GROWING WITH NATURE
Every child is born a naturalist. His eyes are, by nature, open to the glories of the stars, the beauty of the flowers, and the mystery of life
. – R. Search
There was a time when people lived in harmony with nature and in sync with the intricate life cycles of plants, animals, and insects. They eagerly anticipated and celebrated the flowering and fruiting times of important food and medicinal plants, the movement of birds, the timing of animal breeding, the shift of winds, and the moon cycles.
This knowledge was considered sacred, and was preserved through storytelling, songs, dance, and ceremonies. It was a time when the boundary between humankind and the natural world was blissfully blurred... nearly invisible.
From where we stand now, this deep, intimate relationship with nature may seem like an elusive dream, a nostalgic and unattainable notion, maybe even impractical. Still, every so often, a flicker of that ancient connection reawakens within us. We sense it in the peaceful solitude of a long bush walk, or the soothing embrace of the ocean. We find it in the raw, primal pleasure of digging our hands in soil, harvesting food we have grown and tended to with love and dedication. We rediscover a lost sense of delight and playfulness as we marvel at the coming and going of birds in our backyards.
But the most astonishing awakening of all occurs when a child enters our lives. Through their pure eyes, we begin to see nature differently. Everything is infused with awe and wonder, and a sense of possibility.
Listening to the leaves rustling in the breeze becomes a soothing experience. Playing barefoot on the grass invites us to move with awareness. Natural resources such as pine cones, grass, rocks, leaves, rain, spider webs, sticks, seashells, pebbles, and dirt provide endless opportunities for play and imagination.
It is clear that children are innately connected to nature and it is our job as parents and educators to nurture that relationship - not only in the early years, but throughout their lives.
What if nature became more than just a backdrop for recreation, but instead, a wise teacher we invited into our homes? And what if we embarked on this journey of exploration and discovery alongside our children?
If deep inside you there is a longing - to slow down, to choose presence instead of busyness, to walk this Earth wide-eyed and open-hearted - then this book is for you.
No matter who and where you are on this beautiful planet, nature will gently lead you into the precious work of unfolding, healing and grounding you, if you allow it to. And like a pebble dropped into a tranquil lake, it will create ripples in our children’s lives.
ABOUT ME
I grew up in a small coastal town in the south of Italy with my parents, siblings, and a large extended family. When I think of my childhood, I can almost taste the sea. I can feel the familiar tangles in my salt-encrusted hair and the gritty sand forever in my toes, trapped in the plastic sandals my mother forced me to wear for years. The beach and the sea, the cliffs and the rockpools were my playground, and the only place where I could spend hours roaming free, fully immersed in play.
Although we lived in a small apartment, nature was at the core of important rituals and traditions in our family. Each year, we anticipated the bounty of juicy tomatoes, sweet figs and wine grapes and the big gatherings that came with the harvesting and preserving of these treasures. We celebrated midsummer with a midnight swim and welcomed the day with the comforting smell of fresh bread in the kitchen. My grandfathers taught me to understand and protect the land and the sea. From my grandmothers I learnt the ways in which plants can heal us, inside and outside.
Of course, I did not understand any of this while I was young - living carefree and dreaming of big cities and exotic places around the world. It was only when I gazed into the eyes of my first child that everything started to fall into place. I relived my childhood through those eyes and felt like the jigsaw pieces of my life were finally fitting together. A re-awakening and, perhaps, a surrendering - to something that was way bigger than me - began to unfold. Nature became my spiritual home, my gateway to the divine.
When I became a mother, I knew I wanted my children to grow with an understanding that we are all part of this universe, interconnected in this amazing web of life. That trees and plants hold ancient wisdom, that animals are friends with many gifts to share, that the moon and the stars can reveal secrets sometimes too big for us to comprehend.
And so, soon after the arrival of my second child, I found myself on the path of becoming a Forest school leader and in 2019 we created Big Scrub Nature Play.
I say we because it was truly a joint venture - my children were (and still are) the driving force behind it, helping and inspiring me in every way.
