    Chapter 1

    EXODUS FROM THE

    SPIRIT REALM

Years ago… The portal beamed from the golden sparks that flickered, alluring the senses that had longed for the connection. She walked closer to get a better view, ignoring the fear that tried to imprison her steps. She turned and looked to the side; a tear seeped from her eye, and a smile graced her face as she took time to inhale the gifted air, blocking out the omens.

She lowered her eyelids and walked through. She heard the voices of sentinels indistinctly in the background. The foundation no longer existed as her body slowly descended into the abyss. Her wings were of no use at the speed of light that escorted her to Earth Realm. Colors flashed, and her flesh swayed in the opposite direction of her route as she fell through the portal.

Her body collided with the cold, wet pavement, acknowledging Earth for the first time as she lay in the fetal position. The vast wings sheltered her flesh; still she trembled for the warmth of her adoration. The heavy rain poured from the sky, leaving her skin drenched and her hair plastered on her face. She reached to touch her back and felt nubs where her wings once resided. She began to panic and touch all over her naked body while the thunder roared like a male lion protecting his pride. Two bright lights flashed, and the screeching sound of tires skidding across the wet road alerted her. She quickly placed her arms in front of her face to brace herself for the impact. The car came to a sudden stop. The summer rain continued to shower down; the windshield wipers rushed from side to side, screeching with every swipe. The engine turned off. The door opened.

Hey, are you okay? the person yelled from the car.

She lowered her arms once the bright lights were turned off.

    Wait a minute.

The person reached back to the back seat and grabbed a blanket. She rushed out of the car and walked over to the lady who sat on the pavement, sheltering her body with both arms. She quickly tossed the large blanket over the lady to protect her from the rain.

Are you okay? What are you doing out here in the rain with no clothes on? Can you talk? What is your name? she asked.

The young lady slowly looked up. She looked into the woman’s eyes, and she saw her peace, love, and passion.

    Eshe, she said.

Let me help you out of this rain, honey. My name is Marybeth, the lady said in a southern drawl.

She proceeded to assist Eshe off the wet pavement and walked her to the car. Marybeth looked at her stomach.

Are you pregnant, honey? she asked.

Eshe nodded her head. Marybeth opened the back door hastily, and Eshe crawled inside. Marybeth looked around to see if anyone was looking and quickly closed the door. She hurried to the driver’s seat and closed the door.

    Are you hungry? she asked.

The rain pouring on the hood of the car answered back. Marybeth looked in the rearview mirror.

She turned around swiftly and noticed the wet blanket on the backseat.

    Eshe.

Marybeth looked on the floor of the back seat. She thought her eyes were deceiving her as she saw the bag of groceries that she had bought at the grocery store. She yanked the blanket off the seat, hoping to see a remembrance of Eshe. Traces of feathers were spread across the seat. She hurried out of the car and looked as far as her eyes would allow. She looked around, but there were no signs of the mysterious woman. Marybeth got back in her car; she tried sticking the key in the ignition, but she dropped it from her trembling hands. The rain continued to pour down as a nervous Marybeth tried to get herself together. She picked up the key and slowly drove it into the ignition. The wipers started swiping the rain off the windshield from left to right. She placed the car in reverse and quickly shifted into drive. Marybeth drove slowly in the rain for about five minutes until she saw someone walking.

Eshe, she said as she pressed her foot down on the pedal to accelerate the small vehicle.

She rolled down her window and noticed the person was wearing a raincoat very similar to the coat that she had on. Marybeth looked at her coat and looked up. She slammed on the brakes once she got alongside the person. The person stopped walking and turned around. Marybeth stared at the person as the person gazed back at her.

This can’t be, Marybeth said as she looked at the emulation staring at her in the rain.

