    [..]

Safir looked up and saw a fire-breathing dragon moving through the air. Flames, which in an extremely spectacular way - melting and evaporating the surface of the ice on their way - were heading towards her. The sight was as beautiful as it was terrifying.

Safir snapped out of her sleep, her heart pounding wildly.

O Mother Almighty! Why do I have to have such nightmares!? she raised a prayerful complaint to the Creator.

For a moment she tried to remember what was the continuation of the epos she had dreamed. But she couldn't attribute the words to anything in her memory. Apparently, her dreaming mind got creative creating the beginning of some new novel and then the dragon attacking her.

Maybe my Mothers told me too many fairy tales. - she thought aloud.

She was out of breath, and it was hot inside the ger. This meant that she was again asleep almost until noon, and the heat pouring from the sky beat the chill of the icy ground. She stretched like a seal, threw off the hides that covered her, dragged her bare feet, and stepped outside the tent.

A pleasantly chilling sea breeze brushed against her naked body. She looked around. Her Mother and aunt were resting in hammocks in the shade of the canopy and playing a game of chess. She walked over to them and with a trained eye, quickly assessed the situation.

    - Hetman's two more moves and the Queen will have nowhere to move, she interfered.

Aunt Taa and Mother Taa looked at her indignantly.

    - You don't have to tell me how my aunt can checkmate me! Mother Taa scolded her good-naturedly.

    - It's gonna be a stalemate, Mom Taa, she laughed. - The Queen will have nowhere to move, but she will not be under capture. You can still have a draw!

    - Oh shit! - Her aunt waved her away, pointing behind her at the same time. "Go get dressed because KaTuu is about to lose a finger!

Safir turned back and saw KaTuu, a squat, middle-aged man, looking at her in an obviously lascivious way. He lost touch with reality and had just burned his finger under the converging lens. You could already see the smoke of the skin when he finally felt the pain and removing his hand from the pot he hissed irritated at himself. He immediately put his hand in a mound of snow.

KaTuu was one of the few men who had the right to enter the areas reserved exclusively for women. Their task was to serve women, and care for their bodies, perform massages and beauty treatments, thanks to which they were privy to female intimacy. Therefore Safir, completely unfettered by her nakedness, approached him and looked into the cauldron.

    - What are you cooking in there?

    - Hello wench Safir! Today it will be a delicious walrus stew! You will lick your fingers, he added looking at her suggestively.

Safir stuck her tongue out at him and turned away. Returning inside the ger, with a charming, slightly balancing step, she bit back at him:

    - Not a seal's treat!

The women watching the situation laughed.

    - Your Safir is trenchant, just a very thin one, and yet the time of her Initiation has come. Still don't want to know the charms of adulthood? Aunt Taa asked.

    - You’re double right, Aunt Taa, Mother Taa replied. – More than one hundred and eighty moons have passed since she was born. And the truth is that you need to Nourish your body. But how to do it when instead of relaxing and smelling wonderful, she prefers to hang around with boys!? I think she likes it too much for now and doesn't want to deprive herself of this entertainment.

    Aunt Taa nodded understandingly:

    - Nothing by force, nothing by force... Although such masculine activities do not suit ladies, even when they are girls. But let's give her time - the Almighty Mother has already made sure that the call of femininity was stronger than such friendships with boys. Soon, she herself would overwhelmingly desire the Great Delight.

    The women laughed again.

Meanwhile, Safir slipped into her other skin, shuddering only at its damp chill, and then ran out of the yurt and walked briskly behind the windbreak. Then she descended just as vigorously down to the waterline, down the stairs carved in the ice.

The boys, four of her peers, sat on a platform - a pontoon made of bones, tendons and cetacean skins, firmly attached to the ice, and framed their hunt today. The red of the flowing blood stood out strongly against the bluish- white of the ice.

Safir smiled a welcoming smile at them showing a row of even white teeth, and they reciprocated with their own welcoming smiles.       She had enjoyed staying with them, especially since the last several Moons. It was then that another clan's boat landed on theirs and in exchange for resources it left one of the boys - MaTii. He immediately caught her eye, although the Mark was burned on his cheek and as a decent girl she should have kept her distance from him because who has heard of a lady liking someone who killed his mother when he was born?

