Fall From Grace
About the Author
Fall From Grace
Pasadena, California – 1999
He cleared the very top of the six-foot concrete wall and hit the ground running. Kian Lewis knew that he would ultimately pay for this whole mistake of a mess but not tonight if he could help it. He ran down the length of the alley, training his ears to pick up any sound of the police officers giving chase. He was tired, his legs screamed for mercy, but still, he ran for his freedom.
Kian rounded the corner at the end of the alley and stopped short, sucking in huge gulps of air as he leaned against a wall. Alyssa was dead – she shouldn’t be, but she was, and he was to blame. If only he hadn’t let her try that new stuff from his stash, his girlfriend wouldn’t be lying on a paramedic gurney, dead from an overdose, while he hid from the cops. He was 15 years old, a fugitive career delinquent, and he was terrified.
As he pushed himself away from the wall to keep moving, he heard a car, a police cruiser no doubt, coming slowly down the alley. He took off at great speed, only to be blocked in by another police car coming around the corner at the intersection. The lights came on abruptly, and the siren chirped. The last words Kian heard as a free man was, Get your damn hands up!
The gavel slammed down, and the judge gave him a hard look. I’m fucked. My life as a teen is officially over. Kian lowered his gaze, rubbing his face with both hands. He had been sentenced, rather harshly in his opinion, to a juvenile detention center in Las Vegas until he was twenty one. No more parties, no more beers in the sun with Alyssa and his buddies, and no more freedom. Six years wasn’t forever, but he believed all of his best days were behind him.
Two police officers grabbed him up from his chair and escorted him from the courtroom. As they traveled the length of the hallway to a detention room, one police officer snickered.
I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time, Lewis. For the last two years, you’ve been doing dirt, thinking you were untouchable. This isn’t a movie, kid. Maybe one day you’ll be worth something, but right now, you need to be locked up, you little punk.
Shame about the girlfriend,
the other officer said in a low voice. She’ll never be at her prom, but you won’t either.
They reached the detention room with the cold white walls, and dreary fluorescent lights and Kian took a seat. The officers didn’t say another word to him as they left, locking the door. He could see one of them standing guard outside the door. He was pretty reckless but knew there was zero chance of escape from this hell. Maybe this is exactly where I need to be. Alyssa is dead, and it’s my fault. My fault.
Las Vegas, Nevada – 2005
It was lights out time in his cell, which was really a tiny room with one window, but Kian didn’t feel like sleeping. He lay on his back on his bunk, staring out the window at the full moon, which gave his small space a mystical glow. He wore his orange jumpsuit for the last time. Tomorrow, he would be a free man. Man is the keyword. Kian smiled sadly. I sacrificed my teen years, so many years, for bullshit.
He had spent the last six years of his life in secure confinement