The clone turned around and walked off. Marybeth stayed on the side of the road until the spitting image of herself was gone. She was afraid to move. Her chest tightened as she thought about what she had experienced. Marybeth built up the courage to drive to the nearest phone booth. She reached down in her coat pocket and pulled out a grocery receipt and loose change. She threw the raincoat hood over her head and ran to the pay phone. She placed the quarter in the slot, picked up the phone, and quickly pressed some numbers. The phone began to ring.

    Yeellow.

A man answered. Marybeth sobbed on the other end of the phone.

Honey? Is that you? Where are you? he asked.

Something weird is happening. I believe I saw an alien or some sort, Marybeth said as she tried to look outside the phone booth.

As Eshe approached a building with the windows boarded up, she shapeshifted back into herself, still wearing Marybeth’s attire. She walked inside the dark building; flames slowly emerged from the flicks of lighters. Eshe looked around and noticed lost souls. She instantly felt a low vibration as she began to cough from the smoke-filled room.

Hey, come here, a voice called to Eshe.

Eshe walked through the smoke-filled room to the man that had called her. She stepped over bodies that were sleeping and zoned out.

You’ll get used to the smell. Is this your first time here? he asked.

    Yes, she said.

    Where are you from?

The Spirit Realm. What’s that you have?

This baby is your ticket back to your home. The smoker placed the glass pipe to his mouth and flicked a lighter. The dark gray smoke filled the glass as he sucked on the pipe. He tilted his head back and exhaled. Thick clouds of smoke rushed out of his nostrils. He closed his eyes, and a menacing smile gradually appeared on his face. He gestured, passing the pipe to Eshe. She took the pipe and looked at the burnt end. She slowly placed the burnt end of the pipe toward her lips.

Turn it around. Here, let me help you, the smoker insisted.

Eshe placed the correct end to her lips, and the smoker flicked the lighter.

A forceful hand slapped the pipe out of Eshe’s hand.

What are you doing? Can’t you see that she’s pregnant?

Eshe looked at the man who had knocked the pipe out of her mouth. She looked into his eyes. She saw greed, love, and loyalty.

Get your things and get out of here, the young man said to the smoker.

The smoker picked up his pipe off the ground, what was left of it.

I never seen a dealer with a conscience, the smoker said while walking out of the building.

The young man slowly turned his head and looked at the smoker. He pulled a handgun out of his waistband and cocked it. He began to walk as he pointed the gun. Eshe got up and grabbed his arm.

He squeezed the trigger—nothing came out. The smoker was alerted by the click. He saw the gun pointed in his direction and fled out of the building.

You need to get out of here. This is not the place for a pregnant woman.

    I have nowhere to go.

The guy looked at Eshe and felt sorry for her.

Do you have any family around these parts?

No, I’m afraid not, she said.

Tez, take her to get a hotel room. You know, the one about three blocks from here. Pay it for a month and make sure she has food.

Tez walked over and escorted Eshe out of the building.

Eshe turned around before leaving the building.

Wait…I’m looking for someone. He fled here, to Earth Realm, six months ago. He is the father to my child, she said while placing her hand on her stomach.

When Eshe’s love left her, she had become distraught. Her love for him was not ordinary. She had been given free will but also been advised not to follow him, as his path led to the destruction of the soul. Eshe disregarded the wise elder and followed her heart. With her unborn child in her sacred womb, she grasped the opportunity to depart the Spirit Realm to mend the pieces of her heart.

Eshe found that the humans on Earth were very complex. She held the power to examine another’s soul by making eye-to-eye contact. Eshe assessed everyone she encountered by looking into the person’s eyes. She often came across genuine humans; however, the path she chose was destined for destruction.

Tez did as he was told: he got Eshe settled in her room with food. He walked over to the counter and grabbed the remote control. He pointed it at the television, and it came on. Eshe was startled by the colors on the box and the vivid images. He came across a video, and Eshe was drawn to the heavenly voice that came out of the box. The voice was a breath of fresh air that filled her soul. Her tone was equivalent to the strums of a harp. Eshe focused on the angel that spoke to her through the box. The lyrics to the song pierced her heart.

