She sat at the top of the stairs,
Remembering what it was like growing up,
Listening to her parents talking below,
Their soft voices casting a spell in the house—
Keeping the dark at bay.
When the day was not good,
A bad test grade, a friend with a snarky comment,
The boy she liked looking the other way as she walked by,
She could always count on her parents and her dogs,
To welcome her home with hugs and kisses,
Healing the day’s hurts away.
The stairs were a refuge.
As she ran up and down
They were sometimes a comfortable seat to think,
A place of warm conversations late at night,
Of sitting and reading while the music soared through the house,
