Picture a quiet room, the air humming with possibility. There, I sat with naught but a flicker of an idea. A single seed, small and unassuming, nestled within the fertile soil of imagination. The seed sprouted, tendrils of curiosity reaching toward the sky, and thus began a journey that spanned moments both exhilarating and daunting.

No it didn’t happen like this.

Picture this: I’m a bright-eyed sixteen-year-old, miles away from home, bunking in a boarding college. Now, I should’ve been nose-deep in those boring textbooks, but nope, I was neck-deep in R.L. Stine’s terrific tales. Let’s just say my grades felt the consequences of my book addiction later on.

So, here I am, in a chemistry lab, fiddling with some experiment that I probably should’ve been paying attention to, when bam! It hits me like lightning – I want to write my own book. Seriously, I couldn’t wait for that class to be over. The second it was; I was buzzing to my friends about it. And just like that, a whole story starts playing out in my mind, like a movie projector on overdrive.

But here’s the twist: I had absolutely no clue how to start. My brain was a blender of ideas, and the chapters were whizzing by in my mind. So, I went with the flow – wrote a chapter title on each line of a page, 22 chapters in all. Those titles? They were my guiding stars, giving me a rough outline of what the heck I was doing.

And then, the magic began. I started writing, and boy, did it feel like I was on an adventure myself. Characters popped up out of nowhere, and suddenly, they were more real than the people around me. I didn’t even bother with outlines or plans. I just wrote whatever came to me, letting the story take its own course.

But hold on, that’s not the end of it. Somewhere in the middle, a totally different plot barges in, and I’m like, Hey, I’m already halfway through, but this new idea seems more good to be written! It’s like my story had a mind of its own, and I was just along for the ride.

I finished those 22 chapters, and then came the real fun – typing it all up on my computer. Man, that was a task! But as I typed, more ideas hit me. It was like my brain was on overdrive, spitting out stuff faster than I could process. And guess what? This brain explosion changed the whole darn storyline. Crazy, right?

Now, you’re holding in your hands the result of my wild ride which I finally named WHISPERS OF THE NIGHTDREAMS But don’t think it was all smooth sailing. This book went through more transformations than a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Draft after draft, change after change, until I finally hammered out the last version.

So, dear reader, as you flip through these pages, know that you’re not just reading a story. You’re getting a glimpse into my head, my journey, and my growth. From that lightning strike of an idea in a chemistry lab to the final manuscript you’re holding, this book has been through quite the adventure. I hope it resonates with you and gives you a taste of the excitement that went into creating it.

All the characters in this book are fictional. Be wary of the Nightdreams as they may follow you into your slumber.

    AIMEN

    "Nightdreams in broad daylight,

    Shadows lurking at night,

It isn’t dark what scares you,

The scary part is what’s inside,

    These Nightdreams wrap their evil,

Hands upon your soul at night,

They pull you deep within a world,

    Which is full of fright,

    These Nightdreams follow you,

    And haunt you every night,

Even in the day you see them,

You know they can rip you alive."

    nwelcome Surprises

Kate, be quick! Jen will be here shortly, and you have to set the dining table!, Della, who was a woman of around 45 with fair skin and short blonde hair, called out in a loud voice.

From upstairs came a voice, Just a second, Mom. I can’t decide what to wear.

At that moment, a girl of around 20 with black hair and a dark complexion arrived and shouted, Mom, Dad, anyone-- I’m home!

Della, with a towel in her hand, greeted her warmly, Welcome, my dear. It’s such a pleasant surprise to have you here!

Mom, you knew I was coming. How can it be a surprise?, replied Jenifer.

Della smiled, Because you always give surprises! Now, tell me, how are you? How was your journey? Did you face any trouble on the way? Have you…

At this, Jenifer cut her off and said, Take a breath, Mom. I’m alright and everything went great. Most importantly, I’m delighted to be home and to be with all of you.

Hi Jen! a voice called out from the stairwell, It has been a while since I’ve given you a hard time!

They embraced one another. You haven’t changed a bit, Jenifer chuckled.

First, tell me how this shirt looks on me! Kate asked. It’s so popular on Amazon lately. I even got you one, she grinned.

It looks terrific on you, Jenifer smiled and hugged her sister. She glanced around, Where is Dalton? I can’t hear him.

He went to the doctor with your dad, Della answered. Doctor? Jenifer was taken aback.

It’s just a silly kid thing, Kate said.

Kid thing...is Dad alright? Jenifer made a disgusted face. It’s Dalton that’s sick, Kate shouted, you assumed Dad would do the kid thing.

Your brother has been having nightmares and not acting like himself, Della shared.

What kind of nightmares? Jenifer asked.

You know how kids his age are, they stay in their world and start dreaming about things, Della replied.

Jenifer’s mind had wandered off into deep contemplation as if she was aware of something about the nightmares. Jen... Della clasped her hand, you look exhausted; go for a refreshing soak until John and Dalton come back home.

    But I’m distressed... Jenifer wailed.

This is usual with many kids of his age, Della said, and these visions are simply his fantasies. That is all.

You had the same kind of illusions when you were a toddler, Kate joked.