Tears slowly began to fall from her eyes as she thought about her love. Eshe quickly caught on to the song and recited the hook. This song was too familiar to her.

Who is this…angel that is talking to me? she asked.

Eshe looked at the name that appeared on the bottom of the screen.

She heard the room door close, and Tez was gone. Eshe walked into the bathroom and cleaned herself up. After a warm shower, she lay on the bed and began to think about the time she met her love.

Eshe walked through the peaceful garden and saw a large crowd gathering to listen to a voice. The voice she heard projected through the open area. She noticed the man who was talking had everyone’s attention. He was passionate in his speech, and the citizens around cheered. Eshe walked closer to the speaker and made eye contact with him. He was struck by Eshe’s goddess beauty, as she stood out from all the other citizens in the crowd. Once his speech was over, he went to introduce himself. Their souls connected. They became best friends and eventually partners as they vowed their love through marriage.

He told Eshe all his ambitious ideas and dreams. He explained to her that he wanted to travel and see all the realms and universes. Eshe cringed every time her love spoke of such things. She knew it was suggested that they never leave the Spirit Realm for their selfish needs. The Wise Council anointed them to be God’s favorite union. Their lives were promised with happiness and love with a child that would be God’s gift to them.

He grew resentful of his stay in the Spirit Realm, which birthed an ego. Eshe saw the frustration that matured in him as the negative energy began to consume him. Her love began to openly disrespect her by trifling with other citizens. His thirst to gain the world disturbed his soul and his marriage. It was too late; Eshe was in love. The elders warned Eshe about her love’s rebellious soul. She knew the day would come that they would no longer be together because he had fed his ego into obesity.

Eshe was suddenly wakened by the loud sound of unwelcomeness as someone intruded into their space. Four men snatched her love out of the bed and dragged him out of the hut. One sentinel unrolled a scroll and began to read him his charges.

You are guilty of conspiring against God and deliberately disobeying the Spirit Realm rules. You seek the worldly ways for egotistical pursuits. You have openly broken your vow to God and your wife. You shall be cast from the Spirit Realm and never return.

Eshe, wrapped in linen, ran toward the guards that were about to cast out her love. The elder grabbed Eshe and held her back from approaching him.

    Wait! I’m with child!

    He looked at Eshe…

The sentries amputated his wings with a large sword. A large portal opened, and they cast him out of the Spirit Realm. The crowd dispersed. Eshe walked over to the large wings that were painted with her love’s blood. She held the wings close to her face and sobbed into the feathers. The wise elder helped her up from the ground and took her inside. Eshe went into a state of depression. Her love had been snatched from her like a thief in the night.

Months passed, and the seed in her body grew. Eshe could no longer bear the pain of being alone, so she decided that she would follow her heart. While the wise elder slept, Eshe crept out of the hut. The sacred portal was guarded by night watchmen. She watched as the men stood guard at the entrance and exit. Another guard approached the two watchmen.

I am here to relieve you for tonight, the watchman said as he approached.

The guard gladly grabbed his belongings and walked off. A trumpet sounded that alerted the guards.

A ring beamed from his finger as the large portal began to activate. One of the watchmen walked to the threshold of the portal.

Hey, you might want to back up. We have several newcomers headed in.

The guard’s wings expanded, and he transformed into Eshe.

Eshe jumped up and looked around the room. The music videos continued to play from the box. Three months had passed, and Eshe’s search for her love was unsuccessful. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl on a stormy night. Eshe cared for her daughter with unconditional love; she gained joy looking into her daughter’s eyes and seeing God’s gift as she was the chosen one. Eshe had not seen a soul so wholesome. The worldly ways were still a weakness to Eshe as she passed by the abandoned building daily on her way to work. She became friends with an elder lady who would care for her daughter while she worked at the grocery store. Miss Evan reminded Eshe of the wise elder from the Spirit Realm.

On this day, Eshe bumped into the smoker as she passed the abandoned building.

