Isra’ and Mi’raj: The Miraculous Night Journey of the Chosen One

Isra' and Mi'raj are one of the significant and majestic historical events in the journey of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is a journey that is extremely distant and challenging to describe, and the capacity of the human mind to comprehend its explanation is limited. Nevertheless, it is indeed a real event experienced by the Prophet Muhammad.

The story of the Isra' and Mi'raj journey is elucidated by Allah in two different surahs in the Quran. The Isra' journey (the night journey) is mentioned in Surah Al-Isra' (17:1).

Glory be to Allah, who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

Meanwhile, the story of the Mi'raj (ascension to the heavens) is mentioned by Allah in Surah Al-Najm (53:13-18).

And indeed, Muhammad saw Jibril[1] in his true form on another occasion, (13) which was at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary. (14) Near it is the Garden of Refuge. (15) When the Lote Tree was covered with what covered it, (16) Muhammad's eyes did not swerve, nor did they transgress. (17) Indeed, he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. (18).

The separate mention of the stories of Isra' and Mi'raj by Allah seems to signal that these two forms of travel have distinct purposes, even though their substance is the same – to show the Prophet Muhammad signs of the greatness of Allah, both in the heavens and on earth. The difference in the locations of the mention of these two events in different surahs by Allah indicates that these two journeys are two distinct miracles. If Isra' is a journey that is a miracle beyond the capability of any inhabitant of the earth, then Mi'raj is an extraordinary journey and a miracle that even the inhabitants of the heavens cannot perform. It is mentioned that Jibril could only accompany Prophet Muhammad until the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, while the subsequent journey only Prophet Muhammad could undertake, to meet directly with God in a place known only to Allah and the Prophet.
