      It was a poorly kept secret as to why there were nearly no sellers of mead in the Northern Strait. At one point, many had attempted it, believing the convenience would translate to fair profits considering the desire for artisanal liquor. Artisanal, yes, that had been the world’s fixation since the end of the Season of Skirmish. War brings a willingness to settle for substitutes. Yet being adorned by peacetime feels no warmer than in the enjoyment of fanciful clothes and slothful afternoons and - of course - the warmth of honey brew. Still, those who had attempted to - so to speak - bring the brew back home would be the first to tell you that truths were cold. And the truth of the matter was that there was no reason to buy mead if the mead was not from Valen. The mead sold there was so velvet, so golden, so beyond compare that many would rather live without it than settle for a poor substitute.

      There was discord behind me as one of the shopkeepers waved his hands, telling the rest of the customers that he was closing for the day. They yelled in protest, and he yelled back in self-righteous indignation. He had power over them. He knew they would return tomorrow to try again. He had the mead, after all.