Katy, I’ve just come in. Demonstrate some politeness, Jenifer chuckled.

Kate, set the table and Jenifer, why don’t you go have a nice bath. Della instructed, And don’t worry over him. He will be okay.

Mom, I can’t find the tablecloth, Kate shouted from the kitchen.

Wait a second, I’m coming, Della ran to aid Kate. Jenifer shut the entrance door and went to the living area.

There, she saw the television, couch, and artwork. She then went to the dining room and kitchen, appearing to be content yet something was missing. Everywhere she went, scenes from her past came to mind. Her sight stayed focused on the entrance to the basement, which used to be her dread when she was small. She watched as the door gradually opened and the dark void beyond filled her with terror. She was petrified and could hardly move. All of a sudden, a woman with yellow hair emerged from the doorway, causing Jenifer to let out a shriek as did the woman.

    Who are you? screamed Jenifer.

I believe you are Jenifer and I am Samantha. You can call me Sam. I just came here to put some additional items in the basement since there wasn’t enough room in my house. Samantha had a smile on her face.

Jenifer was lost in her thoughts.

You can come to my place. It’s only a street away, Samantha said as she took hold of Jenifer’s hand.

Jenifer emerged from her thoughts, Yes, sure! You don’t appear to be alright, noted Samantha.

I’m just exhausted. I need to take a nap. I’ll join you later, Jenifer said as she picked up her belongings and went up to her room.

My room! Jenifer exclaimed. She spun around to look at her room, inspected her dressing table, and kissed the mirror. She opened the window to let in some fresh air. I missed you! I missed everything! Jenifer breathed in the fresh air, flopped onto her bed, and hugged her pillow. I should take a bath first, she thought to herself.

Jenifer got up and got out items from her bag to put away her clothes. Suddenly, a small piece of paper fluttered down from her cupboard with the words, Welcome home! scrawled in mysterious handwriting. Her heart started to pound in her chest.

She glanced around the room and opened her bag to draw out a file. Inside, it was filled with several similar notes with the same handwriting yet varied messages. She added the falling note to the file and shut it. She sat down on her bed and sighed, She’s here too. As she started to feel sleepy, Jenifer quickly pulled out some medications from her purse, but before she could consume them, Kate walked in, catching Jenifer attempting to conceal something.

Kate inquired, I came to check in if you needed anything?

I’m alright, thank you, Jenifer replied with a smile. You don’t seem to be, Jen, Kate said as she edged closer and sat down next to her sister. What happened to us? We were so close.

My job has been keeping me busy, so I don’t have much time, Jenifer explained as she clasped Kate’s hands, But now that I’m here, hopefully, we can return to how we were before.

I hope so and I don’t want you to be keeping anything from me.

What? Of course not, you silly, Jenifer laughed.

I don’t know; I’m just getting that feeling. With that, Jenifer rose from the bed and grabbed her towel. I think I’m going to take a bath now.

    Yeah, sure, Kate replied, smiling.

Jenifer headed off to the bathroom, turned on the warm water, and soaked in the refreshing, minty bubbles. Nothing can be more calming! She proclaimed.

Meanwhile, Kate was snooping around in Jenifer’s room looking for something she was attempting to conceal. She found a container of some pills labeled Modafinil. Kate pondered over why Jenifer was hiding the medication from her and what it was used for.

She hastily jotted down the name of the drug on a scrap of paper and then raced back to her room. She grabbed her cell phone and typed Modafinil pills into Google to understand what the pills were intended for. She discovered that the pills were taken to keep someone awake, and she wondered why Jenifer would take them. Could she be enduring some health issues?

Kate, are you on your phone again? We have a lot of work to do, Della stepped in.

Kate rapidly locked her phone and said, Mom...I...I was just checking my homework.

Not a good excuse. Come downstairs and lend me a hand with the laundry, Della instructed then left.

Kate crumpled the bit of paper on which the medication name was written and hurled it on the ground. She kept on ruminating about Jenifer. She had numerous inquiries in her psyche yet how might she pose them? Would Jenifer uncover to her what truly was occurring or would she keep it a mystery?

Meanwhile, Jenifer was in her bathtub yet she couldn’t unwind. She lay there with her eyes open. I should not sleep…I should not sleep… she kept on rehashing the words. Her eyes gradually began to close and she immediately poured water on her face.

She had been conscious for three days straight due to the pills she was taking in excess amounts. I need to increase my dosage now. She sighed. She abruptly felt a presence around her. As though something had moved behind her. She spun around quickly yet there was nobody. She came back to her position. She felt something contact her leg. She screamed and waved her legs. It was simply a shower gel that had slipped into the tub.

Then all of a sudden the lights started to flicker. Her eyes were wide with fright as she gawked at the flickering lights. Her body temperature started to rise. In an instant, the flickering had ceased. It was just a power outage, nothing more, she thought to herself. She stayed in the bathroom for a while, carefully examining the whole area. It was so quiet; she could hear the tap dripping and the ticking of the clock. She stepped out of the tub, tightly twisting the tap to prevent any more water from flowing, thus bringing an end to the noise. She took out the batteries from the
