About The Author
The Beginning
It was a windy day outside and its whistle could be heard through the cracks accompanied by an occasional scream of labour fatigue coming from the maternity ward at the old Greys hospital, the old government hospital where Elaine Madison gave birth to her son. The hospital was on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg on the main road to Durban.
Paul was born in the early 1970's and there was joy an excitement at young Paul's entry into the world. He looked kind of bewildered for a moment; a second ago he was in the womb, in comfort and warmth. Now, he was faced with this noisy environment and being handed over to a nurse that put him in a warm blanket and put suction pipes down his throat.
Everybody was happy and he heard the voice of a young nurse saying to his mum. You have a beautiful son Mrs. Madison, perfect and healthy
.
The following days were fuzzy as he tries to familiarize himself with his family. People seemed to be making some strange sounds around him saying, Gugu theresy theresy theresy.
I guess this must be family he thought.
His dad would come in from work and put him on his lap and make those same gugu sounds as he reached out for his dad’s lips.
Paul loved this environment. His older brother Larry and sister Caitlin wanted to carry him, but his mum said it was too early as Paul was a bit too young to be carried by his two siblings.
As a kid growing up, Paul was always fascinated with life. He would constantly peer out through the car window at the huge Jacaranda trees that aligned some of the streets of Pietermaritzburg.
Occasionally the family would visit Durban beaches where Paul and his brother Larry would roll around in the warm sand build castles and run into the sea. Paul and Larry looked out for their sister Caitlin who brought her books to the beach. The boys would try to convince her to come into the waters, but she would not.
Caitlin was adamant in what she wanted and what she chose for fun. She loved their company though and would spend time laughing and telling jokes with the family. Larry was the eldest son and always played the big brother as soon as mum and dad were away on an errand. He loved writing. Caitlin and Paul loved his adventure stories that he made up. They would be complete with suspense and action and the girl was always the brown-haired person. I guess he had a thing for brown-haired people.
He was handsome and well built. James and Larry Madison would spend an hour and a
