Vendunari: Grenig's War

This story is set before and during the Gene War and follows Grenig's journey to become Vendunari. The story contains spoilers for Vendunari - Gene War. Its advised to read Gene War first.

Grenig is a Pembian genetic warrior genetically boosted and highly trained to be an efficient remorseless killing machine for the Entari. That was until he touched the green Nari and it entered his mind. Grenig has seen the truth about the Entari and he doesn't want to fight in the war anymore. His new mission is to save his people. Will the Nari let him or will it lead him to his death.

Grenig stood behind the Brood Mother clinging to her leg unwilling to let go.

I don’t want to leave the nursery, he squeaked as he looked fearfully towards the large metal gates at the front of the warrior academy.

The Brood Mother reached down and peeled his fingers from her legs one by one carefully yet firmly. She pulled him around to stand in front of her and knelt so they were face to face.

We have already spoken about this Grenig. You are of age now. It’s time for you to follow the path set out for you just like all the others, she said with a well-practiced motherly smile.

But I want to be an explorer not a warrior, argued Grenig, I want to see the galaxy and everything in it.

We are not ready to explore the galaxy on our own yet, replied the Brood Mother patiently.

Why not? asked Grenig.

Because it is too dangerous. Not every civilization is so benevolent as the Entari. They protect us and we must follow their guidance until we are ready to survive on our own again.

But I don’t like to fight, I like to explore, argued Grenig.

You should be proud to be selected as a warrior little one, very few Dehg are chosen to receive that high honour. Your genetic code must be extraordinary.

This did not impress Grenig and he looked ready to argue again so she changed tack.

You know, if you excel in your training you might be sent to one of the Entari colony worlds. They are vital to expanding the Protectorate and they are often wild places that need to be tamed.

Really? asked Grenig excitedly, having never considered that before.

Yes, it is possible. If you are a good and brave warrior, replied the Brood Mother, Now go inside with the others.

With thoughts of going to another world at the forefront of his mind Grenig suddenly found the academy looked somewhat more inviting than it had just a few moments before. He began to march through the front gates. Just a few steps inside he stopped suddenly and turned back to face the Brood Mother.

Will I see you again Brood Mother? he asked his voice suddenly fearful again.

You don’t need a Brood Mother anymore little one. But worry not. You have a new family now. Go and join your new brothers and sisters, she said as she turned rapidly away and stepped back onto the transport that they had arrived in.

Grenig stood and watched the transport race into the air and disappear, then he slowly walked along the main path to a huge hall. He stepped inside and was immediately greeted by a cavernous open space.

There was no furniture so the hundreds of broodlings like himself were sitting directly on the hard stone floor. The hall was already almost full and Grenig was one of the last to enter, so he sat at the very back of the crowd in the first free space that he came across.

Grenig had never seen this many other Pembians in one place at one time and he looked around the chamber in wonderment. The boy sitting beside him tapped him on the shoulder to get his
