Lenten Reflections - Michael Stowe
Day 1 - Ash Wednesday- Renewal through Reflection
Scripture Passage:
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. - Psalm 51:10 (ESV)
Reflection
On this Ash Wednesday, as we begin our Lenten journey, we are reminded of the universal human longing for renewal through Psalm 51:10: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
The ashes we receive on our foreheads today symbolize our humble recognition of the need for a spiritual reorientation. We acknowledge our imperfections and deep desire for God to cleanse our hearts and renew our spirits. It is a profound act of surrender and an invitation for God's transformative work to take place within us.
As we enter this season of Lent, let us take a moment to examine the condition of our hearts. Have we allowed clutter and distractions to accumulate, hindering the fullness of God's presence in our lives? Are there areas where we need to seek forgiveness or extend forgiveness to others? How can we cultivate a righteous spirit that aligns with God's will, characterized by love, humility, and compassion?
During these 40 days of Lent, may we open our hearts to God's purifying touch. Let us embrace this season of reflection, repentance, and renewal with a spirit of humility and expectancy, trusting that God can create clean hearts in us and renew the right spirits within us.
Reflection Questions
1. In what areas of your life do you feel the need for renewal and a clean heart?
2. How can acknowledging imperfections and seeking renewal contribute to your spiritual journey?
3. What does it mean for you to cultivate a right spirit in alignment with God's will?
4. In what ways can this season of Lent serve as a fresh start for your spiritual life?
Prayer
Gracious God, as we begin this sacred season, we humbly come before You, acknowledging our need for renewal. Create in us clean hearts and the right spirits. We surrender our imperfections to Your transformative grace. May this Lenten journey be a time of deep reflection and inner renewal. Amen.
Action Steps
› Attend an Ash Wednesday service or create a personal reflection moment, acknowledging areas needing renewal.
› Extend an act of kindness or forgiveness today, aligning your actions with the spirit of renewal and reconciliation.
Day 2- Embracing the Inward Journey of Reflection
Scripture Passage:
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! - Psalm 13923 (ESV)
Reflection
Today, we reflect on an inward journey of reflection, guided by the scripture passage from Psalm 139:23: Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!
This inward journey invites God to search our hearts and minds, to know us most deeply and intimately. It is a plea for divine examination, a desire for God to see us as we are, without pretense or masks. It requires us to be open, vulnerable, and willing to let God work in our lives, transforming us from the inside out.
The journey of reflection is not always easy. It may lead us to confront uncomfortable truths about ourselves, to acknowledge our flaws, and to let go of old habits and thought patterns. However, it is worth taking because it leads to greater self-awareness and a closer relationship with God.
As we continue on this Lenten path, let us reflect on the depth of our openness to God's searching gaze. Are we willing to share our innermost thoughts, desires, and fears with Him? Are we ready to embrace the light and shadow within us without judgment or condemnation? This journey of reflection is an ongoing process that invites God's love and grace to heal and transform us.
Reflection Questions
How comfortable are you with being vulnerable and transparent in your relationship with God?
What aspects of your thoughts and feelings are challenging to share with God? Why?
Prayer
Loving God, we surrender our innermost thoughts and feelings as we open ourselves to Your searching gaze. Illuminate the hidden corners of our hearts and minds. May this ongoing journey of reflection lead to greater self-awareness and a deepened connection with You. Amen.
Action Steps
› Spend intentional time in silent reflection, allowing God to reveal insights about your thoughts and emotions.
› Journal your reflections on the day, noting moments of gratitude, challenges, and areas for personal growth.
› Engage in a brief mindfulness exercise, focusing on the present moment and being attentive to your inner thoughts and feelings.
Day 3 – Rejoicing through Repentance
Scripture Passage:
For the joy of the Lord is your strength. - Nehemiah 8:10 (ESV)
Reflection
On this day of our Lenten journey, we explore the theme of Rejoicing through Repentance,
guided by the scripture passage from Nehemiah 8:10: For the joy of the Lord is your strength.
Repentance is often associated with solemnity and reflection on our shortcomings. However, Nehemiah's words remind us of a unique aspect of repentance—joy. The joy of the Lord is not only a source of comfort but also a wellspring of strength. It is through repentance that we tap into this profound and sustaining joy.
Repentance, when understood in its truest sense, becomes a cause for celebration. It is acknowledging our faults, turning away from them, and turning towards the One who provides unending joy and strength. In this act of turning, we find forgiveness and a deep and lasting joy that sustains us on our spiritual journey.
As we embrace the season of Lent, let us find joy in repentance. It is not merely a somber reflection on our shortcomings but a joyful return to the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father. Through repentance, we draw closer to God, experience His boundless grace, and discover the renewal of our spiritual vigor.
Reflection Questions
1. How do you perceive repentance, and is joy a common element in that perception?
2. How can the joy of the Lord provide strength and resilience in the face of life's challenges?
Prayer
Gracious God, we come before You with hearts open to repentance and transformation. May the joy of the Lord be our strength as we turn towards You. Grant us the grace to find joy in repentance, knowing it leads to a deeper connection with You. Amen.
Action Steps
› Take time to reflect personally, identifying areas needing repentance and growth.
› Write a letter to God expressing
