Prologue

ADVANCED EARTH, AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE

P lease, Doctor, I pleaded as I gazed onto the shield protecting the body of my husband.

The Doctor shook his head. He sighed and used his right hand to push his salt and pepper hair against his eyes. With sad eyes, he told me, again, for the nth time. He is not here, Rian.

I sobbed once and held. My tears are all dried up. Sharp, they call him. I call him my precious Sharpie, named after a brand of colored pens. He made my life colorful when we first met. He made me complete. But now, lying here, I can see the jagged lines across his face, his arms, his skin. A cloth covered half of his body, but I know, beneath it, I will find more scars, jagged lines sewed by the machine.

My husband exploded to pieces. He saved me when alien invaders tried to invade our airspace and this research lab. We were in one of the colonized moons of Jupiter when invading aliens overpowered us. The war raged on. But my colleagues, family and friends knew I cannot function without Sharp. I thought I was a stronger person. Nothing prepared me when I saw him use his body to stop the enemies from obtaining the sigma machine. I sobbed again and brushed the side of the shield as if I could touch his face.