He had lost a tremendous amount of weight, his teeth had rotted, and his face reflected death. He was extremely charming as he displayed his courtship, luring Eshe back into the abandoned building, reuniting her with the glass pipe.

I can’t do this. I have to pick up my baby, Eshe said.

Trust me, your baby is in good hands. Take a hit, just one hit, the smoker said as he smiled.

Eshe placed the pipe to her mouth and inhaled…

The dealer gazed from a distance; the cloudy smoke filled the room. He felt no remorse as he earned another fiend. Eshe chose the world and lost her soul. She struggled with drugs for years, and eventually Miss Evan became the caregiver of Eshe’s baby.

    Chapter 2

    THE WISE COUNCIL

Fadez moaned in agony as he heard Queen Dahlia’s voice echoing from the portal. The trimming of the portal gleamed in a mix of purple fire and blue ice. His wounds worsened by the minute.

    Ahhh! Close it! Fadez exclaimed.

The daggers—she has all three now, Blaze said.

No, she doesn’t, Fadez grunted, applying pressure to his sides.

Fadez, we saw her rip the dagger from your leg. Why wouldn’t you tell us you had it on you all this time? This could have been prevented, Blaze said.

Seven walked over to Blaze to try and calm him down. Blaze pushed Seven and stormed out of the room.

I’m getting tired of him, Breeze said as he watched Blaze walk away.

No, let him go. I called Brix before we left Zaina’s house. He told me to protect the Golden Dagger. At the moment I didn’t know what he was talking about. Moments later, Dax strolled in and gave me the Golden Dagger. He said I was worthy to protect it. Before Myles and I entered the portal, I gave Dax back the Golden Dagger along with the keys to the cell house—I guess you can say it was a decoy move. I couldn’t make it too easy for her, Fadez said.

So the dagger is with Dax, Breeze said and smiled.

Doc stood over the chest that secured the Golden Dagger. Below the chest was a large book made from stone tablets. He opened the large top of the chest. Soul, Brix, Dax, and Solei walked over to him, and they all looked inside. The Golden Dagger rested in the middle. On each side of it were empty slots shaped like daggers. Above the dagger was a hole, mysteriously shaped. Doc closed the chest and grabbed his staff.

The Wise Council is gathering; we will discuss the events that took place and the urgency of retrieving the remaining two daggers. I encourage you all to come, to get familiar with each tribe.

I think I’m going to stay in here until it’s time to go back, Soul said.

What worries you, my son? Doc asked.

I’m really not in the mood to be around people that really don’t serve a purpose. I mean, they are up here, and the real fight is on Earth, Soul said.

Brix looked at Soul. He understood what Soul was saying, but he didn’t agree with him. Soul was not really a guy who cared for large crowds. He stayed to himself most of the time. As far as Brix was concerned, any minute Soul would probably leave them and head back on his own. He blinked his eyes and then closed them tight. He stared at Soul as if he saw a disturbing image.

Well, if you decide to join us, you are welcome. Come on—let’s head out, Doc said as he gestured for Brix to grab the heavy chest.

I’ll be right there, Solei said.

She looked at her brother and gave a shake of her head, followed by a sigh.

    What? Soul asked defensively.

You are unbelievable, you. I can’t believe you. Here we are, invited to sit with the Wise Council, and you’re letting your ego get in the way? For once, can it not be about you? Solei asked.

Are you done? They’re probably waiting for you, Soul said, unbothered.

He lay in the bed, clasped his fingers behind his head, and crossed his leg.

You know what? Just forget it, Solei said, pacing out of the room.

Solei entered the large outdoor meeting area. The view was breathtaking, full of large mountains with homes carved along them. Caves and waterfalls blessed the serene rear view. Doc stood up and led her to a seat.

I tried to get him to come, but…

Don’t worry about it. Thank you for trying, Doc said while pushing Solei’s seat in.

