General Madden studied the commandos seated before him in the briefing room. To his left sat Revenant squad and to his right Phantom squad, who like the Revenants specialised in infiltration missions; be it an extraction, rescue, or demolition operation.

The general cracked his knuckles and interlaced his fingers together as he dispensed with the pleasantries and got down to business. As you know gentlemen, we are at war. The ministry of defence has drafted plans, based on intelligence gathered by operatives in the field, for a covert mission to be undertaken that could deal a devastating blow to the enemy and effectively end the war within the year, he said as he surveyed the room and made eye contact with everyone present.

What the.......? Jet blurted out. How did they figure that one out?

Grim turned his head and glared at the rookie, who pursed his lips and sat back in his seat.

The general cleared his throat. We'll get to that Corporal, but first I must update you on the current situation. As you're all aware we're at war with Brazil. Tensions between the country and the Federation have been building for some time, but the recent embargo they placed on Federation trade goods, and a string of incidents connecting their government to acts of piracy against the Federation, has caused the outbreak of open hostilities with the declaration of war several months ago, General Madden said. The projector in the table buzzed to life and a hologram appeared in the centre of the table, showing a map of Brazil that changed to maintain relevance with the general's words. The war began with the first phase of the invasion of Brazil via Guyana to its north. The government of Guyana was happy to accept the Federation's bribe to let us use their territory as a staging area for the invasion. In a move that took the Brazilians by surprise Federation forces quickly launched an attack that steamrolled through their territory with a quarter of the nation being taken in a matter of weeks, General Madden explained, as the map showed the invading Federation forces sweeping through the country at an impressive speed. But then things slowed to a standstill, as was expected, when the Brazilians managed to launch a successful counterattack to stem the tide of the Federation army, he barked in his gruff voice. We can expect things to remain as they are for some time, as we're encountering strong resistance; and the Brazilians don't possess the ground forces to both keep us at bay and reclaim lost territory.

Luthor, the Lieutenant of Phantom squad, snickered. Ah, that's where we should be; down there with the real action, he said, glancing in Grim's direction, Right?

Grim met his gaze and nodded, keeping his expression impassive. It certainly has its appeal, he replied. Grim liked Luthor. Like himself the rugged soldier lived for war and had the battle scars and decorations to prove it. He'd even lost his right eye to some grenade shrapnel. The cybernetic replacement glowed red with the excitement the prospect of war held for the ageing war dog.

The general inhaled. Yes, well; you're going to get your chance sooner than you thought Lieutenant, he replied. Revenant and Phantom squads will be teaming up for this mission which will take you behind enemy lines and into the heart of their territory. Intelligence reports tell us that a third of the Brazilian fleet is currently in port at Sao Luis, just over a hundred kilometres beyond the front line. Your mission will be to infiltrate the naval base at Sao Luis, download vital naval intel as to the whereabouts, activities and logistics of the entire Brazilian fleet and plant a proton bomb in the facility before you evacuate. The blast will leave the city itself relatively unscathed; but will annihilate the fleet in port there. Enabling us to destroy a significant part of their navy and put an end to their invasion plans, General Madden declared. Through our intelligence network in the region we've uncovered Brazilian plans for a naval invasion of the Federation that supposedly involves half their navy and a substantial number of allies from the Caribbean Confederacy and various other scum. Pirates, smugglers, mercenaries and the like. But with the devastating blow dealt to their navy they would be unable to mount an effective counterattack; and I don't think too many of their allies would be willing to come running to their aid. Thus, with this mission; should you be successful, we destroy a significant part of their fleet, gain invaluable information on the rest of their naval forces, hinder plans for a counter attack on the Federation, and sever any budding alliances they have with rogue nations and elements of the criminal world.

    Someone in Phantom squad whistled.

So, who's handling what aspect of the mission? Cram asked.

Phantom squad will be handing the placement of the proton bomb, while Revenant will be dealing with the collection of intel, the general said. You'll travel to Georgetown in Guyana via a ship transporting ammunition and supplies to the war zone. From there you'll be transported to the front-line in a gunship and will rendezvous with the 501st Division currently fighting there. The terrain along their front is rough and mountainous with many ridges, hills, and a valley where the line of defence is particularly thin. Primarily because the nature of the terrain makes launching an invasion through that section virtually impossible. Mechanised infantry can't navigate their way through, and the dense forest and rocky terrain make moving a large number of troops through the area difficult. It is however the perfect route for a small team to sneak across the border unnoticed, General Madden said. Brigadier General Halford of the 501st will fill you in with more accurate details of the mission depending on the current conditions, but essentially you'll travel from there into enemy territory and will make your way to Sao Luis via the town of Canoopee. From there you'll navigate your way through the city to the base, infiltrate it, conduct the mission, and pull out. Once you're clear of the city detonate the proton bomb to destroy the fleet. It will also distract their forces in the region and allow you relative ease in crossing back into Federation occupied territory. A gunship will be standing by to extract you once you return to the checkpoint at Canoopee, Madden explained. Further information as to the terrain, maps, enemy composition and positions will all be provided as per usual for you to revise at your discretion with your squads, General Madden said, addressing Grim and Luthor.

If a gunship is collecting us from the town on our way out, how come they're not dropping us off? someone from Phantom squad asked.

Doing so would alert the Brazilians that we're up to something; and the gunship crossing enemy lines would make itself a target for their artillery. Which would likely end in its destruction and the deaths of both teams. Hence with the commencement of the operation stealth and secrecy is key to the mission's success. Once you've completed it however, then we'll be able to dispense with the secrecy and pull you out,
