    PROLOGUE

James walked into his office and sat down at the desk. Today was Monday and it was the start to his week; another week of inputting numbers and fixing other people’s mistakes. James is a Senior Accountant at a company in New York. Taking this job three years ago, it wasn’t really what he wanted, but at the time he had no choice. James' weekdays are now filled with spreadsheets, numbers, and annoying co-workers that seem to only have problems. Honestly, this life is better than his past.

Today was filled with conference calls and meetings. The end of the year was approaching quickly, and the department had to prepare for next year; this meant reviewing budgets, spreadsheets, and year end numbers. The accounting team was running in circles around each other to get everything together in anticipation for the new year. Everyone in the office knows Accounting is off limits for the first couple of weeks — which also means that this is the time when everyone brings last-minute issues to their department.

Later that day, James found himself eating a salad for lunch across the street from the building he worked in. One of the very few people he could tolerate, Anne, asked him to join her for lunch. He had no issues with that and needed out of the office before Kathy, a department head, sent him one more email about something he already answered hundreds of times. The two of them would often come here for lunch, and he liked it. It was a cozy café, with good food.

Are you going to answer me? Anne asked, waving a hand in front of James face.

    Umm, yes, James replied.

Anne gave a look of defeat on her face. She took a bite of her salad and rolled her eyes.

I asked if you were up to coming to my sister's birthday party Friday night, Anne asked.

A look of disgust covered James' face. He didn’t like going to nightclubs and having to deal with drunk people. Anne watched him as he sat there eating his salad.

Are you going to answer? Anne questioned.

Oh, I was hoping you forgot you asked the question, James said smiling.

Anne smacked James on the arm. She laughed to herself. She knew better than to ask but thought she would give it a try.

James stared out the window. A man standing outside talking on the phone caught James' eye, and he could not look away. Anne turned to see what kept James' attention. Seeing the man, she agreed he was a good-looking man. The man stood there with his back to them.

That view from behind is well worth it, Anne said, finding herself turning to get a better look.

The man hung up the phone and found his way over to the entrance to the café. Once inside, the man walked straight up to the counter and placed his order. For some reason, James couldn’t take his eyes off the handsome man. He continued to watch him walk all the way to the table where the man was seated.

Anne snapped her fingers in front of James' face, snapping him out of the trance he was in. James turned to look at Anne and discovered her smiling.

You find him attractive? She asked in a playful way.

I mean… James smirked while eating his salad, I wouldn’t mind a round or two with him.

Anne and James continued to eat and gossip about people at the office they liked and whom they couldn’t stand. When they both finished their meals, they collected their belongings and started to make their way towards the door. James was stopped by a tap on the shoulder. It was the man he was watching earlier. James turned around and came face-to-face with the man’s beautiful hazel eyes. Looking him up and down, James noticed that he was a bit taller than the man. But the more he focused, all of his thoughts and surroundings began to fade away.

So, are you going to stare at me like that and not at least get my number? Said the man with a flirty grin.

Umm, umm, I mean... James stammered, trying to find more words to form.

The man slipped a card into James' shirt pocket. Winking at James, the man walked out of the café. In a blink of an eye, the man was lost into the sea of people walking outside. Anne and James walked back to the office. Once they arrived, the feeling of irritation covered James again. Just walking into this place sucked the life out of him.

James sat at his desk, with the door to his office cracked. Off in the distance, James could hear Sara from Human Resources introducing some new person to the different team members. James zoned out the noise and focused on the work he needed to get done.

    ***Knock, knock***

James looked up as Sara popped her head into his office.

Do you have a moment? Sara asked.

Yes. James said, planting a smile on his face.

Sara pushed the door open, and standing behind the door was the man from the café. James stood to his feet and held his hand out for the man to shake it.

I’m James, the Senior Accounting Manager around here. James said.

Nice to meet you James, I’m Nick Roades. Nick said, shaking James' hand.

Mr. Roades is now the Director of Client Administration. Sara said.

Nice to meet you, James said, as he took his seat at his desk.

Sara and Nick left James' office. James pulled the card out of his shirt pocket and looked it over. Sure enough, the name on it was ‘Nick Roades’. James looked the card over and saw it only listed Nick’s name and phone number.

At 5 o’clock, it was time
