    Chapter 7: Cultivation Techniques

    Two Techniques for Growing Mushrooms

The two primary techniques for mushroom growing are highlighted in the following sentences. The methods are: First, Paddy Straw 2, on Wood Log.

    Method #1:

Paddy Straw Mushroom—Volvariella volvacea (Bull. ex. Fr) (Bull. ex. Fr.)The processes of spawn preparation, mushroom bed preparation, spawning and watering, mushroom crop production, and mushroom harvesting make up sang cultivation.

    i. Preparation of Spawn: Simply said, mushroom spawn is a medium that has been infused with mushroom mycelium and is used as the seed or inoculum for mushroom growing. It is actually a fibrous mass of mycelium growing on dead organic matter. Either the tissue culture approach or pure culture from spores derived from the targeted mushroom fruit body may be used to produce spawn. From beginning to end, the spawn preparation procedure should be aseptic.

Spawn may be grain spawn or straw spawn. Rye, sorghum, or wheat grains are cooked in water and sterilized in an autoclave for 30 minutes to make grain spawn. Pure cultures of the desired mushrooms are then added as an inoculant, and the mixture is then incubated at the appropriate temperature. The spawn is ready for use once the mycelium has covered the entire surface of the grain.

When making straw spawn, paddy or wheat straw should be cut into manageable pieces, soaked in water for 5 to 10 minutes, mixed with 2% lime, and then prepared as with grain spawn. Glass vials are typically used for spawn preparation.

ii. Making the Mushroom Bed: First, make a frame out of bamboo or wood that is the right size, say about 1 square meter. Then construct paddy straw bundles from un-crumpled paddy straw that is not more than one year old from which leafy material has been removed. Each bundle of straw weighing roughly 1 kg should be fastened at both ends with strings.

Clip off unequal sections of straw at both ends of each bundle. For 18 to 24 hours, submerge 8 of these bundles under water in a tank. The initial layer of the mushroom bed is created by spreading them out on the previously prepared frame after removing them from the tank.

iii. Spawning of the Mushroom Bed: Spawning refers to the act of scattering spawn over the components of the mushroom bed. Remove the prepared spawn from the glass vials in which it was kept.Crush and crumble it with your fingers to make it into small pieces. Spawning should be done on the first layer of straw bundles by broadcasting, retaining around 4 to 6 inches of margin all around the bed un-spawned. The spawning area should now be covered with gram or pigeon pea powder.

The initial layer of straw has now been treated. The right temperature and humidity should be maintained during the spawning time. Never let the surfaces of the bed dry out. As the spawn grows, it releases heat, which contributes to the water loss. Sprinkle some water on the mushroom bed. To ensure that the spawn is properly aerated, prepare a second layer of 8 straw bundles as described above and place them on top of the first layer.

Similar to how the first layer was handled, the second layer needs to be spawned and treated with gram or pigeon pea powder. All told, a mushroom bed made of four layers of straw needs to be set up in a frame using the exact same method, with the straw bundles stacked crosswise. All the 3 layers of straw should be spawned and treated with gram or pigeon pea powder in the same manner.

However, neither gram nor pigeon pea powder should be used to spawn or cure the fourth layer. The third layer needs to be carefully pushed down and then fastened with a rope. Then, make sure a polythene or plastic sheet is laid over the mushroom bed without touching the straw bundles.

iv. Watering the Mushroom Bed: To maintain a temperature range between 35° and 40°G and moisture ideal for the growth of mushroom fruit bodies, the mushroom bed should be watered once or twice daily.

    v. Mushroom Crop Production: Within 10 to 15 days of spawning, little mushroom buttons (primordia of fruit bodies) will begin to develop. To get a harvest of mushrooms, however, will take 4 to 6 weeks. Mushrooms appear in regular cycles
