    Wiser With You

    Amongst his brothers, Fabien is the only one who could remember their father.  But even his fleeting memories are few and foggy. 

    The memory he could remember clearest was their parents dancing around the dining room.  Their mother smiled so brightly as their father exuded a calm and comforting aura.  She was wearing a blue dress, stitched by Ms Charlotte, and he was in his armour.  When they finished dancing, their father turned to him with his gentle smile and crouched before him.

    You be a good boy and take care of your mother, all right?

    Since then, Fabien never saw their father again, and their mother never smiled as brightly.  She only seemed to weep, get angry, or show no emotion at all.  Fabien remembered trying to cook eggs when she was too tired to get up but burnt them.  When she came down and saw the mess, she yelled to the point his ears were ringing.

    He wasn’t sure when their mother got better.  But eventually the shouting and crying stopped.  It didn’t mean that life got easier.

    Since the burnt egg debacle, Fabien focused more on trying to look after his brothers.  Which wasn’t as easy as he had believed.

    Doriaux, who is nine years younger than him, was simpler to handle.  He fussed every so now and then but went quiet quickly after Fabien gave him a bit of attention.  Normally his old blanket, stitched by Ms Charlotte, was enough to keep him calm.

    Claudel, on the other hand, was a nightmare.  He cried a lot.  Fabien would try again and again to calm the youngest brother, but nothing worked.  And more often than not, Doriaux would start wailing along with his brother.  They were only three years apart and it felt like they were teaming up against him.

    A lot of the time, their mother would come in to calm everyone down.  Fabien remembered the
