INTRODUCTION
Are you trying to teach your child to read and don’t know where to start? Or are you maybe a literacy or literacy-to-be teacher who is looking for a framework for teaching reading?
In any case, this guide is here to help you.
But, before we get started, let me ask you a question: Do you think that sight words are the most important tool for teaching a child to read?
If you are a little bit like me in the past, you have probably answered yes to this question. After all, it seems that everyone around us focuses on this, right? (Sight words, by the way, take a multitude of different names: instant words, heart words, snap words… and probably many other names that I have not even heard of!)
However, I am here to tell you that there is a much better way of teaching reading that does not require children to memorize sight words. Furthermore, this way of teaching reading will be less painful for children, way more effective and allows them to achieve their full potential at reading.
Once I switched from focusing on sight words to this new way of teaching reading to my own children, I could see immediate results. This is very personal to me, and I want to share this valuable information with you.
Learning to read doesn’t have to be that arduous, boring task anymore! You don’t need to keep fighting with your children so they memorize these flashcards. If you are a parent, by following the process this guide reveals, you will be setting up the right foundational skills for turning your child into a successful reader. If you are the parent or the carer of a struggling reader, you will understand that it is probably the methods and not your child (or you!) to blame for his/her struggle. If you are a literacy educator… well, I know that you are not always given the right tools, the right training, the right materials for teaching reading. Many (most) schools are still heavily reliant on sight words and outdated methodology.
That is probably why you are here, reading this guide, looking for more information…
You possibly don’t enjoy the normal
way of teaching reading. You probably don’t like the results you see. You probably are a witness to how many children are left behind and not given proper solutions. I know you’ve got your students’ best interests at heart.
Having access to this powerful framework for teaching reading will turn you into a confident and successful educator with the potential to make a HUGE impact on your students’ future. Parents, educators, carers: imagine how happy and proud you will feel about yourself and your students/children!
You may be wondering what the method used in this guide is…
The method is good old phonics… but with a twist!
What is this twist? A strong focus on phonemic awareness, an extremely carefully designed gradual progression of concepts that build of top of each other, the concept of orthographic mapping and a focus on patterns for tackling irregularities.
Let’s go through those one by one.
1. Phonics: Why phonics? In the last few decades, neuroscience has uncovered what happens in the brain when we learn to learn. In short, the following mechanisms need to take place: we need to specialize our brain’s visual system for the shapes of the letters. Then, via the phonology pathway, we connect these shapes to the speech sounds in the language. Can you see why phonics is so powerful?
2. Phonemic awareness: Phonemic awareness is all about training our ears to hear the individual sounds in words and developing the ability to play with the sounds. You will learn more about it throughout this guide, but I want you to understand why it is so important! Again, it goes in line with what neuroscience has to say about what happens in the brain when we learn to read. Remember: our brain learns to read by connecting the strange shapes
(letters) with the speech of sounds.
Besides, phonemic awareness has been found to
