Marly's Million Dollar Coat Hanger - William Medina
It’s Happening Again
It is a sunny Friday afternoon with a gentle cool breeze in the air. The playground at Middle Side Elementary is full of children, burning off playful excess energy. They are yelling, running, jumping and having as much fun as they can.
The question is. Will it happen again? Like it happened yesterday, and the day before that. It seems to start and end in the same way. Groups of Mrs. Griffin’s third grade students are huddled together arguing with each other. It is a chaotic and extremely angry scene. Their voices carry across the playground disrupting the entire school during recess.
Today is no different.
Jenny is sitting with Sally at the far end of the playground near the small frog shaped seesaw set. She often spends recess telling Sally all about this idea she and her mom are working on. An idea for a toy they are making together for her baby sister.
Did you and your Mom talk? About your idea.
Asked Sally wanting to know more.
I sat down with her for only a few minutes – but we did talk.
Jenny grabbed the sleeve of her shirt. It’s been really hard trying to figure all this out.
I talked to my mom last night. She said she will be the first to buy one – when you get it!.
Said Sally proudly smiling.
Jenny has been talking about this idea for two months. However, lately her and Sally have been doing it in secret.
Are you talking about it again?
Said Anna. Tell us again about your amazing idea.
She stood there with her arms crossed in front of her. You know – it will never work.
Anna and her friends spent much of their time thinking of ways to convince Jenny that her idea, that her dream was impossible. She had most of the girls and some of the boys believing Jenny was crazy. You have to be crazy to think that people would want to buy a toy made by a nine-year-old. Especially one made by Jenny.
What are you - special?
Anna kicked up some of the mulch.
Anna is right! You are only a kid. You can't do that; stupid!
Said Anna’s best friend Mylee.
Shut up Mylee!
Sally screamed. Don’t talk to her like that.
Her hands closed tightly into a fist. She knew that the last time she hit Mylee she was sent home for an entire day. Her parents told her if she did it again, next time she’d be grounded for a month.
My mom says kids can do anything they want.
Shouted Becky who had now come over to stand against Anna with Sally.
What does your mom know, my dad is a doctor! He went to a big expensive school ...
Anna paused trying to catch her breath. He knows more than your mom!
Sally was now standing over Jenny covering her like a human shield. She was trying to keep her safe. That is what friends do. Friends protect each other and Sally was the best kind of friend you could have.
One by one some of the other students joined in. One side saying that Jenny’s idea is dumb, impossible or a waste
