    Xia Zehn moved the brush across the paper with care and precision. The resulting calligraphic smudges sometimes resembled the silhouette of a flirtatious woman dancing with lithe figures and sometimes the silhouette of a dragon soaring in the sky.

    Guo Ming listened to Zehn's explanation while smoking his pipe. Ming was as skilled with plants as Zehn was with calligraphy. He had brought the root dyes that had been ordered and they were chatting over tea prepared by Tian, Zehn's assistant.

    Zehn slowly rose from his seat and took the completed manuscript from the table and handed it to Tian. Tian took a step away and held the paper so that Zehn could see it. Without saying anything, Zehn gestured for him to move further back. After moving a little further back, Tian stopped again and held up the paper.

    Zehn said, Hmmm... and then quickly took the paper from Tian's hand, tore it up and threw it into the fireplace in the center of the room.

    Ming was looking at Zehn with a puzzled expression. Noticing his gaze, Zehn said;

    "The paper absorbs too much ink and disperses. A good artist, good ink and good paper... Can it rain without clouds, dear Ming? Even for this paper I don't like, I worked for days, mixing old fishing
