#3 In the 1990s, life in Russia was cheap, and corruption was widespread at every level of government. Trush made busts involving high-ranking police officers and members of parliament, and these were dangerous enemies for him to have.

#4 Trush’s team drove through the snowbound village of Yasenovie, and then east towards Sobolonye. They crossed a wide and improbably located gravel highway that had been conceived during Soviet times as an alternative to Primorye’s only north-south throughway.

    #2

The tiger’s whiskers are believed to make them bulletproof, and its powdered bones will soothe their aches and pains. Its penis will make them virile, and there are many who will pay thousands of dollars for a tiger’s skin.

    #3

In the 1990s, life in Russia was cheap, and corruption was widespread at every level of government. Trush made busts involving high-ranking police officers and members of parliament, and these were dangerous enemies for him to have.

    #4

Trush’s team drove through the snowbound village of Yasenovie, and then east towards Sobolonye. They crossed a wide and improbably located gravel highway that had been conceived during Soviet times as an alternative to Primorye’s only north-south throughway.

    #5

Trush went to visit Markov, a friend of his who kept bees, and was greeted by crows guarding a dead animal. It was clear that something big had died, or was dying, and was being guarded.

    #6

Trush followed the tracks up the entrance road, and then into the forest. He found the remains of Vladimir Ilyich Markov, and filmed them. His hunting dog, a little Laika, was the only one who felt the tiger was still up ahead.

    #7

The men were so overwhelmed by the wreckage before them that it was hard to distinguish imminent danger from the present horror. The tiger’s latest communication served not only to undo these men still further, but to deepen the invisible chasm between them and the officials on whom their liberty and safety now depended.

    #8

Trush was leading the group, and he was the only one with a gun. The others were unarmed, and the tiger could attack at any moment. Trush was extremely vulnerable, as he was exploring this dreadful reality through the camera’s narrow, cyclopean lens.

    #9

Trush was a police inspector who was sent to investigate an attack. He decided to track the tiger, which had not been part of the plan. He knew that every step would take him deeper into the tiger’s comfort zone.

    #10

The Russians have had a difficult time understanding the tiger population in Russia, as the country is so heavy-handed, damaged, and cold.

    #11
