel free to ask me anything, she inclined slightly, folding the warm blankets closer to her torso. Yet, despite owing you my life, my paramount responsibility is in delivering my message directly to your Council. Until I complete my duty and deliver the message, I'm sorry, but I can't give you any more information. I am sworn to silence by a higher power. I do sincerely apologise.

Each word caused a single golden eyebrow to rise. A sense of curiosity lingered in the air, even though Isabella didn't want to tempt anyone. Instead, she emphasised the importance of keeping her mission a secret. She had made her vow and solemn promise to her king, and she would never betray him or trust the information with anyone other than the one it was intended for.

Very well, he stood up, executing a twirl with the chair as if it were a show, repositioning it against the wall. Considering your reluctance to talk and tell me anything, I shall endeavour to secure an audience with the Council on your behalf. Are you fit for a brief walk? Or does that also constitute a forbidden revelation?

His sarcasm surprised her. She didn't expect someone as powerful as him to act like a spoiled child when things didn't go his way. Strangely, seeing this made her feel more at ease than anything else could. A single comment, paired with a slight frown on his attractive face, restored her comfort.

I am sufficiently recovered to walk. Thank you. Isabella replied as the dragon's head lifted. Isabella suppressed a chuckle, and the warrior strode toward the entrance.

Your attire rests in the armoire. I shall wait for you in the main chamber when you're prepared. The Council's curiosity concerning your presence likely mirrors our own.

He barely glanced at her before leaving, briefly touching the dragon's eyes before exiting without saying goodbye. Clearly, he was sulking, and Isabella couldn't help but find it amusing. Men, she thought, had similar behaviours no matter their magical abilities. Isabella chose to stay with the dragon, feeling a strange sense of comfort in Shalara's presence. She cautiously got out of bed, checking her condition. Surprisingly, she felt better than expected. Her feet and fingers, previously numb from the cold, throbbed but seemed to be healthy. Her muscles were also less sore after some stretching. Overall, she appeared to have no lasting damage from exposure to the harsh weather. Steadying herself on the bed frame, Isabella got up. She found her clothes in the cupboard, freshly cleaned and ironed as promised. She quickly got dressed, feeling her strength returning with each passing moment. When she turned around, she saw Shalara observing her. She stopped to twirl around to show her chosen outfit for the dragon's inspection.

Will I pass inspection? Isabella's lips curved playfully as she addressed the dragon.

The luminous white head nodded with a gentle rhythm. You appear quite distinct from other ladies. Your attire carries the air of a warrior.

Isabella's smile brightened as she gazed at the dragon. That's likely because I am a warrior, milady.

You can hear me? The dragon's words echoed within Isabella's thoughts, a phenomenon she had previously encountered only in dreams.

Hearing a dragon's speech in their mind was indeed a gift from all the creators. No human had ever been able to do that before. Still, Shalara sensed this human was important somehow and possessed dragon magic linking her to their race.

Yes, Lady Shalara. While I have never encountered a dragon before, let alone converse with one, I can indeed hear you. It's an honour that you choose to engage with me, Isabella replied, smiling. "Hearing your voice is like a breath of fresh air, and I am beyond thrilled that I'm able to communicate with you
