After honorable discharge after more than 10 years in the South African Defence Force, I took up the post of Managing Director of a Non-Government Organization, established to uplift impoverished communities in and around Potchefstroom, while also appointed as a part-time lecturer of undergraduates (specifically on leadership). Three years later I was appointed as Rector, managing an Educational Institute with 4000 students spread over 36 African countries. While in this position I had the opportunity to lecture extensively abroad and published various articles on leadership; with specific emphasis on motivation and group dynamics. I am a strong believer in utilizing a blended and integrated approach in all of the training (including the new material which I developed) I developed which included – Leadership (within a Faith based community), andragogy, and Cultural Diversity management. Teaching Ministry - Carl Davis
Chapter One
A Teaching Ministry: Introduction
Many new and experienced pastors have trouble with the idea of catechesis or a teaching ministry.
To begin with, it is not easy to decide what catechesis is.
Secondly, there are many different answers to the question of who should be taught, what they should be taught, and who should do the teaching.
Once that problem has been solved, the next question to be answered is how this teaching should be done. Do you set up a school with teachers like government schools, or is there a way that is distinctive of and exclusive to a Christian teaching ministry?
We will try to deal with as many of these questions as possible in the next few Chapters.
To begin with, we will look at teaching as an essential characteristic of the Church.
Teaching as Essential Characteristic of the Church
The Church as Instrument of Salvation
We can define the Church in the following way, the Church is:
All those who have been chosen and set aside by God the Father
To be gathered as a new community in the Name of Jesus Christ
In faithful response to his personal call,
In absolute obedience to their one Lord, Jesus Christ,
Who are cleansed of their sins by the blood of Christ.
And who are sealed, guided, and kept by the Holy Spirit.
From this broad definition of the Church, we could go on and state the following:
Every Church is always the Church of Jesus Christ: it does not serve itself or exist for its own purposes.
It exists only by the grace of Christ, based on his atoning work and subsequent calling.
It is also ruled by only one king - Jesus Christ and serves only Him and his purposes.
His purposes can be summarized under The Kingdom of God.
This term refers not to a place but to God's actual dominion or his effective exercise of authority and its recognition by people who serve God.
God's kingdom exists where people accept God's authority and consciously subject themselves to Him through the Holy Spirit, based on Christ's saving work.
This kingdom is the objective of all Christ's work: He wants to bring people into this sphere of God's rulership by reconciling them to God and calling them to obedience to God's Word.
To this end, Christ sends out his servants to bring people into contact with the Word of God, primarily through preaching it (Matthew
