Chapter One – On the Corner of Love Street

The pond at the corner of Love Street and St George’s park, lay just under the furthest branch of the large tree that framed one side of the park gates. The tree was beautiful, of considerable age and exactly that kind of sprawling disposition that makes you want to climb one.

The pond itself was quite small, but not tiny, usually shallow with one deep spot. If it hadn’t been hidden away at Love Street, onto which only believers made it very far, it would since long have been an internet sensation. Especially since this was the heart of London.

Every year, with the very first frost, the pond froze solid, and no matter how warm the November days got, it remained frozen until the heat crept in to stay in spring. Even that was a reasonably new affair, like the digital age – from 1881 to 1991 it had never once thawed before April, or so the stories said. There was actually one exception, but very few people remembered that far back.

Newcomers sometimes thought the ice looked flimsy, but those who used to skate on it never once hesitated, and the ice never failed them.

Across from the pond, in a charming little whitewashed brick building, was the main shop window of the Love Street Detectives. This specific morning, as the frost painted most windows white and the pond glittered in its deeply frozen glory, Anemone Sheerwood could be seen redoing her display. The smaller bow window, as ever, was occupied by her younger twin, though today her head leaned back as if she slept.

As a new customer walked into the store, entering the warmth from the open fireplace, they were met with the usual cheerful greeting from the owner, even from her place in the large window display. Behind the counter, sorting little bags of feathers, was a younger man, though not strictly young, perhaps 34 or 35. He had been a regular for some time, but only recently become Anemone’s boyfriend.

Oliver, as he was called, looked up and smiled as Bluebell suddenly sneezed. Bless you, Blue. You’re not getting a chill over there, are you?

Hmm, Bluebell didn’t open her eyes, but her favourite sound was soft, and almost affectionate. Presumably, it had to do with how happy he made her twin sister.

Hm, the sharper sound came from another source, as Spider had directed the customer towards what they were looking for, almost before they knew it themselves, and turned to him instead. She’s not. There’s a spell for that.

Of course there is, Anemone’s soft voice coincided exactly with the same words, spoken in the pleasant baritone of her boyfriend since three months. The long overdue pair looked at each other and laughed.

Hmm-hmm, Bluebell sounded distinctly amused, but there was still fondness in her smile. She had yet to open her eyes.

Woof! Spider let out a snort, shaking her head, as the hellhound in the guise of a Golden Retriever – whom the sisters had named Naiad – trotted up to put her head against Oliver’s leg. Obligingly, he scratched her ear.

I know, Bluebell mumbled insightfully, turning her head a tiny bit and settling to go back to sleep. She talks like me.

Monosyllabic but still understandable, Oliver smiled and winked at Anemone. Does sound like someone we know.

Equally as expressive, but I do believe the dog has more sounds. Spider chuckled again, settling in her chair and opening her book of the day as Oliver rang up their customer, who had been busy browsing ingredients he had never heard of. As they left, he looked at the store receipt and questioned what on earth