    Yet

Safir liked him immediately, and later joint activities showed that MaTii was a wonderful, and an extremely bright companion. In addition, he was gifted with an intelligent and inquisitive mind, growing up on his own. It was a difficult find for her because it was a male, not a female! Safir didn't know any other man who could read freely, let alone count to more than a hundred.

And MaTii could! He learned letters and the art of reading from her, although she did not consciously teach him to do so, and only accidentally read aloud with him. He remembered the appearance of the letters himself, and so it went on - at lightning speed. Asking him to question her, she passed on to him all her knowledge, everything she had learned. She would have liked to even teach him to play chess, but she was afraid the women would notice it, and it would turn into such a nasty affair that they would dismiss him immediately. The fact that he knows as much as girls his age, that his skills of reading and calculation was so advanced, had to be kept in strict confidence.

Safir sat on the edge of the platform, dropped her legs into the water and, bending down, scooped up the water in her hand and splashed it on her outfit to cool it.

    - It's already warm, she concluded.

    - Yes, we crossed the current line yesterday, MaTii confirmed. There have even been signals that men have started getting ready for the Great Delight."

    - Only eight more moons and we'll be able to participate, too, LuTuu noted.

    - Finally, I will see women's … ! HeTu was ....

    The boys laughed lustily.

    - Oh yes! LuTuu gave him a high-five.

Safir looked at them in surprise. Even though she was with them every day, they surprised her with strange talk more and more often.

    - But you can see mine now, she said.

For a moment the boys froze, HeTuu came back to his senses first.

    - Who'd want to!? He shuddered with a little disgust. Who'd be interested in his friend's …. ? He finished by asking a purely rhetorical question.

MaTii sighed and shook his head incredulously: if this HeTuu is on fire, then...

    Safir just shrugged her shoulders.

    - No? So be it, she replied.

However, LuTuu began shyly, then mustered up the the courage to say, I'd like to...

    -Now get up! Safir pouted.

LuTu made a sad face, but Safir had already changed the subject:

    - Going hunting? She asked. The weather is beautiful!

    - We already went when you were sleeping soundly, LuTuu cooled her enthusiasm. I don't feel like rowing again.

    - Not so exciting, Safir said, remembering the strange, tiring dream. I had a nightmare, a dragon wanted to burn me down.

    - Dragons don't exist, MaTii pointed out. They are only found in fairy tales to scare naughty children. They may also appear as a dream to people who want to fly.

    - But people can fly dragons, LuTuu cut in if they become friends with one.

    - It's a myth! Said MaTii firmly. Just like the one about those mountains being full of ores sticking out of the ocean instead of icebergs. Have you seen an ore stay in the water? No way! It sinks as soon as the ice layer to which it is tied up melts.

    - Okay, where did these ores in the ice come from? Safir asked a trick question.

    - Nobody knows, MaTii replied. That's why people make up such myths. There are no mountains of ores because they are too heavy and would sink right away. There are no flying and fire-breathing penguins, because the air is too thin to support any animal, especially with a human on its back. Air is not water.

    - They can use magic! Said LuTu.

    - Yeah, sure... Have you ever seen a flying animal, a talking penguin or magic work somewhere? He turned amused towards Safir.

Safir was a little bit puffed up by the course of the conversation and only shrugged her shoulders:- Anybody willing to swim?

She looked at MaTii with hope. He understood the meaning of the pleading look.

    - I can swim with you, he declared.

Safir smiled triumphantly. She could always count on him. She decided to make it up to him.

They got into the boat - made of the same materials as the dinghy - and sailed away from the iceberg. But this time the girl wasn't thinking about fishing, but about swimming in the warm sea. After all, there were so many moons waiting for that! MaTii rowed rhythmically, and she admired his already formed musculature, and lazily pondered over the nature of things, admiring the beauty of the world. Their icy mountain looked magnificent and majestic. Various shades of white, gradually turning into blue, waved wonderfully in the full sun, sometimes bringing out the colors of a full rainbow. The colors were complemented by the yellow, red and brown of the ore deposits, breaking through the ice at a certain height. It was like a colorful scar, though very precious and desirable. Safir thought for a moment. Almighty Mother had really given them everything, they needed to live, in abundance! Upstairs, the life-giving Sun, the time-measuring Moon and the stars to navigate, underneath an unfathomable sea full of elements dissolved in it,
