Hello, My name is L.J. Green. If you really must know that stands for Lillian Jade Green. I am a newly penned author recounting the tales of my late, great aunt and cousin who were quite the black sheep of the family I must tell you. I had just graduated from high school when our nation was fully involved in some horrific and trying times. With nothing better to do I went to clean out our attic and I found some old diaries. They were tucked away in an old steamer trunk that my mother had inherited from her mother. My own mother was never interested in the contents as they looked to be well-preserved and undisturbed for quite a number of years. I truly enjoyed reading them during that long, hot summer when we had very little money for frills of any kind and no prospects for that changing any time in the future. Having enjoyed them I thought I would turn them into a fiction series for you to enjoy as well. The adventures that follow are almost entirely recounted as written with just a flourish or two of my own. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I have in reading and recounting them.

A Widow's Dilemma in Cuba - LJ Green
CHAPTER ONE
Introduction - Train Ride to Florida
They survived their encounter with an assassin, now it was time to take a vacation. Janie and Diane were sitting in the dining parlor of a great steam locomotive drinking tea while reading their material of choice. Diane was reading the latest Sherlock Holmes novel by Arthur Conan Doyle and Janie was reading the newspaper from Washington that was in the dining car when they arrived. Diane smiled to herself when she read the headline, President Roosevelt Barely Escapes Attempt on Life
with the credit for the save being given to his Secret Service team. Huffing at the true inaccuracies that are often printed in the news these days, Janie thumped the paper down on the chair next to her.
Looking up from her book Diane cocked her brow at her niece. Trouble, dear?
No,
grumbled Janie, Just the usual pish-posh about men always coming to the rescue.
Well dear,
she began, clearing her throat when she noticed the look on her niece’s face, and instead took another sip of her tea.
Yes, I know the President really could not acknowledge that we were the actual rescuers who foiled the culprits.
Taking a sip of her own tepid tea. She quirked up her lips and looked at it askew. Janie looked around for the porter. She lifted her hand and pointed to her tea pot on the table.
The ever so attentive porter acknowledged her request with a nod and came over to change out her empty pot for a freshly brewed one he had just finished preparing.
After he left, Janie continued, I do know all that, it just gets my goat.
Heaving a heavy sigh as she poured a new cup of tea for herself and added some to her aunt's cup as well.
Looking over at her niece Diane noticed that she was slumping in her posture so she looked smaller than her normal 5-foot 8-inch frame, and she had lost more weight than she could ill-afford. Her lovely high cheeks were a little shallow and her dark brown eyes looked even darker with the smudges underneath them that her makeup did not seem to be able to hide. Her light brown hair was hidden underneath her black suede hat that sat at a rakish angle on her head as she had been shaking it rather strongly at the paragraphs she had been reading in the paper.
The past assignment had almost killed them both. She was glad they were getting away for a while to someplace warm with soft ocean breezes and lovely fruit drinks. Her own well-rounded frame was looking a little shrunken as well. Her hazel eyes were a darker shade of green today as she was wearing a lovely dark brown and emerald, green dress. Her hair was styled nicely and hidden under her dark green felt hat. She had been keeping it short of late and the hats she adored helped her to have different looks with each new outfit. Looking over at her niece she noticed that she had picked up a different newspaper that the porter had discreetly lain next to her called the Charlotte News. Again, she was mumbling to herself. What's that, dear?
Diane inquired.
According to this headline, some ninny of an Austrian princess, caught her husband in bed with some actress, shot the actress then fainted dead-away. I mean really, why did she not shoot the cheating husband and she should have never fainted.
Disgusted again at the news she was reading she slammed the newspaper down and refused to read any more. Looking over at her aunt as she smiled at her she started to smile herself. Yes, I know I am being grumpy.
She went back to sipping her tea and nibbling on some of the cookies and fruit on the table.
Feeling encouraged that her niece was finally eating something she relaxed into the chair after grabbing a couple of cookies for herself. So, where are we going anyway?
Did I not tell you?
Janie asked looking perplexed.
No, dear you said you would take care of the arrangements and I should take care of making sure all of our winter clothes got shipped back home.
Yes, well, this Henry Flagler person now has a railway line going all the way down to the Florida Keys and then there is a train-boat from there going over to Cuba.
Dropping her cup into the saucer with a bang, Diane crinkled up her face, as a hard hit of sorrow slammed her in the mid-section. Looking at her niece with sadness dulling her vision she trembled from head to toe. What do you mean we are going to Cuba?
she whispered hoarsely.
Sliding her hand around her aunts, she gave her a gentle squeeze of sympathy and encouragement, Auntie, it is time you get a chance to say goodbye to your Will. I found someone who served with him during that time. He happens to be assigned at Guantanamo for a couple of months. His name is Lieutenant Colonel Rodgers. He is some kind of marine officer. The Secret Service captain got the information for me so that we could arrange to talk to him. Maybe he could shed some light on why Will was on that ship in the first place. We know he was not assigned.
Looking at her aunt pleading for her to understand. She squeezed her hand once more and sat back in her chair to wait while her aunt absorbed the news.
I think I need to go lie down in our sleeper car for a little while, alone,
she croaked. Diane quickly got up and rushed down the swaying hallway
