About this ebook

I am Lupe Kuharsky and was married to my better-half, Bob Kuharsky, for 52 years, 2 months and 25 days when the Lord called him home. I have a son, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, and two amazing grandchildren. I also have three sisters, two brothers-in-law, a niece, and two nephews. My extended family consists of uncles, aunts, and cousins living in the United States and some in Mexico.

I was born in Mexico, but raised and lived in Texas. After getting married, I moved to Long Island, New York. My husband and I lived there for 4½ years and we returned to Texas and never regretted leaving New York.

After leaving New York, we lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, and then in Mesquite, Texas; where I was employed by Mesquite Independent School district. Now I live in Wylie, Texas and I am a retired educator. After retirement, I wrote my first book and published it December 2015. The book is titled Inspiring Migrant Memoirs, which is a true Migrant story honoring my parents.

Lupe Kuharsky

I married a New Yorker and have been married for 45 years. When we got married, we moved to Long Island, New York and after four and a half years, we decided Texas was where we belonged. We returned to Texas in November 1974 and lived in Corpus Christi, Texas until 1986. We moved to the Dallas/Ft.Worth area and have been living here for 29 years. I have a son, a daughter, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, a marvelous grandson and an amazing granddaughter. I also have three sisters, two brothers-in-law, two nephews, and one niece. I am a certified Bilingual/ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher with a Master's Degree in Spanish Literature and a Mid-Level Management Certification. I worked in a school district as a Monolingual, Bilingual and ESL Teacher. After I left the classroom, I managed the Bilingual ESL Enrollment Services Center and also held the position as the District's Migrant Facilitator. As a facilitator, I worked advocating services for our Migrant Families and students. I am now retired and enjoying my family. This is my first book but hopefully not my last.

    About the Author

    Foreword

This book is about two people who were in love and very devoted to each other. It is very personal and true. This is a descriptive narrative of events taking place over the last 54 years (1969 – 2023). A love story, that never ends, began on Tuesday, February 25, 1969. This date was - and will always be - an unforgettable day. Why is it unforgettable??? Because it turned out to be the beginning of the rest of my life. My approach to life changed. I transformed from a shy, timid, and quiet person into the assertive, ‘speaking-my-mind’ person I am today.

When we started dating, I was extremely quiet and shy. Bob would say, Talk to me; say something. After we were married, he couldn’t shut me up. I would tell Bob, Careful what you wish for. You wanted me to talk. 39471.jpg Our life was not perfect but it sure was happy and filled with lots of love, understanding, consideration, respect, and trust. These five factors, in my opinion, are necessary to build and maintain a happy life together. Before we were married, we had many silly arguments but, after our marriage, the arguments were very few. While reading this book, you may laugh and you may cry but I believe you will enjoy it.

    Dedication

I dedicate this book to Bob Kuharsky, my better-half, for loving me unconditionally and always being there for me. All of these stories are written to remember and to honor the person who was my companion, my lover, my trusted friend, and my husband. Bob was the best because no matter the situation or dilemma, I could always count on him. He was so proud of all of us, and always put his family first.

I also dedicate this book to my children, George and Kim, who are ready to step in and help me move forward.

    Our First Meeting

Let me start at the beginning…

I n August 1968, my sister Anna and I, after graduating from Carrizo Springs High School, Carrizo Springs, Texas, moved to San Antonio, Texas. We enrolled in a one-year Community College. Our parents helped us find an apartment near the college. It was a two-story apartment house on S. Alamo Street near St. Mary’s Street; close to the College. It was our first time to live alone, away from our parents and our two other sisters (Elsa and Helen). It was an exciting and frightening chapter in our lives. We were excited about the new changes in our lives and afraid of the unknown challenges and obstacles coming up. We knew things were going to be different than what we were used to but we were both anxious to meet our new future.

We were very committed to our studies and always stayed close to our apartment, not venturing out. We were well aware of the sacrifice and burden this was causing our parents and we appreciated this opportunity offered to us by them. Every other weekend we would travel by Greyhound Bus back home to visit our parents and sisters. The first semester went by with no issues and no problems until, just before leaving for the winter holiday,
