INTRODUCTION
The Rubik‟s cube was invented by a Hungarian, Erno Rubik in 1974. Now, itislovedbymillionsofpeople worldwide. Startinginthe1980‟sit grewquicklyinpopularity.
Although more than 350,000,000 Rubik‟s Cubes have been sold since itsinvention, only one percent of the world‟s population can solve the Rubik‟s cube. Still, due to Rubik‟s Cube popularity, a huge number of individuals seek to solve the game.
In the 1980‟s, there weren‟t as many opportunities to learn to solve the cube as there are today. There were very few books that taught how tosolve the cube and there wasn‟t any internet access.
However today there are a lot of books on this subject and the internet is alsoeasilyaccessiblewherewebsitesandYouTubevideoscanbefound onthis subject.
Over the years, many new Rubik‟s cube solving methods have beenintroduced. I recommend „TheLongLayer‟ methodfor beginners, but onceyou are able to solve the Rubik‟s cube easily, you will naturally desire tosolve it faster. In order to achieve this, you will need to learn a muchfaster solving method.
A more advanced solving method solves the cube in significantly fewermoves. This will obviously lead to faster solving times. These moreadvanced solving methods are more complicated to learn than thebeginner‟smethod.
You may be talented enough to eventually produce solutions in under aminute. Individuals who can produce extremely fast solutions of the cubeare referred to as „Speedcubers‟.
I would classify a speedcuber as anyone who can produce consistentcube solutions within 30 seconds. Opinionsvary on thisparticular issueas some people classify people as speedcubers
based on moreinclusive terms.
Manyspeedcubers oftengo on to take part inmajorRubik‟s cube speedcubing competitions that are held all over the world. In 1982, Minh ThaibecamethefirstRubik‟sCubeWorldchampion.
He set the record in a short time of 22.95 seconds. Today, the world record stands at a staggering time of 3.47 seconds by Yusheng Du. Themain reasons for such a fast world record today is because the solvingmethods involve minimum moves to be carried out by finger pusheswhich are a lot faster than hand turns.
There are about 30 individuals who have broken the speedcubing worldrecord.Theyhavebecomegreatspeedcubingpersonalities.Youcanfind alotofinformationonthewebaboutthesechampions.Todaytherearea lot of Rubik‟s cube forums on the web where you could take part indiscussions, ask questions and get advice. In this book I am going toteach the „Long Layer‟ method which is the easiest method for beginners. My tutorial also teaches you move notation and how the cube is made up.This book also covers other Rubik‟s cube related topics, such as thenames and brief descriptions of other learning methods.
It also covers speedcubing and discusses top speedcubers. You can getinformation about major speedcubing competitions and achievements. Ihave also mentioned some speedcubing world records that have beenbroken.
Furthermore, I have also given you the information about top Rubik‟s cube forums and websites that you can visit. I decided to write this book togive Rubik‟s cube lovers insightsinto every Rubik‟s cube related activity.
I have included the most crucial information in these chapters toentertain the readers as much as possible. Read on, enjoy and learn.

DECODING THE CUBE: NOTATION, STRUCTURE, AND GETTING STARTED
CHAPTER 1
The Rubik‟s cube is made of 6 sides; R=Right, L=Left, U=Up, D=Down,F=Face, B=Back. In Rubik‟s cube notation if you read R, this wouldmeantoturntheRightsideaquarterturnclockwise.IfyoureadR‟,
thiswouldmeantoturntheRightsideaquarterturncounter-clockwise. If you read R2, this would mean to turn the Right side in either direction 2quarter turns. If you turned R in any direction 4 quarter turns, you wouldend up in the same position where you started.
If you read D‟, this would mean to turn the Down side a quarter turncounter-clockwise. If you read U, this would mean to turn the Upclockwise a quarter turn.
Basically, any of those letters alone means a quarter turn clockwise, when that letter is followed by an apostrophe („), that turn becomescounter-clockwise, and the letter with a two (2) means two quarter turnsin either direction. Although there are advanced notations that you willcontinue to learn as your expertise grows, these six are sufficient tounderstand the algorithm necessary to follow the tutorials in this book.
The Rubik‟s cube is made up of 3 layers which are the first layer, themiddle layer and the last layer. Each layer can rotate around the axis ofthe cube when you apply a force. Also, there are 3 different types ofpieces that make up a Rubik‟s cube; the corner pieces, the edge piecesand thecenterpieces.
First, there are pieces in all 8
