CHAPTER 1
WHAT WE BELIEVED TO BE OUR DESIRES
The Isolation That Comes with Living in a Personalized World
Even though they can only concentrate their vision approximately eight to twelve inches away, newborns often spend the first hour or so of their lives in a stage doctors call quiet alert.
After a normal birth, after the initial few startled cries, newborn infants typically spend an hour or so in this stage. They are looking for something, guided by an instinct more profound than intention. They are looking for a face, and when they discover one — particularly one that looks back at them — they fixate their eyes on it, having found what they were most urgently looking for. They are looking for a face.
Learning to recognize things is the primary objective of infanthood. Feeding, crying, and even sleeping is only the support system for this most critical task of figuring out who we are and where we are. This work is accomplished by making contact with other people, seeing how they view us, and gradually beginning to create our sense of self through their eyes.
While we were nursing, our gaze tracked down another set of eyes and clung to them. When we were given over to a father or a grandmother or an aunt or a cousin, we found their faces as well, and over time, we were able to distinguish one person from another based on their appearance gradually.
We looked at them with the unwavering focus of a newborn, and because we were a baby — so very weak and so very powerless to cause damage, with those marvelously huge eyes and that incredibly soft skin — they looked back at us with the same unwavering attention, uninhibited and fearless. This was because we were a baby.
If something like this hadn't occurred to you, just like it did to me, there is a good chance that you would not be sitting here reading these words right now. This was established by the developmental psychologist Edward Tronick in an experiment dubbed still face,
which has been widely duplicated. In this experiment, infants and toddlers sit across from their caregivers, who have been instructed to avoid making facial expressions or responding to their children in any way. The recordings of these tests, which only last a few minutes, are complicated to watch since the adults act as if they are unaware that the children are present. In contrast, the children display increasing levels of dysregulation, writhing in frustration and eventually falling in distress. The adults also act as if they do not notice that the children are present. That happens when you deprive yourself of even a little bit of time. Children can live when deprived of this form of acknowledgment and reciprocal attention for months or years but do not thrive in this environment.
Some children are born into this world with a terrible and unexplained deficit in their brain development that prevents them from being recognized. James, the son of my friends Peter and Ellie, had a life supported by love for the six years he was alive; nevertheless, James could not name it, see it, or return it. It did not appear he was aware of or needed a parent's gaze.
THEN, ON THE SEVENTH birthday of James, without any prior notice, he looked directly at his mother and murmured with a slow, stuttering effort, Mommy,
then once again, Mommy,
then over and over with increasing confidence and happiness, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy.
James is now eight years old.
Ellie tried to avoid using her smartphone around James as much as possible. Still, on this particular day, she held it and felt compelled to begin recording her son's conversation out of maternal instinct. It brought both of us to tears when Peter played it for me.
Even though not all of these early moments of recognition are as remarkable as others, a portion of us remembers them all. Because he needed to nurse, our firstborn child would wake up in the middle of the night throughout the first few months of his life. After eating, I would take him for a stroll along