The meeting scene was an abode of God. A vast open courtyard with trees that sprouted from the mountains circled the center. In the middle of the courtyard was a stone table, carved from amber, that resembled an autumn sunset. Everyone patiently sat and talked. The Beings were quiet for the most part. They were all in awe of the realm. In the middle of the table was the large chest that secured the Golden Dagger. Servants entered the courtyard with several chalices on silver trays. They smiled and served Solei, Egypt, Brix, and Dax fruits. One servant handed Brix a chalice, and their eyes connected. Brix smiled back and took the chalice. The servant was an Ethiopian goddess; her golden-hued skin complemented the gold bracers and earrings that she wore. Brix continued to stare at her while she walked off. Egypt gently kicked Brix to get his attention.

A man with silver bushy hair cleared his throat and stood up with the help of the staff that he grasped in his left hand. He wore a long white robe, and his appearance demanded attention as everyone turned and focused on him.

Thank you all for gathering with us today. It seems we have a common goal that can be achieved with the proper guidance. The Soul Seekers have obtained two of the three precious jewels. Thank you to the dagger bearer and his comrades, as they were able to secure one of the daggers, the man said.

The elders that sat at the table began to softly applaud as they acknowledged Dax. The man in the white robe sat down and began to introduce the elders to the Beings.

Here we have Mesi, leader of the Maeji Tribe. Delu, leader of the Dunzia Tribe. Akachi, leader of the Motoa Tribe. Chike, leader of the Hewia Tribe. Tau, leader of the Mnyamia Tribe. Nuru, leader of the Jusa Tribe. Doc, leader of the Viumbe Wakuu Tribe. I am Obasi, in God’s honor, spokesman for the Wise Council, he said.

A large albino lion entered the courtyard. The lion opened his mouth in an intimidating yawn.

Nangwaya, come, my boy, Tau said.

The lion headed toward Tau and stopped; he sniffed the ground until he approached Egypt. Nangwaya moved closer to Egypt and brushed his head against her side. Egypt slowly rubbed the lion’s back, soothing him.

He has never acted in this manner, not even to me, Tau said.

Egypt has always had a way with animals, Doc chimed in.

    Obasi looked around…

    Someone is missing, he said.

The Spirit Realm was beautiful, covering the size of all oceans on earth. Pink Himalayan Mountains stood firm from a distance. The air was purified and strengthened the immune system with each inhale. The still moments calmed the wind as it brushed through the tree branches. Citizens walked unbothered, and children played in the grass fields with no worries of the day. Their garments evinced comfort—men wore agbada robes with loose-fitting pants, and the women wore caftans that draped to their ankles. The vibrant colors bounced off their garments when the sun reflected. A spirit walked to a stream that was produced by a large waterfall. The spirit walked in the shallow water; crystals gleamed from the surface to the top of the clear water. Its hand entered the cold water and retrieved the crystals, and the stones transitioned to an indigo hue in his palm. The spirit immediately vanished…

Wake up, Soul, wake up, Solei said.

Soul opened his eyes and gasped…

You did it again, Solei said.

No, I just took a nap. Jumping portals and dimensions can be draining, Soul said while sitting up off the bed.

They are requesting that you join us, Solei said.

Okay, give me a second. I’ll be right there, Soul said.

Solei walked out of the room. Soul looked at his feet and noticed they were wet. He opened his hand and looked at the blue crystals that shone in his palm. Solei peeked at him through the half-opened door. He placed the crystals in a small bag and stuffed the bag in his pocket. He then placed his blue beanie on his head and headed out of the room.

The leaders of the tribes were arguing and speaking over one another—the council was not going as planned. Soul and Solei heard the noise from the hall.

Now you see why I didn’t want to join this little therapy session, Soul said as he and his sister entered the room.

Nangwaya’s head lifted off the floor. He looked at Soul and let out a thunderous roar. Soul stopped in his tracks, startled by the large beast. Nangwaya continued to move toward Soul. Soul’s spirit
