    Good job, everyone. The trolls are dead, you saved the halfling village, and found a chest filled with jewels. Let’s take a break before we sort out experience points.

    Kaden jiggled his leg, oddly unsatisfied with the successful conclusion of the battle, and wiped at his forehead. When had it gotten so stupidly hot in here?

    Aren’t basements supposed to be cold? Kaden plucked at his favorite tank top - pale blue with a glittery unicorn head decal—which he’d paired with bright blue basketball shorts. He couldn’t have worn any less, unless he were to strip down to nothing, which his Dungeons & Dragons friends wouldn’t appreciate.

    Ella adjusted her thick fleece sweatshirt. It’s not any hotter than it was last week. Were you spawned from an iceberg? You’re never cold in winter and you hibernate indoors in summer. One day, you’ll melt away, like the polar ice caps.

    Kaden snorted. He and Ella had been best friends since junior high. She’d smelled so good, and they clicked instantly. Everyone assumed it was puppy love until he’d come out as gay a few years later.

    Their only real disagreements were over temperature, but Ella had long ago conceded it was easier for her to bundle up than it was for Kaden to strip down enough to be comfortable.

    It wasn’t Kaden’s fault. Werewolf blood ran hotter than human. Since Ella was human, she’d no idea that was the real reason. She just assumed Kaden had a super-charged metabolism. Which was certainly supported by the amount of food he could eat and not gain weight.
