    Chapter

    One

    Newark,  New Jersey

    2015

She was small,  unimposing,  wore a long black gown with half moons all over it.

He walked into her semi-dark tent wondering why he was even there?

    She seemed inviting.

    He seemed skeptical.

He was the consummate over achiever for a Black man;  smart;  had  a good wife,  an MBA degree from Harvard.  Jeff Townsend seemed to have it all.

He admitted to himself he did have had issues.  With the world at his feet,  and despite his trophies,  he seemed bored.  He wanted more;  he wanted more excitement in his life.

    He thought:  more challenges.

He was just ordinary,  average,  Jeff Townsend.  He worked day-to-day and dutifully at his job as chief accountant at Townsend,  Inc.,  his own firm that handled many accounts from all types of businesses many of them banks.  Jeff knew it was an important job.  While the bank watched over other people's money,  Jeff watched over the banks interest.  Yet his brain was working overtime,  at times wandering from place to place:  thing to thing daydreaming about the things that he thought he would never accomplish  outside his business.  He wondered himself why he wanted these things?  He had no real answer.  He thought:  'he just did.'

And at the end of the day he thought he was just like anyone else:  boring.

    Chapter

    Two

It had been a long boring day at the office.  He thought he could only count so much money until it became monotonous.  He arrived home at about 5:00 o' clock as he usually did.  Jean,  his wife, was a teacher at a local high school.  Jeff had always thought of her as the stern,  disiplined,  'no nonsense'  type and had thought that was one of the reasons he married her.  He thought she kept him 'in line.'  He thought she was always cooking and cleaning despite her responsibilities:  doing things for him.

She met him at the front door.  They gave each other a hug,  as they usually did,  and Jeff dragged himself into the house.  Jean returned to the kitchen where she was preparing dinner.

Jeff went to the kitchen table where he sat and began to take off his shoes.

    My feet ache,  he said.

Maybe you should get larger shoes,  she said.  Hungry?

What's for dinner?  he asked,  as he loosened his bow tie.

Chicken and mashed potatoes,  she said.

Sounds good,  he said,  as he started for the staircase in the living oom,  his shoes and tie in hand.

You don't sound very enthused,  she said.

No,  honey.  Sounds like a great dinner.  I'm just a little tired,  I guess.  Sorry if I sound drab.  Another boring day at the office,  I guess,  he said.

I hope you aren't bored with me?
