Chapter 1: What Exactly Constitutes Hydroponic Gardening?
When discussing hydroponic gardening, we are delving into a particular method or subset of a broader field known as hydroculture. Hydroculture encompasses any approach where plants are cultivated without any reliance on soil. This practice has historical roots, as evidenced by mentions dating back to Francis Bacon. However, as with most narratives, things are not as straightforward as they may initially appear.
So, is the cultivation of water lentils considered a form of hydroculture? Indeed, it is, just like the cultivation of spirulina, which incidentally boasts remarkable health benefits and is often hailed as a superfood.
The reality is that certain plants, such as water lentils, possess the natural ability to thrive without soil. Consequently, the term hydroculture
encompasses a wide array of methods, rendering it somewhat impractical for those interested in growing lettuce and tomatoes in their home gardens.
Enter two distinct branches within hydroculture: hydroponics and aquaponics. These two are essentially subcategories of hydroculture, and it’s advisable not to engage a hydroculture gardener in a debate over which is superior. The discussion can be as spirited and animated as the age-old cats vs. dogs
debate among pet enthusiasts. Nonetheless, we can objectively explore the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of both approaches.
Let’s commence with aquaponics: this method involves growing plants in water environments that feature a comprehensive ecosystem within and around the water pool, supplying the necessary nutrients for your plants organically. So, when we mention aquaponics, we’re essentially discussing the presence of a pool teeming with fish, insect larvae, frogs, and other life forms that collaboratively produce the essential sustenance for your plants.
On the flip side, hydroponics revolves around providing a water and nutrient solution to nourish your plants. The fundamental concept entails dissolving nutrients in water, allowing plants to absorb them through their roots. There are additional considerations, such as ensuring the roots remain oxygenated, which we’ll delve into later. However, at its core, hydroponics hinges on this principle.
Don’t be alarmed by the term solution
; it may sound chemical in nature, but it draws from chemistry without necessarily involving harmful chemicals.
All the nutrients required for your plants can be sourced in an entirely organic manner. These nutrients encompass minerals like nitrogen, carbon, potassium, magnesium, iron, and calcium—simple molecules readily obtainable from nature without undergoing chemical processes that harm the environment.
So, what advantages does hydroponics offer over aquaponics? Let’s explore:
To begin with, hydroponics is user-friendly. Adding the necessary nutrients to a water system to feed your plants is significantly easier than establishing an
