Vice Grip: Understanding and Overcoming Addiction
()
About this ebook
Break Free From Addiction, Starting Now!
There are three things required for an addiction to take a hold of your life:
- Motivation;
- Means and
- Opportunity
In some cases, recovery involves being deprived of the means and opportunity to indulge your vices by checking into rehab. In others, you become a part of a community where you shift your motives in the hopes that you will self-regulate when the means and opportunity pop up.
Vice Grip addresses all three and more, giving practical advice on how you can break free and, most importantly, stay free - no matter the addiction.

Why I Wrote This Book
I used to think that calling an addiction a disease was a cop-out, used by the weak-willed to excuse their lack of discipline. That was until, in a stunning twist of irony, I got caught up in porn addiction for over 10 years. During that time, I believed that if I developed an iron will, soldiered on in prayer and became accountable to someone, I would be free, but, I was wrong.
In the end, all it took was taking the time to understand my addiction and what feeds it. Addiction is a disease because it is a neurochemical phenomenon that can alter the structure and function of the brain, so willpower alone doesn't cut it. Throw in the guilt and shame that comes with falling off the wagon, along with the temporary dopamine high from another dose, and you have a vicious cycle on your hands.
I realized that aside from my motivations (a temporary high to mask loneliness), there were two things required in order for the addiction to thrive: access(means) and privacy (opportunity). I could have one or the other, but I can’t have both. Given how cheap and easily available the internet is, access was unavoidable. But what I could control was the privacy I had to indulge my addiction.
So, I altered my behavior. I stopped taking my phone to the bathroom. I only used headphones if I’m in a room with other people and installed multiple browser extensions that bought me enough time to rethink my next search phrase. Sometimes, I had to take drastic measures, like leaving my headphones and power adapter at home on purpose.
I still occasionally fell off, but I learned to look at it as a learning opportunity and adjusted my