Today, thanks to Big Scrub, I have the opportunity to share my love for nature play and nature pedagogy - connecting to hundreds of families through our programs, and supporting schools and homeschooling communities implementing experiential, nature-based curriculums.
Many of the stories, crafts and activities you will find in this book have been created, tried and tested on countless adventures with my own two Wildlings and all the children I am so blessed to spend time with. Whenever I can, I draw on the wisdom of the traditional custodians of this land, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, whose knowledge and connection to land continues to be a source of awe and inspiration for me.
Nature is filled with magic and this book is about finding, and recognising that magic. I hope it will guide you and your child to a place of discovery, connection and wonder.
Find ways to be joyful in nature. Let yourself and your child fall in love with it.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Australia’s vast expanse makes the conventional Western four season calendar, which divides the year into four roughly equal sequential phases (summer, autumn, winter, spring), greatly ineffective for encapsulating our country’s diverse weather and climate. Unlike this conventional approach, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have long possessed a deep understanding of the seasons and their transitions by observing local flora and fauna, weather patterns, fire activity, and even the stars.
In this book, I follow the seasons and rhythms of the eastern coast of Australia, specifically across the regions where I live - Bundjalung Country, the area known today as the Northern Rivers in New South Wales, and Gubbi Gubbi Country, also known as the Sunshine Coast in South East Queensland. It is the result of countless hours immersed in exploration and play across beautiful beaches, lakes, rivers, creeks, mountains and rainforests. Or just sitting in my own garden, watching what is blooming or ready to harvest, and the dance of birds and insects as they go about their day.
Simply put, it is based on my observation of the natural world around me. While you may notice some similarities, the number of seasons, the length of each season, and the changes they bring in nature can greatly differ based on your location. I hope this book will become a source of inspiration for further and deeper observation of the natural world around you.
Within each chapter, you will find ways to invite the wonders of nature into your home and playtime through the following categories:
Earth Magic
Plant and animal allies that will guide us in our explorations
In the Kitchen
Nourishing recipes to create with love and mindful presence
Full Moon
Special activities and celebrations to harness the energy of lunar cycles
Nature Play
Outdoor adventures and crafts that spark imagination and curiosity
Stories and Mindfulness
Inspiring tales and nature-based mindfulness prompts to instil a sense of presence and gratitude
All the activities have been simplified to allow children to actively participate and create alongside you. They can, however, be easily adapted to different ages and abilities, allowing you to explore these themes year after year, and watch your child grow with them.
More than a set of instructions, think of them as prompts to create moments of connection in your home. Let your children be your guides. Allow them to take the lead, and be ready to be amazed.
A DIFFERENT APPROACH
In a world awash with information, children are often inundated with knowledge. Yet, too rarely are they invited to venture outside and given the time to linger, to experience, and to fall in love with the very things they are taught through textbooks, videos, and digital apps.
At the same time, many environmental groups and nature-based programs foster a ‘look, but don’t touch’ mentality. Don’t step off the trails, don’t pick the flowers, don’t touch the worms, don’t climb the trees. In an effort to protect nature, we put it behind glass.
To me, nature connection is a felt experience. It is sight and sound, smell and taste, touch, and elements of mystery, or magic, all coming together. My approach - inspired by nature connection advocates like Rachel Carson and Joseph Cornell, and guided by the ethos of the Forest school movement - advocates for a full sensory immersion and a commitment to a head, hearts and hands model for transformational learning.
In the course of our programs, children are not only allowed but encouraged to revel in Mother Earth’s embrace - to play in and with nature; to build shelters and climb trees; light fires; pick fruits, flowers and seedpods; to gently collect pieces of bark and, safely get up close to animals. We tread this path with respect and compassion, leaving no trace and are conscious that we share that space, that tree, that flower meadow with hundreds, if not thousands of other creatures. With this approach the emphasis is equally inward and outward.
Throughout the pages of this book, I will repeatedly encourage you to venture outside and forage, collect, harvest, and pick. Touch nature, smell
