I started writing for fun when I was a kid but I didn't get serious about publishing until my 20s. After taking film and broadcasting in college I felt I'd found my true calling. I now write, direct, and produce ultra-low-budget movies. I've won two awards for my scripts; editor's choice for poetry and I'm published in paperback as well on Amazon. My first non-fiction book entitled, "I Know How You Feel..." is about my ten-year struggle with the death of my oldest son and how writing about it brought me back.

    Chapter 1 HIS STORY

I headed my Harley onto Mulholland drive among the Hollywood hills as I traveled on my way to my next client.  My helmet and leathers – all black – baked in the California sun, but that was a lot better than taking the chance of flying off the bike and choosing road rash in place of your skin.  And while I know I’m a nice-looking guy, not even a hobbit would choose road rash over natural skin.

Leaning my Harley Springer into the curves of Mulholland I was happy that my rich client was up here because you haven’t lived until you’ve ridden a Harley up here with all the twists and turns of the road.  Of course, I would have preferred going faster, but what are you gonna do?  There’s always some slow poke just around the next curve and I don’t fancy slamming into the back of a Mercedes and flying overhead until I crash-landed or something tall stopped me suddenly.

I’m a tech guy.  I’ve built my own business from the ground up since I was sixteen.  Now, ten years later, I work when I want, where I want and who I want to work with.  I did the travel thing, going around the world to exotic places, working in other countries, but I always came back to California and the good old U-S- of A.  Since I can afford to live here, Cali offers me everything I need with great weather most of the time.  And the traffic doesn’t bother me.  I just weave my bike in and out it and get to where I’m going long before anybody else.  But I have to keep my eyes open for rich assholes who are suffering from road rage from sitting in total gridlock for hours.  They watch you coming up in-between the traffic – which is legal in So Cal – and throw open their car door so you slam into it and go splat!  They can afford the insurance hit and just claim they were opening their door to get out to see what was holding everything up traffic-wise.  Trust me, I’m prepared to tuck and roll at any moment.

I pull up to the tall gates at my client’s address.  The house is set so far back off the road that you can’t see it due to the curve in the road.  I flip up my helmet’s visor and hit the call button mounted on the metal pole next to the driveway.  There’s a camera staring at me from about the call button and I scan the area while I wait for my client, R Walker, to answer.  There are two more cameras, mounted high on either side of the gate walls.  The service that screens my calls and sets up my appointments using a pre-requisite that I have established let me know only that R Walker has a technology home that runs everything.  Opening and closing things.  Turning lights off and on. Adjusting temperature and humidity.  Watering the garden, cleaning the pool, and probably even wiping their ass.  But who am I to make fun?  This is my business, fixing all the computer shit that goes bad.  I should be grateful - and I am.  It’s just that, lately, I’ve grown restless.  I can’t put my finger on what it is.  I know what’s going on in other places, on other shores.  It’s not like I can’t hop a plane and go anywhere on a moment’s notice.  I dunno.  I just want – something.

    Hello, may I help you?

My head snaps back to the speaker on the pole.  The voice that came out of that box was like sexy smoke rising and slowly curling upwards.  And that’s saying something coming out of that kind of speaker.  For the first time in a long
