About the Author
Preface
For centuries, the question has been asked do we really know everything there is to know about this world. Explorers have searched from the depths of the ocean to the heights of distant planets looking for the answer. Strangely, there are questions we face daily that need to be answered too. For example, do you truly know who is standing next to you? Or where they came from? The questions and answers may seem simple, but don’t let them fool you. Dig a little deeper and you may be surprised by the mysteries you uncover. Laylah, along with her friends, attempted to answer one of these life questions. But little did she know, it would send her on a journey that would turn her life upside down and destroy everything she knew to be true.
Introduction
Fairytales are supposed to be cheerful, aren’t they? This fairytale is a bit different. Dare to take a venture to Fae Lake. It looks like any ordinary lake. In the heat of the day, the animals run and leap among the trees surrounding it. They nibble on flowers while listening to the soft sound of water crashing into the bluff. The large bluff overhangs high above the lake, overlooking the point where the water gently flows down through a creek to the nearby town. Most days it is very peaceful. Most days. But occasionally, the peaceful lake is disturbed by a violent storm. These are no average storms. Something mysterious happens to the lake every time one of these storms occurs. Thick dense clouds cover the sun and turbulent winds disturb the water’s surface. The sky turns dark and grey except for the terrible flashes of lightning. Even the waves on the lake flow forcefully, crashing violently into the side of the bluff. Heavy winds make it difficult for the birds. They struggle to fly up and down, flapping their wings as hard as they can. Then suddenly…they are gone. They disappear into thin air. Not only are are the birds missing, but all the other animals too. Several children visited the lake trying to solve the mystery. Now they are missing!
Laylah and her friends decided they would uncover the truth. Unknown to them, they stumbled blindly into the lake’s trap. They had no idea what was lurking in the dark waters or that it had been watching them. It was waiting for them to come see the swirling waters. Waiting for them to come just a little closer. But don’t come too soon. No! Wait and come see what the mystic lake has in store, hidden during the deep darkness of an eclipse.

Chapter One
Thirteen Candles
Laylah Manchester stood anxiously looking at the flickering flames. There are finally thirteen of them, she thought to herself. I am no longer a child but a young woman. A large smirk consumed her face, and her cheeks turned bright red. She continued to watch the flames dance back and forth while listening to the awkward sound of music. Her friends and parents were singing Happy Birthday. She glanced at them but was drawn back to those alluring pink candles. She tried to get Cody’s attention without her mother noticing. He promised to give her a special gift, and she was eager to see what it was. She smiled at him while rubbing her finger across her bottom lip. Instinctively, he looked across the table at her as she winked at him and blew out the candles.
Laylah, are you alright sweetheart?
her mother asked, looking at her oddly.
Yes, Mom. I’m fine.
Cut the cake, Lay!
said her friends, who were sitting
on the edges of their seats, waiting to get a slice.
I love strawberry cake. Your mom is an amazing cook!
said Nya.
The sweet scent of vanilla and strawberry from the cake filled the air. It had two layers. The bottom was strawberry, Nya's favorite. The top layer was a white chocolate chip. Laylah loved anything chocolate. Her mother made the cake using the two flavors they loved most. It was covered with whipped buttercream icing and had pink roses around the sides. Happy Birthday Lay
was written on it, and it was topped with those beautiful candles. Why are they beautiful? Laylah smiled again, thinking to herself. They are beautiful because there are finally thirteen of them. After they finished eating, the kids went outside to light fireworks.
Remember, Laylah…
her father warned as they ran out the door past him.
Remember what?
asked Cody. He took an old gym bag off his bike. Laylah’s eyes followed his butt as he bent over. She never had a boyfriend before. He was her first. She stood there looking at him and thinking how perfect the day was.
Lay… remember what?
Cody asked again.
My dad doesn’t want me to go near the creek without him.
That’s strange,
said Johnathan, lighting the first spinner. Nya saw it circling on the ground, but she
