The Couple Next Door - Earl Valentine
BEGINNINGS
I received the call in August that my father had passed away. August is a horrible time to visit Florida, but I had to take care of all the probate and legal stuff. There were lawyers and forms and bureaucracy, but at the end of it I was in possession of the family home and a small sum of money. I thought I would never live in Florida again, but the house was free and clear, the only expense would be maintenance, insurance and taxes, and I hadn’t been making much with my freelance editing that summer, so I decided to stay. At least for a while. I told myself I would fix up the house and sell it.
My father and I hadn’t spoken in years. It started as his choice, but eventually I gave up trying to repair our relationship and let him go. He was a religious man and did not like having a trans son. My mother passed away when I was in high school. I graduated and went to college in Illinois at age 17 to get away from him.
The house needed so much work. I had given most of the old furniture to a charity and started on the inside of the house. The outside would have to wait until winter.
I was painting my old bedroom. It had a corner window with views of both the bay behind the house and the neighbor’s back yard.
Our house had been the only one in this cove when I lived here. My dad told me the surrounding land was all wetlands and couldn’t be built on. He was wrong or he lied, because someone bought the land next door and built a house.
I’d had a few brief conversations with Carla, the woman next door. Her husband, Luis, traveled a lot. I had not yet met him.
Carla was a few years older than me, blonde, short, and curvaceous. She wore blouses that showed off her breasts, and shorts that hugged her hips. She flirted with me when we talked but I pretended not to notice. I was attracted to her, but she was married. It seemed wrong.
I was working on the trim around the window when I saw him step out the back door and onto their deck. Luis. Or so I assumed.
He was wearing a small, tight bathing suit and nothing else. My eyes were drawn to it. The rest of him wasn’t bad either. Not muscular, but fit, with a dark tan and salt and pepper hair. His chest was smooth and I wondered if he shaved.
I watched as he walked over to their hot tub and turned on the
