D ammit ! Katie exclaimed . The net was stuck on something and that meant either pulling harder, or wading into the water. If she damaged the net, it meant three- hour drive into town... And spending money to replace the net... And having to deal with people and crowds, which always made her feel anxious and claustrophobic.

I’ll rather take the icy water Katie thought wryly.

It was a warm late afternoon and the sun turned the lake a beautiful shade of orange.

Sighing, Katie began wading into the water carefully. Luckily it seemed the net was just tangled in some branches and she quickly untangled and net and hauled it to the shore.  Only five foot two, she was more than capable of taking care of herself. She had after all, been living alone, out in the wilderness, for years now. For the first time in her life, she felt home.

Living alone in the wilderness was hard work, but the solitude and calm was so soothing to her soul, she didn’t even consider the thought of going back to the city.

Dinner! she thought, feeling victorious. Two plump trout were caught in her net.

Something else was in her net, and her eye caught a glint of tarnished metal....It was an old, dirty brass looking lamp in a Middle Eastern style.  She’d look more closely at it later, now she had to gut the trout.

As she headed back to her cabin, admiring the beautiful sunset, she was thankful for her beautiful surroundings, and the peace of her existence, but a small part of her also longed for connection and companionship.

Her backpack secure on her shoulders,  and her trusty hunting rifle at hand, Katie quickly made her way home.  She had to be careful – wolves, bears and cougars roamed the woods, and she had tangled with them on occasion. Mostly if you let them alone, they left you alone. Katie couldn’t understand why people weren’t like that.

And soon she reached her little cabin, amongst the thick trees. Her home was rustic, but comfortable, and most importantly, it was hers.
